Forgot to add to previous post, First the Biggest Ponderosa or Fir I have cut to date here is a couple of old growth bug killed Ponderosa's that were 6' 8" at the widest point on the stump and they both were as solid as could be. On occasion I will have to drop or push some rotted standing timber that you can't understand while they are still up right but I have never seen anything as rotted as some of the trees you have to deal with with the exception of my Dad cut down some Redwoods back in the day on the West Coast when we lived in Northern California. Your really good at reading the trees you fell thats for sure. I use the new Jonsereds Pro saws here (made by Husquvarna now ) my main saw is the 2253 its 50cc and is identical to the same cc Husky saw except price is quite a bit less, parts fully interchange between this saw and the 550xp and I get the full wrap handle and 24" bar and my big cc saw is still a Husquvarna 390xp and I have several bar and chain combos for that beast. I'm glad Husquvarna bought out jonsereds pro saws (don't have a clue abput consumer saws lol) because anytime i can get that quality and dependability at a better price hey I am all about that. Thanks Again for all you do and how you show how and why you fell each tree....sure teaches me new stuff and jogs my memory about methods I might not get to use every day here. Keep up the good work and be safe.

@@BjarneButler I hear that. I know how the hee-bee-jee-bees get to me when I am knocking one thats even a 1/4 that size. I find myself hearing creaks and groans that aren't there.....hearing a snap or pop from the outer trunk thats not there....one thing is for certain it really keeps you on your toes and the little Woo-Woo hairs on the back of your neck working overtime. The Son and I are currently working in a big area of storm blow down and bark Beatle killed Ponderosa Pine and man its just chock full of widow makers, so our Son is running the tractor and winch and being my extra set of eyes and ears....this is a good winter time job and we have no firm deadline to be done as long as its this year so we are being extra careful. I showed our son a bunch of your videos over this past weekend and you have no idea how helpful they were to us both....he learned some new stuff and I got my memory jogged about some other ways to fell bad wood safely. @@BjarneButler Yes we do. We found it much safer for piece of mind to have constant radio communication between both my self and our Son and we very seldom are out of cell phone range of the Wife. She brings us out our lunch every day most days anyhow that plus I took the Fellers test as did our Son and we ALWAYS err on the side of caution...we can most in most cases if its a really bad tree notch it, hook on with the cable winch and pull it down safely if need be. My wife is constantly going over the internet looking for new safety videos for us to watch once a month so we do our best to stay up to date and pro active....we have the advantage of being able if the tree is too risky.....of just walking away too. One advantage of cutting smaller diameter trees that are no where near human traffic is notch it and let mother nature do her thing....but I hate to do that and will only as a last option. Its nice having our little Ford/New Holland 4×4 Forestry Tractor to do 90% of our work with, With its winch, and front mounted log grappler is just the ticket for us....we leave a very small environmental footprint and can do everything with the one tractor that we need from clearing roads to skidding logs, stacking and loading them on our own truck & trailer to haul in to the mill. Were very small but have all the work we can handle because the type jobs we do....thinning and clearing bug killed is what we do 95% of the time for the USFS but we also thin private and USFS ground as well. There is a HUGE DEMAND for the Bark Beatle killed Ponderosa Pine for home building with its multitude of colors once its killed by them and dried down and there is no shortage of standing bug kill to be logged unfortunately....our Daughter is in Forestry College and already has a job waiting here for her when she graduates.

@BjarneButler6 жыл бұрын
A lot of factors. Lean and size, Is there rot that could compromise the hinge wood? if so, where is the rot located. Then factor in where you want the tree to land so as to create as little damage as possible. Don’t forget to factor in wind, snow load and safety. Do you have a safe spot to escape to incase shit hits the fan? Also limb weight and school marms can also determine where to put hinge wood.
