I'm so glad that you covered this, Jeff. I was literally just telling a fellow student last week who is very frustrated with her inexperience with grappling that, strangely enough, grappling in all its forms is a cooperative way of fighting in that essentially both opponents have essentially agreed to do it when engaging in it... and therefore you always have the option to either disengage or not engage at all. (Please keep in mind I am talking from a grappling standpoint only, no takedowns or strikes involved). The difference IMHO is when your opponent engages you in a clinch and/or takes you down or throws you. Now your only say is to escape, which of course is easier said than done which is why this video is so helpful. Thanks for posting it. With this said, I have found in my own experience that the instinct to get back to standing is so naturally ingrained that many people, regardless of their experience, end up naturally doing many of the the techniques you showed here. I just think many people have the feeling that "Oh, I got taken down and I'm not good at grappling so I'm kinda screwed now." There's always an option as you have just shown. You may have to train it specifically and put some work into it, but it's certainly there. P.S. I'm loving your recent spate of "Do This, Not That" KZbin technique shorts. Just gold. Thanks as well for those and please keep posting them. The one on proper punching technique where you stress taking your head offline made me go white as I realized when watching it that I had NOT been doing that at all in my recent sparring sessions and couldn't figure out why I was always getting counter hooked on my jab. That was why. Thanks for the reminder.

Haven't fully watched the video yet, but wanted to comment on the "just stand up" part. I will say that sometimes that is possible and a decent strategy if you can do it and are better on your feet. That being said, being able to standup in and of itself is a skill. A decent wrestler could stand up.

that's nature...works way better when you're the only one who understands it...also, i'd love to hear your thoughts on a trend i've seen over the years...a lot of the mma community came in disregarding tradional ma as useless and outdated...i've always said the traditional stuff is extremely effective IF you train to fight with it, and that's the issue with most tma schools...however, i feel the more mma advances and evolves the more it starts to resemble tma techniques...oblique kicks, spinning kicks, spinning elbows, hook kicks, trapping, karate-style punching, arial kicks, etc., all techniques that used to be scoffed at but now everyone accepts them as legit (tho trapping i feel is still in the early stages of acceptance in the mma community)...i feel like we're going to come full circle and see that the old ways were 100% legit, we just lost the practical applications training and had to rediscover it...

Probably one of the most under-rated skill sets of MMA. It truly takes a mental toll on any wrestler/judoka when you get up immediately after a take down. Probably the most clear example was Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Valasquez. When Cain got up after 3 seconds of being taken down I just knew the fight was over. Brock put everything he had into that take down and it was taken away so quickly.

Most styles can work, aside feom the ovvious bullshido/self defense stuff that never gets stress tested through routine sparring and competition. Depends on how proficient the practitioner is, how good their teammates amd coaches are, and what their favored system is built around. Sambo, judo, wrestling (both catch and reg), bjj, boxing, muay thai, karate, TKD before it turned into gymnastics and point sparring, kickboxing, all can work really well and used to complete other each other. Non-combat sport/martial art related activities or background can help too. Look at Lomachenko. Utilized dancing and gymanatics. I caught a high round house from somebody who I was hand fighting with and they extended to long guard from the clinch. Never had to consider that until the athlete said they used to do ballet before doing muay thai. My lead arm was glued to the back of my head and air tight (ear hole covered and literally face in arm pit with rear hand ready for body and turned into the kick) but it still cleared my guard and the base of the shin hit the top/side of my head. I didn't think it was possible to generate that kind of force from essentially a standing split position on the very tip of the toes. Also, if you've ever grappled with a professional breadmaker or rock climber. Them paws are vice grips.

12:17 How do you go about sparring with striking vs someone going for takedowns? There were a few moments when you clearly held your kick back and slowed it down to not hurt them, and they took the kick (to the ribs) and rushed in for the takedown. It's kind of annoying because if you went all out on that kick, they would likely think twice before trying to eat a rib kick just to grab your leg. I always wanted to practice more of my strike defense, but it's hard when my opponent doesn't really respect any of my kicks because im trying to not hurt them lol
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 7 ай бұрын
at the end of the day it is just sparring and practice! What you said is true, but what can also happen is that the guy taking the kick is tough as nails, or rather take a kick to the ribs in-exchange to get the takedown. Anything can happen in a MMA fight, thats why the sport is so crazy!!
@Shack

@@MMAShredded Yeah def, plenty of people can keep walking after taking some devastating blows haha. I always wondered if there's a better way to go about sparring, to test the effectiveness of your strikes and to not build false confidence in yourself if your opponent is also always pulling their kicks/knees as well. But I guess like you said, it's just sparring, not actual combat

Could you make the previous two videos you made on these topics not private? Would love to see those videos again

@MMAShredded, how do you manage to stay cool and technical with those shouts you’ve got around you and can be loudly listened in the background?? They drive me tense as I watch the video; I would assume it is even more disturbing when in the middle of a sparring session.

When I got my blue belt a few years ago I went to the fight team at my gym since I had done some striking and a lot of my Jiu-Jitsu was not very effective and I was not very good at wrestling up or getting back to my feet and I got punched but in learning that it actually helped my Jiu-Jitsu because it changed my perspective. Also Jiu-Jitsu is much harder when someone's trying to punch you in the face

These take downs are only working well in a friendly test fight, but NOT in a real fight. In training like this, the person who uses take downs rely on it, that the opponent will not hurt him, because he is not a real enemy, just a friendly training partner. In a real fight a real enemy simply would bring a crushing blow with the fist on the head, rear of the neck of the person who is trying to do the take down and the person would succeed with the take down, but he himself would fall unconsciously (or dead) to the ground and lose immediately.

Of course it’s lost it’s peak effectiveness, the technical elements of it have been discovered, understood, and countered. When bjj was first showcased, people had legitimately never seen an armbar done before. Everything about that submission from its setup to its finishing techniques was brand new and no counters were known to the general population outside of a few highly exclusive communities. Now I can get literally a master class on all elements of the arm guard on KZbin in a weekend.

@jeff chan where are you living and training these days bro? Are you still based in NY? If you are, what happened with the Win Chun Academy that originally moved you to NY to coach there full time? Haven't seen you there for a while now and keen to hear the story of what happened and where you've ended up?

No one martial art is enough hence why it is MMA, but it doesn't take long in mma to competently defend submissions especially the top 10 most common submissions you see in the UFC and then add being sweaty on top of that and it's difficult

Not allowing upkicks when your opponent is inside your guard is a dumb rule really hinders bjj. They wanted to ban soccer kicks, but they worded the rule in such a dumb way that also banned when both fighters are grounded.
