This abandoned TREK MTB gets RESCUED from a parking garage

Left behind in an apartment complex by a tenant on the go, this old Trek 4300 MTB collected quite a bit of filth. The combination of old, dried out lube and exhaust fumes from parking garage storage was thick, but behind it all is a great bike! Last year I found an excellent bike cheap like $20 at a garage sale which like this bike had been stored for at least a decade and the shifters were frozen. Like a fool I disassembled them and a dozen parts flew all over my messy garage and I never was able to reassemble them. If only I'd have flooded them and walked away for 30 minutes.

To be fair I was going to bleed my own brakes for the first time and then had a front derailleur issue. Took it to the shop and had em do it all. Thanks for all the content and we all learn every day at our own pace. Have a great day!

What you said at the end of the vid about bleeding the brakes: Yeah, I agree. Do the nasty stuff lots of times so you get used to it. Unfortunately, hydraulic brakes are here to stay. Maybe it's time to rebuild a few front suspension forks too, no? You said it first.... You're a pro bike mechanic, gotta be able to do it all!

I really like this video because I can relate to the bike you are working on. I got a 2014 Trek 3500D (frame)for free (in pieces). so im building it up with my son. amazon and local bike shop parts. mostly because i always wanted to build a custom bike when i was a kid in the 90's.

I've watched several of your videos, but have yet to see you dissassemble a wheel to regrease the bearings. Is that something you skip in your videos, or just avoid altogether? I've flipped hundreds of bikes since 2007, and regrease nearly all the wheels that are attached to a bike I sell as 'ready to ride'.

Wheels are the most expensive and most important part of a bike. Everything else besides the fork can be replaced for 10-20$

Hello, I truly enjoy your videos. This one I feel I need to comment on. Regarding the rear brakes. You questioned yourself a couple times on their feel. If I may respectfully say, if you are looking at a possible problem more than 2x? Then maybe there really is an issue. In my experience, it could be something as simple as topping off the fluid without a full bleed. Or on the other hand, the fluid may somehow gotten contaminated. Either way when the customer pulls on that lever, maybe they will question it as well. I personally would never say to them, that’s good enough. I mean no disrespect to you in any way. I own a bike shop. 80% of my business is used bike sales. I am a viewer that watches every single video you make to the very end. That Thank You for what you do for our industry.

At 34:50 , replace cable and all sheathing and service shifter / check chain model number / compatabilities , IG , HG ,HG-X etc . Also cable pinch point at the derailleur and guide at tensioner .

Have you ever had the compression fitting in the steering tube malfunction? I was changing my stem and handlebar on my surly bridge club and had to pickup a new M6 bolt to attach it and after preloading the steering tube I decided to remove it to add my Fred Bar for my aerobars and the bolt just spun and spun and wouldn't come out. So I've got the bike down at my LBS to see if they can get it out. I've seen them freeze up due to rust but my Surly bridge club is not even a year old.

Need to bleed/flush out those brakes. The old fluid gets bad over time. Not only will it cause braking problems, the parts inside can corrode and get stuck/sticky.

The 4300 is post 2011 due to the badge and graphics combination . I have seen grease sludge on a drivetrain before . Mine is from 2009 but immaculate .

Hey, the pads are not always good enough quality. Replace them by new ones from recent production I recommend. At least the rear.

I have a 2013 6300 which is the last 3 x 10 setup with 26' wheelset . It is being refurbished . I also have 6010 and 8020 Shimano cranksets as an option . I will use Deore M 6000's though .(42,34,24)

I really thought you were going to come to a conclusion on that derailleur. I think you need to inspect the derailleur itself because, as you were shifting, the view from the back appeared as though, based on movement, one of the hinges is cracked/damaged or very bent. I haven't seen one move like that, though I don't work on bikes but my own, so limited experience here. Also, 100%, yes you should dive into the brake bleed process. Though that one might only need fluid added for some reason, but... Listen man, getting uncomfortable is what makes us grow, in so many ways. Get uncomfortable with figuring out hydraulic brakes more until you are comfortable. It only makes you more knowledgeable and, therefore, more valuable, which only makes you more popular and again more valuable, so you can charge higher prices than you are, because you're a pro. Or you'll become one if you maintain that mindset for life. Learn what you don't know, stay challenged. It keeps life interesting. Thanks for the informative vids. I'd really love to do what you're doing. You're inspiring me to change my career to doing something I love.

I have done repairs , restorations , special builds and presents too . Seeing a person's reaction to getting a freshly built bicycle from me is very heartening . I have an abundance of new components to choose from . I also have a riding group but Jenny is acting leader as I am going into hospital for prostate cancer surgery shortly . I won't be able to ride again until I get surgeon's clearance and even then , softer leisure saddle will be the norm for me .

I've been riding a Trek 4300 since July 2007. I really like their "wishbone" frames👍👍. I slowly upgraded all the parts/components; the only original part is the sh!tty headset spacer😁. It has M739 XT V-brake levers, M760 XT V-brakes, a M770 XT HallowTek 2 crank, an XT M770 front dereailer, an XT M772 Shadow rear derailer, TITEC 7075 H*llbent riser bars, a 7000 series aluminum Thomson Elite 130mm stem, a 7075 aluminum Chris King Royal Navy blue headset, M772 XT Rapid Fire plus shifters, an XTR 970 9spd. cassette with the 4 L cogs being 6/4 Titanium; and lastly, a 7000 series aluminum 410mm Thomson Elite seat post🤘🤘. I know, a bit much for a low to mid range frame; but I bought the parts and components I wanted🤘🤘

I was wondering that too. He should say what everything is that he uses and why, because so many of us out here don't know. I always explain technical things to people in the most detailed but simple way possible, as though they don't know anything about it, because I don't know what they know or don't know. I tell them that before I start and that they can interrupt me if they already know or understand. If they're someone who doesn't, however, they'll likely be grateful that they learned something new.

If it's not a performance bike, why not have a kickstand on it, and a good rack system, and some lights? Put some practicality into the bike. Have a bike you can live your life with, and not have to depend on the gas pump.

All accessories are necessary, kick stand, mud fenders, chainring guard, even a bell many times will be problem solver. Here in Finland, front and back lights are mandatory in dark winters.

Aluminium is the correct word. If you are going to have disc brakes get mechanical they are fully adjustable and a lot easier to set up

when derusting a disc brake rotter if the oils in your skin gets on said rotter i can cross contaminate the pads and rotters face please use gloves when cleaning them
