The motor has no magnets so it can't make a magnetic field to regenerate the power. I still don't know why electric car manufacturers can't or won't put small alternators on each rim with a main inverter to recoup some of the energy being used to spin the wheels. Would definitely give a much longer range. Also, why doesn't this guy have a backup battery bank in his frunk? That would've solved the problem without having his car towed or bothering a friend, if they're not busy or asleep at the time.

@2meters25 жыл бұрын
Nice test, thank you ! This tells us how far below 0 a Tesla can go : I noticed that the meter went to 0 at 2:26 into the video. At that point your "km since last charge" is at 186.6. Then at 4:16 the car officially shuts down. At that point, your "km since last charge" is at 194.7. So you went 8.1 km below the 0 mark. That's not a lot. So Tesla's 0 mark is not like the "E" mark in gasoline cars, where you still have another 50 miles in the tank.
@Streaky1000016 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the slow charging is to avoid thermal runaway I believe, If you charge a battery to fast, especially from very low to begin with, the cells of the battery can start to break down, causing a lot of heat and that then causes nearby cells to break down, causing a chain reaction, making the battery very hot, and if this continues the battery can catch fire. Obviously Tesla have put safety precautions in place to prevent this.
@mibars6 жыл бұрын
This slow charging at the very beggining is to preserve batteries, low voltage can cause lithium to crystalize on electrodes. It means less lithium salts and electrode surface will be available and poses a slight risk of penetrating separator with this metallic lithium. And that, in turn, can cause thermal runaway if internal short circuit does not clear itself before meltdown.

Tesla why you aren't providing booster cable to share power from another vehicle ?
@volkerblume2386 жыл бұрын
Erik Lachance sounds like a nice idea but you hardly get in this situation. If you are below 20 km you get really nervous so you will charge. You even don't get power out of the car. Towing away is easier than charge transfer which would also consumes time and endanger that you have 2 stranded cars in the middle of nowhere. If charger is defect and you have to reach the next one with low state of charge the transfer could be helpful. But I guess it requires extra Hardware and Software implementation including safety handling when the low battery has a defect which cost compared to the usage cases an enormous effort. Additionally it requires an extra type 2 cable/adapter extra for this purpose. Let's see if Tesla surprises us and offers a solution. :)

Great video. Anyone who is fortunate enough to own a Tesla should probably practice this at least once. I would throw a small flat head screwdriver in the tool kit just to make it easy to pop that two hook cover off. Also a very important observation is that the tow hook actually has a left handed thread. It's good to know how to put it in tow mode too. All of these things will make it easier to recover in an emergency. Having said all that, there is probably no excuse for letting the batteries run out.

So for the moment his video confirms that I cannot entertain the idea of Tesla given the manner in which I use my vehicle.

@HeinrichErnst16 жыл бұрын
We once recharged an electric converted A2 by towing it by another car. Saved time and mileage we would have wasted at a charger. In your case you wouldn´t need to go with your tesla into tow-mode, but just use the pedal as sensible in the area between full and no recu, so that you just use some 20-30kW of the towing car´s power to recover, while some addtional 50kW of thrust will pull you to the next supercharger. Something that else only air-force planes can do like refueling in the sky, whereas here asphalt is serving as your "refueling" tube... : )
@ipekarik6 жыл бұрын
Great video. :) So, the reason why you should screw the tow hook all the way in is :D, when all threads of a screw fit neatly with all the grooves in the assembly it's screwing into, and at optimal torque (not just screwed in, but tightened), then the entire surface area of the screw evenly distributes load to the chassis, giving the assembly optimal strength. By leaving the tow hook screwed in at, say, 50%, only the latter half of the tow hook is transferring load to just the first half of the hole in the chassis. This still might work, but the loads on the assembly would be nearing critical. Go further out, and the load transfer won't be big enough to accelerate the mass of the car; the tow hook will just tear off the threads in the hole and pop out, leaving both the tow hook screw and the hole in the chassis ruined. And possibly hurting someone or damaging something in the process, as the tow hook shoots out under tension. But I imagine saying that into a camera in the middle of the night while being frozen isn't really to be expected. :D Great job, mate! \m/

Well, you can't run a car entirely on solar panels, as you pointed out, it would only make it go at about 7km/h in bright sunshine, (i'll take your word for it), but, it would extend the range just a little bit while driving. sometimes that extra kilometer or two could make all the difference. and also. if you leave your car out in the sun parked for a few hours while you are at work or whateveryour car might have given you at least some free power. Maybe enough to get you home, depending on how close to your workplace you live.

So given there is no hand portable battery pack available for lugging to a garage if you need some fuel, it's a shame tesla is behind the curve when compared to mobile phones, my Samsung S8+ can operate in a mode which charges other phones via its USB-C connector. You'd have thunk a simple change could allow Tesla's to use a cable to act as a charging station for another vehicle for recovery and it would be a no brainer.

I read a report the other day that did a 5 year cost comparison with a Model3, Honda civic and Toyota Camry. Taking everything into account... vehicle cost, fuel/charging, service, insur, etc...the Tesla was $3000 cheaper over the 5 years. Based on $3.00 per gallon gas and .10 /kilhr elec., same down pay and interest rate. So if you can afford the Civic or Camry you can afford the Tesla.

@@Fukkit_ Part of that is Tesla never requires any fuel, and pretty much zero maintenance. No oil, brakes last 200k+ thanks to regen braking. all thats needed in 5 years are wiper blades, washer fluid and maybe a set of tires.

