My no-gi clothes used to still smell bad *even after running them through the washer and dryer*. But a training partner told me the secret to fixing this. The night before washing, soak your clothes in hot water (just enough to cover the clothes in a bucket) and a tbsp of oxi-clean. The next day, drain your clothes and then run them through the washer and dryer. All the smells disappear right after.

At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, I'd like to further explain what to do, why, and where many people are slightly off in their process. Obviously it works well enough for them, but you don't necessarily have to go through that much effort unless you really want to. Synthetic fibers (polyester, spandex, rayon, etc) are typically woven into a very, very tight weave that is difficult for water to pass through. The synthetic fibers also do not absorb water nearly as quickly. So the trick is to let them soak in water for an amount of time necessary to get it completely soaked through. Then, and only then, do you put them through a wash cycle with soap. Now, if you were to submerge the material in water for 30 seconds you would think it is completely and thoroughly soaked. Unfortunately this isn't the case. If you let it sit for 5-30 minutes, then it will be thoroughly soaked, through and through. NOW the soap/detergent mixed into the water can more easily pass through the woven fibers allowing the soap to attach to the oils, dirt, minerals (from sweat) and so on. Then, since the water can flow freely, the soap can be washed out, fully removing the unwanted "substances". Practically speaking, how can you do this? If you have a faucet built into your washer, great! Turn it on and get each individual piece wet. If not, then you can soak them in a bucket, tub, or just do a quick rinse cycle. After that I recommend a wash cycle with the coldest water you can get (reduce wear on the fabric), with a pre-soak setting or a delay setting. Essentially, you are getting them wet again to start the full wash cycle. The delay setting should be set to whatever makes sense for your situation. Don't turn it on at 9pm to have it finish at 11pm sitting there for the next 6-10 hours getting mildewy. If you have a "deep fill" setting USE IT! If you don't, then make sure you have plenty of wet stuff in there. Extra weight (wet clothes) sort of "tricks" the system into thinking that more water is needed since there is a large load. Extra rinses at the end of the wash cycle is also really helpful to get rid of soap that will later soak up sweat and stick to the fabric. I hope this helps! It's not magic!

If anyone has any questions for their particular case, I am quite happy to help! Other ideas - when you get home, immediately hang up your gi so it can dry out. Wet clothes in a bag get mildewy. Sweaty clothes in a bag are on a totally different level of disgusting. Don't leave a sweaty gi in your bag overnight. You can still get it clean, but dang it smells bad until you do. Also, if you want to go shirtless under your gi, that's your choice. But laundering it is a LOT easier if you wear a layer underneath to absorb most of your sweat.
@adamthatguy4542 ай бұрын
I put oxy clean and Lysol laundry sanitizer in a bucket and fill with water. Soak overnight and run through the washer. Hang dry. If you can hang outside to dry, even better. This was the key to destinking my rash guards. Showering as close to class time as possible is also key. Or at least run some dude wipes ove the pits and nether regions.

Good call. We're all capable of smelling, just some more than others. I'm one of those that sweat a LOT and now that I'm living this healthy physical life, I'm eating way better than ever which means lots of vegetables and lower fat that don't always taste super delicious, so I add spices like garlic, onion, turmeric and tobacco to stay happy eating, BUT I'm always worried about my breathe and maybe it even comes out in my sweat? Anyways, I clean my gi immediately as soon as I get home with detergent, fabric softener (really just to smell good because I don't care if it's silky soft lol) and I even keep antibacterial detergent in case my gi gets the funk which it doesn't IF I dry it thoroughly. It's the thick collar. You think it's dry because everything else is dry and the gis cost a lot so you wouldn't think to dry it extra, but it sure makes a difference getting the last bit of moisture out from deep down. I also swim in my pool or soak in the hot tub before class so I'm guaranteed oil free at least starting class. Department, I buy it in 3 or 4 packs lol but seriously! And I keep breath mints with me always. I even use mouthwash in the car right before I go into class. One day someone asked me if I had been drinking because they smelled the alcohol. Nope! I just suck at Jiu-jitsu, but at least my breath is fresh lol Unless I wrap myself in Saran wrap, this is as good as it gets LOL Slap bump, let's go!

I know not everyone can afford it, but I was also self conscious of my breath too so I'd use breath mints before every training session. 😅 Also slippers is important for bathroom feet, because people miss the toilet and don't want to bring that back onto the mat. I've spoken to people about bathroom feet before and I gotten the response, "oh I don't mind, it doesn't bother me" 🤣

This needs to be shouted from the house tops. Just yesterday I had some dude's gooch shoved right into my face and I was so thankful that this guy was clean. Please do a more extensive hygiene video. I don't think you've done one recently. Please tell people to bring multiple rash guards/gis if they are doing multiple classes. At least change your top since that's what gets soaked mainly. And it's almost certainly the part getting rubbed on your new training partner's face. He's fresh and clean while you are disgusting after training for an hour. Bring a second top.
