Bjorn Borg is in a class by himself. His strokes seemed effortless and so loose. His style was so unique and not like today's players who seem to copy each other. It was a pleasure to watch him and I had the privilege of meeting him back in the 1970's. A gentleman on and off the court.
@adrianwilliams5557
@adrianwilliams5557 4 ай бұрын
His strokes were simple and efficient with minimal energy wastage. He was for the most part a counter-puncher, just bringing the ball back all the time. He might be accused of being a bit of a perfectionist. In the early 90s he tried to make a comeback. Mid 1993 he retired after losing to Alexander Volkov in the Kremlin Cup. Considering Volkov was ranked 17 in the world and that Borg had had a match point, I would have thought that amounted to a successful comeback. I wonder if Rafael Nadal could have won a single French Open with a wooden racket?

It was the coolest, the most premium, of the Italian tennis sports fashion brands. Today it is not even the shadow of what this brand was, then there were Sergio Tacchini, Ellesse or Autralian, all of them revived with greater or lesser success. Today it is nothing more than a shadow of what it was. A Fila Bj tracksuit from that time for a child like me at that time was a dream. The rackets where at that time the wood was beginning to give way to graphite and had the leather grip tape and the strings with a very characteristic smell that I still remember today. Those duels with McEnroe and Connors. What times those were! A lot of homesickness.

My all-time favorite 🎾 player…until Roger Federer came along years later, and now I still love them both. It’s funny how anyone would come up to him and remember him as “that Fila guy” rather than the player that won FIVE Wimbledon championships IN A ROW!! 👑 After begging my mom, she checked me out of school so we could drive 3 hours away to see Bjorn play an exhibition match with Roscoe Tanner. I was so excited when the car he was in nearly drove over my foot as I tried to get his autograph. 🤣. (Borg won of course.)

@@bobcolbert1449 Rubbish. Vilas bombed every year at Wimbledon, managed to win the French the one year Borg was not eligible to play, won the Australian a couple of times when only one man and his dog turned up to play Australia in those days and somehow beat Jimmy Connors in the US Open final. He has a massive ego, referring to himself in the 3rd person and is convinced he was cheated out of being world number 1 at some point that none but he and some Argentinian sycophants can remember by the ATP computer. Borg was completely different, he had that very rare quality of being, like Elvis or Alain Delon

someone you could literally not take your eyes off. Vilas never had groupies sleeping outside his hotel bedroom. Borg had hundreds of them, every night. He got tired of the circus and as such, quit.

Loved Borg, but the revelations that came out about him were quite a shock. The worst, to me, was his treatment of Lennart Bergelin, who gave up his life for Borg's career, and was discarded by him later, completely. He also treated his first wife pretty badly too, by all accounts, though she has never criticised him, as far as I know. I think Borg's famous cool demeanour was probably a shield to keep him insulated from the pressures of the tennis circuit, and when he retired and got bored, he let go his discipline and inhibitions, and ran wild for a few years.