This is a bit sad. I have my driving license since 1995, I know that it is older than most viewers of this video. Back then it was normal thing that driver knows all about towing a car, replacing wheels, replacing dead light bulbs, replacing oil filter and air filter, replacing all liquids, some basic repairing skills... Now you have to bring your car to service for smallest thing and towing a car is like the most technical thing that you can do with your car.

Two things that I've noticed.. No 1, those 1st emergency warnings were actually telling that car was srarting to switch off high-power consumption units, such as A/C and seat heatting.. No 2, DON'T use a key to open compatments, espefially if it is a useable key as I know all too well how easy it is to bend one.. Allso I wonder how Tesla work in freezing conditions..? Does it expire juice faster..?
@Amphibiot5 жыл бұрын
Tesla works quite well in freezing conditions because the battery cooling fluid also doubles as battery heating. Other electric cars didn't really bother with battery cooling/heating, and as such they perform a little bit worse in the winter.

Hey man, great video! Had a technical question about an alternative; wondering if this would work -- And sorry, this is going to be a VERY long comment, however, it might be enlightening to you (I hope :-): Correct me if I'm wrong (unfortunately, I don't have a Tesla, so I'm not sure about this) does this car have a capability of charging It's big battery utilizing plain old house current (such as 110 V AC here in the states)? If so, could you feasibly have one of those powerpack units (basically an electric generator with an inverter on board) which has AC outlets and utilize IT to charge the car (at least enough to get you a few miles, to safety, etc.)? Now of course, it would take you considerably longer, most likely, then having somebody with a friendly Rudolph to tow you to a Supercharger, etc. but I'm wondering, to save you from having to even tow it at all, if you had a fully charged battery-pack-inverter deal in your trunk and simply plug that into the car's charger port for maybe 20 to 40 minutes, could you maybe get 5 or 10 miles (Or let's talk your language - maybe 12 to 15 km?) utilizing one of those portable battery packs? I utilize one that I keep in my trunk to charge my battery enough to start my old-fashioned gasoline motor if I, let's say, left the lights on - or have not driven the car in a couple months. The unit I have also has AC outlets, which can indeed be used to power & charge things. I'm wondering if one were to certainly have one of the LARGER powerpack/Inverter units, I wouldn't be surprised if that is a potential possibility to charge the Tesla just enough to get it a few kilometers down the road- curious to know if you've ever tried that. Lastly, just thinking if you don't have a friend with a "reindeer" to tow you (or it's very late at night and a towing company would cost you €100 or something) I can imagine that having one of those powerpacks could be a potential workable solution. Alternatively, if it's during the day, I suppose one could even go a hardware store (if it's open) and renting a petrol (very powerful) portable generator and maybe even get 20 to 50 km of range - in any event, it could be in some cases preferable to being towed. Would LOVE your feedback on this and if you care to try, would be interesting to see you run an experiment with one of those (shooting a KZbin video of course). PS, Okay one last little idea which probably wouldn't work but here's the thought: I wonder if you would even get just 1 or 2 km of range by taking the 12 V battery on the car, connecting it to an inverter and then plugging a charging cord into the car's charging port from the inverter connected to the car's 12 V ( accessory) battery. I'm just talking maybe even 1 or 2 km of range(?). Again, might be an interesting experiment (well, if it doesn't void your warranty :-) Lastly (I know I keep saying that) another idea would be to at least just have an inverter in your car and utilize somebody else's car battery with their engine running to run your inverter to charge the Tesla enough to get a few kilometers down the road. If your powerpack battery is running low, you could do the same thing as a pure inverter by connecting the powerpack to a friend's car battery with their engine running keeping your powerpack charged… while charging your Tesla. Again in some instances, could be a lot cheaper and less of a hassle than paying a towing company to tow you!

I don't know what a "CHAdeMO adapter" is (Or exactly how that's a reply to my comment) but I'll look it up. Even though I didn't understand your short reply, I do want to say, thanks again for all your awesome videos!
@voicetube6 жыл бұрын
Okay, I looked it up your comment and maybe you misunderstood my comment; I'm talking about AC charging using standard house hold current (Utilizing a portable electric generator battery pack). I have since discovered that Teslas do come with a 110 V (in the US) household adapter/unit, so you don't RELY on 220 V; you can plug the car in anywhere with common household AC voltage (although of course it takes a lot longer to charge). That way you could hook it up to one of those rechargeable battery pack generators (technically). Somebody on KZbin actually tried it and it worked - says it would give him 4 to 5 miles. But it was one of those very LARGE portable power packs and he needed to use a unit to bypass a "ground fault" alert that came up. I would say with the standard portable battery pack (that one might keep in the trunk) you might get one or 2 miles if you're lucky. (But it could be one or 2 very valuable miles :-) In any event, as to your comment (so as not to confuse other people like me) on the Tesla website it says: "Take advantage of the global network of DC charging stations by enabling onboard hardware and purchasing an external adapter. CHAdeMO stations enable charging at up to 150 miles of range per hour."

Great videos! Maybe you could talk about types of chargers you have in Norway and talk about how much do they charge per kWh? For example in my country (Croatia) not many people have electric cars in general so there are not that many charging stations (it's increasing though), but all charging stations (for now) have free charging. Happy holidays ans keep up the amazing work you do, love your channel!

@nvidican4 жыл бұрын
Instead of tow mode and holding the brakes to keep the tow rope taught, you can put the car in drive and the towing will actually use regenerative braking to charge the battery as you tow - this is in fact the fastest possible way to recoup your charge because regen braking can get up to 60kw - short of a supercharger Guys running EV on drag strips have long used this method (since most drag strips don't have any ev charging options at all).
