Really well done video! Thanks man! I like what you said toward the end "It's not like I have a bunch of D'arce choke escapes memorized- I'm just fighting the grips" One principle internalized is worth more than any number of individual techniques.

Jordan, In less than 24 hours I have put this video to practice, and it has made a night and day difference in my game. Dominant position starts and ends with grips. 1) JIU-JITSU IS A GRIP BATTLE. Once you understand this, Jiu-Jitsu becomes so much easier. 2) Use grips to do things to your opponent while simultaneously preventing your opponent from doing things to you. 3) Grips aren’t just your hands, their also your legs (and your feet). 4) CONSEQUENCES OF NOT HAVING GRIPS: Without grips, YOU LACK CONTROL; without control, you’re vulnerable to attack. 5) You don’t need to strip grips that don’t stop you from doing what you want to do. 6) You need to FIGHT TO TAKE DOMINANT GRIPS and to not allow your opponent to take dominant grips on you. DOMINANT GRIPS ARE GRIPS THAT ACTUALLY CONTROL. Not all grips are equal. 7) When you PULL GUARD, or any time you are IN GUARD, you need to have GRIPS WITH YOUR FEET RIGHT AWAY or you’ll get your guard passed (always strive for three or four points of contact at all times). 8) EVERY GRIP NEEDS TO HAVE A PURPOSE. When rolling, think to yourself, “Does this grip have a purpose?” Are your grip(s) preventing your opponent from turning away (escaping), or posting to prevent a sweep? 9) When you’re rolling and things don’t go your way, think about what grips you had initially before it all went bad for you. 10) When to break grips: When a grip PREVENTS YOU FROM DOING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, you need to break it. YOU ARE BEING CONTROLLED. 11) In most cases in the gi, you need to break collar grips. A collar grip more often than not prevents you from doing what you want to do. 12) Every grip requires a different approach (to break it); pry, circle, kick, peel, angle adjustment, or force a reaction. 13) The most common way to BREAK GRIPS IS WITH TWO HANDS (two on one is stronger). Practice prying grips off in a way to allows you to still have CONTROL WITH YOUR LEGS WHILE KEEPING YOUR BUTT (HIPS) DOWN. Have you hips up, opens you up to being swept. 14) We can also CIRCLE WHATEVER PART OF OUR BODY IS BEING GRIPPED to either break the grip off or put ourselves in a better position where it is easier to pry off. 15) More often than not from guard we will need to USE OUR LEGS PRY GRIPS OFF, USING A KICK. Legs are stronger than arms; we should utilize the strongest parts of our body. 16) Some grips will require you to peel them off by the base of the palm. IF WE CAN’T BREAK THE GRIP, AN ANGLE ADJUSTMENT IS NEEDED (example: half guard kimura reversal). 17) If none of these options are available, we will need to FORCE A REACTION TO MAKE THEM LET GO of their grip voluntarily. 18) BLOCKING PEOPLE FROM TAKING DEFENSIVE GRIPS with increase the success of your offense, substantially. Always block grips when you can to make an unfair playing field. YOUR 2 GRIPS VERSUS THEIR 1, OR THEIR NONE VERSUS YOUR 1 WILL ALWAYS BE MORE FUN… 19) Two extremely important GRIPS YOU NEED TO TAKE FOR YOURSELF AND PREVENT YOUR OPPONENT FROM TAKING ON YOU are: 1.) the HEAD and 2.) the UNDERHOOK. If you opponent grabs your head, you need to stop and prioritize getting your head free. 20) Fighting grips for defense: All positions and submission ESCAPES ARE ESSENTIALLY ALL JUST GRIP FIGHTS WHEN YOU’VE LOST THE GRIP BATTLE. 21) FIGHT THE HAND TO ESCAPE SUBMISSIONS.

That last tid bit was a great point, "I dont have a ton of darce choke escapes memorized,I just fight the grips." A lot of times I get asked how I escape certain positions and submissions, and a lot of the time it just comes to prioritizing the right grip to fight or the right hook to get set and so on.

I really like that you focus your videos on grips because it does simplify the game of BJJ. Either you have grips and control your opponent, or your opponent has grips and you’re trying to break those grips. Everything else comes after.

Hello from Upstate NY. I have watched this video a bunch of times now and it has helped me a lot. The grip fighting has helped a bunch for me with maintaining a scramble and not allowing my training partners to be able to grab a hold of me. I think the biggest "AHA" moment for me in this video is when you said, "Girps aren't just your hands, they're also your legs." I found that my grip fighting with my hands was good but I was lacking with pummeling the legs and keeping my training partners off balance using my legs. Thank you for continuing to produce A+ content..

Just started back again after 4 years. First roll with the coach. His advice was ‘you use frames very well but you’re not using grips at all so your just blocking without controlling’ this video really helped me understand how grips actually work rather than just trying to remember what grips were used when I was shown a specific technique. Hopefully now I’ll be able to actually set up a technique rather than just looking for them

Was looking forward for that one since you announced it, and again a really helpful video. Its often things that are totally logical but till somebody tells you , you do not realize them while sparring. Appreciate it !

Amazing videos with great pointers! Love how you use clips from older videos/rolls to give a better picture of what you are trying to articulate. I can only imagine how long it took to edit the video though. Thank you for the hard work! :)

This is the best video I've ever seen you make and that's saying a lot. Your repetitive use of the word grips is key. Your knowledge of your jiu-jitsu theory, sense of humor and teaching style keep me dedicated.

I just watched every video on your channel and man, your production quality has gotten really really good. These vids are 10/10 in quality. The explanations are spot on, and the slow mo shots really help me see what’s going on. I only started bjj a couple weeks ago but I think these details will really help me on my journey. Much love.
