When I watch the time and effort it takes, it is no wonder custom frames are expensive. I know it's a long way from done but it looks great.

If I were a rich man I would commission a bespoke frame from you. Then I would fit it with some fancy hydraulic breaks just to hear you ranting about overcomplicated solutions and how cantilever breaks rule. Jokes aside, I'm a big new fan of yours. I like your style.

Well, I'm editing that stuff right now and it's really not all that great. It's super hard to get good footage of stuff I suck at doing. It's probably going to be a bit of a let down, but still valuable and worth publishing I think. I think it's good to show you don't need to be a master craftsman or artisan to build your own bike frame.

Cut and try. Cut and try. Cut and try. I guess a good part of the world is built with cut and try. You know,.......there's a lot of people who just don't understand that. If some new product has "bugs," cut and try may fix it on the next go round. Good video.

This is so cool. Beside riding bicycles and haphazardly turning the wrench on my own bikes my other love is woodworking - particularly luthiery, as in building acoustic guitars. Wood is so much easier to work with, but it's a living thing and can move on you based on weather conditions. My real bane is power tools which have literally chewed up and spat out my latest project, but I've opted to not throw it in the burn barrel. Instead I'm attempting to fix the mistake by going back 5-6 steps in a process that was about 80% done, so I understand your frustration. Kudos for keeping at it, and if this one turns out to be a dog then build another. That's what I'm also doing.

Thanks! Very nice job with the tube miter/coping. Question, though: since you are using lugs, how important is the tube miter fitment? Is that joint structural? Or is the lug serving that purpose?
@bkefrmr
@bkefrmr 7 ай бұрын
It’s probably not that important. But better to be safe than sorry 🤷🏻‍♂️
@easkeybikes1966
@easkeybikes1966 7 ай бұрын
You should always have your miters cut as precisely as if you were going to tig or fillet braze the joints. Any gap between the head tube and top tube or down tubes, for example would mean that the loads at these connections would be supported by the lug alone, which is not an ideal solution. It's much better for the lug to serve as a reinforcement to the joint, as would happen with proper, precise mitering with minimal gaps,

Your cat’s name is Greg? I’m considering going to bike building school in Tucson for 11 days, it’s going to cost around $4,000 when all is said and done, but they supply the bike cad, jig, tubes h(including a reasonable amount of mistakes) ,frame lugs, braze ons, brazing equipment. I figure by the time I source all that stuff myself, I’m fast approaching $4,000 for something I’m going to use once and really don’t need again or have the space for… I live on a sailboat, so a workshop really isn’t an option.

@@bkefrmr figure out what it would cost you if you had zero equipment and had to buy it all new, considering you have no idea if you will be able to buy any of it used AND the shipping to you if you do. Plus the cost of frame tubes that multiply every time you screw up. It's not as cut and dry as not going to a school to build a bike.

@david78212 7 ай бұрын
@@bkefrmr exactly. I do know how to braze, I worked summers and after school working in my stepdad’s auto body shop and this was long before tig and mig welding, so we used to braze in replacement sections of a body panel. The only other thing we had was a gigantic spot welder for floor panels. But now I really don’t have the equipment or space for properly working on bike frame tubes.

Surely there must be someone in your small town who you know who has a milling machine? You could try hole saws on a pillar drill but they often don't have the rigidity that you will need to keep everything aligned. These type of machine tools should be common in the agricultural heartland! 😊

Why filling the tubes to such precision when the lugs are not only hiding the connection but also doing all the structural strength? I mean, the tubes could be just barely in contact and it would not make a difference? After all the tubes are not welded to each other, they are welded to the lugs, right?
@bkefrmr
@bkefrmr 7 ай бұрын
Theoretically, if it's not a tight fit, you're depending on the lugs for structural integrity, which would be more prone to stress fractures. With a tight fit, you have a good chance of creating little fillets at the joint. While this is technically true, I question its practicality. Seems to me like the lugs would provide plenty of structural integrity on their own. Better to be safe than sorry, I suppose.
