Awesome video, the view from the bottom a great idea very helpful. While I highly doubt anyone could pull off any of these moves in a tournament (unless they have super human reflexes and hand speed) I see how some of them could work if your opponent is very tired and suffering from limited mobility and extensive blood loss from injury while you are still fresh and unscathed.

Or maybe most tournament fencers just suck in historical accuracy ;)

Disarms do happen in tournaments, it's just many competitors do not train in them much. When they do, they work.
@vengefulone5725

Well I guess the problem is that blunt feeders are used in tournaments, they don't bite into and bind with each other like real swords so there isn't really any opportunities to do these kind of techniques as they slide off upon contact. It's a training artificiality that I allowed to alter my viewpoint, if it didn't work Meyer wouldn't have wrote it.

@Vengeful One A bit late but, oh well. The individual techniques of a system are generally less important than the principles they teach. Sure you won't usually be able to perform a textbook disarm on the spot, but the skills gained from the drill can be adapted to similar situations.

The fifth (from Kron) is a strange one. A fencer just grabs a sword with a single hand from opponent's two hands with no twisting or anything. Yes, the position when both fencers go with arms high is the best for a disarm, but this particular execution will work only if one is much stronger than the other.
6 жыл бұрын
Dmitrij Bugajev When you expect the disarm...sure...to hands are stronger than one. But in our experience the disarming comes very surprisingly. Try it out :)
@SeanArcherSDA
@SeanArcherSDA 6 жыл бұрын
But there is 'twisting' if you watch how he grabs the grip then rotates the sword out of the weaker part of the opponents grip.

@wecysdeava4193 6 жыл бұрын
Dmitrij Bugajev You need to make turns of the sword so you won't grip it firmly in most of the time.

And... if the opponent does not let go of the sword, most of the time he/she wil come in a bad position.

Hi! Thanks to your videos I have a much better understanding of how different medieval weapons are actually used which helps me make myTTRPG games better ;) The whole topic of disarming is still a topic of mystery to me though: 1) Could you try to disarm someone if you fight with a weapon and a shield, or do you need one hand free? 2) Are there any weapons that are particularly good at disarming? Thanks and keep up the great work :)

I remember seeing a video somewhere online where the the dude used a longsword, one-handed, and twirled the blade around the other dude's blade, and through sheer kinetic force, used it to disarm the other dude....Have no idea what the technique was called, but I've been looking for it.

Would the third disarm still work if the opponent does not press the wrist while half-swording, and instead keeps both hands on their grip?

I will say, I have one complaint here. Now these can be done, but.. my issue is she's just letting you take it. In a real sword fight, no one would just let go of their weapon and just let you disarm them. They'd try to keep a grip on their weapon. Of course! I know you're demonstrating, but it'd be great to see it demonstrated with her fighting back, and then seeing how it'd go from there.

Hey, I have a question. Can you disarm sb with bare hands by grabbing the sword or will you be seriously hurt while you try? In the Scene I have in mind someone threatens somebody, so he holds his blade still. The person threatened is supposed to grab the blade near the hilt when the other does not expect it, twist it around while thrusting it forward, so that his opponent loses balance and his grip on the hilt. The question is - is it possible without any gloves or armour on? It's important for the book I'm writing on.

In principle, it is possible to take a sharp sword without serious injury. Even without gloves or armor. Just don't wrap your hands tightly around the blade, but pinch the blade between the tips of your fingers and the palm of your hand.

These seem like they rely on the opponent having an iron grip on their sword. Not to say it isn't accurate to the manuals, but to say these might be less Functional than the authors hoped
@grahammacbean4989
@grahammacbean4989 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, you usually just gain control over their sword and can stab or cut them with your own. If you are actually trying to disarm them, the quick twisting ones are best, while the ones where you simply grab the handle and pull are more about unbalancing the opponent or gaining control of their weapon. I think of them as swapping out your hand for your sword in a bind, which frees the sword to do other things. You can also just kind of hang on to their sword and follow their force around, so that you maintain contact and control. Wearing g gauntlets makes these techniques even harder, but you can always just grab the handle to foul their shots and limit their responses.

No one is going to let you just take their weapon. To see if the technique would work. Have your partner resist.. REALLY RESIST
4 жыл бұрын
These techniques are all historical documented and they work. If an opponent is all the time holding the sword like a iron fist fencing would not really functional. They have to release the grip from time to time to keep techniques flow. If they are all the time prepared for disarmaments they will lose the fight. The trick is to disarm your opponent in the right moment. Sure, if they see it coming they could try to resist. But this is happened from time to time. Techniques will be countered or techniques will work. Thats fencing :)

@ Great video, this definitely seems like something that's much easier done without heavy gloves on. I know with SPES heavies there's nearly no room left to grip onto and take their feder.
