I love the slightly critical comments about Meryl Streep getting nominated just for being Meryl Streep, independently of the actual performance. This happened quite a few times. She's a good actress but definitely not deserving of a nomination for every movie, specially compared to other great performers who don't get one. However, it's almost not possible to write something critical about Streep without some brain-washed people protest against it, since they see the world through the eyes of the media which always glorifies her unconditionally.

Your so called "love" for the critical comments against Meryl (yours is the only one on the comment section of this video, at the time of my comment) wasn't this apparent until she spoke against the President of US, which in itself speaks of your irrational thinking..

@joshv35856 жыл бұрын
I think she's a great actress, but most times than not her films are not great films. Her unwillingness to work with directors who would challenge her is her biggest mistake. But I can appreciate the diversity of her work, and when it works it works beautifully. I don't know why she was singled out. Many of her films have not been box office smashes, especially those she was nominated for. Many are modest hits, with a few blockbusters scattered throughout her career. I always wondered why her and not, say, Sigourney Weaver or Glenn Close from the same time Streep came into the scene, why did Streep garner so much praise and so much accolades from award groups. It's not as if she was everywhere in terms of publicity. Like Katherine Hepburn before I guess we just got use to her being around for so long that it would seem odd to shun her now. But no, her nominations for The Post, Florence Foster Jenkins, Julie and Julia, and Into the Woods were not warranted (the more recent of her nominations). She was fine in them, nothing against her work, but not worthy of a nomination.
@gauravw69476 жыл бұрын
Josh V IMO, Weaver (despite being a great actress) hasn't been as versatile and consistent as Close or Streep.. Also, I feel Meryl deserved the nomination for The Post and Julie&Julia, infact she was more favoured to win for the latter than Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side.. And I also think that an actress at her age doesn't have much opportunities to choose her directors and when she gets that opportunity with a good role, she has worked with challenging directors like Mike Nichols and Spielberg..

IMO, Cher deserved the Oscar for Moonstruck. In a different year, she might have been eclipsed, but in 1988 the competition was not all that strong. She also had the advantage of appearing in a well written movie (that holds up even today) with a whole array of extremely strong supporting performances (Olympia Dukakis won Best Supporting Actress). I also think she should have won for Silkwood, but that is another discussion. Generally, I think she is a better actress than singer. Moving on to Glenn Close, I can't believe that she is still Oscarless - but Fatal Attraction was, IMO, too cartoonish to be the film that did it for her. The greatest "shun" that year was definitely Lillian Gish.

I somewhat agree with that. I wouldnt go as far as saying its cartoonish but i always thought FATAL ATTRACTION is over-rated. I agree with this video i wouldve given it to HOLLY HUNTER

Especially good commentary on this one---a year of many incredible performances. Your comment about being a huge Cher fan, yet acknowledging a should-have-won for Holly Hunter, is refreshingly honest. I personally was pro-Cher before it was fashionable (visualize a pimply teenage guy in the early Seventies, salivating over her appearances in the skimpiest costumes ever seen in prime time, while he tapes every episode of the 'Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour' on a little cheapo audiocassette recorder.) The Oscar competition was truly fierce--Glenn Close's turn into Crazytown is downright iconic--but Cher really nailed it as an Italian New York widow. The rest of the talented 'Moonstruck' cast, the story, and even the interiors of the Castorini house, truly resonate with any of us who have Italian backgrounds. It was a worthy win that year.

Christopher Hamilton I feel sorry for her but we can't just put another woman's talent like Lady Gaga's into nothingness just because Glenn Close is long overdue. If you give Glenn the respect that she deserves, you must also give that respect to other actresses who gave their best. Or else, the fate of Glenn will also be inherited by them. as they say, history may repeat itself.
@cinemaholic7306 жыл бұрын
Kzar DS To be fair, I have not seen A Star Is Born yet. I have nothing against Lady Gaga, I'm sure she gave a great performance. But I have seen Glenn's performance in The Wife. It was subtle. She did such great acting in some scenes without saying a single word. Her performance I felt it, not just watching the movie but afterward to.
@jackanthony9765 жыл бұрын
The 1980's was not the beginning of Cher's movie acting career as a star. Cher's first starring role as a dramatic actress in a motion picture was in a film called "Chastity" released in 1969. I saw the film upon its release in 1969 and she was tremendous and was in practically every scene. However, Cher never mentions this film nor does anyone else. Everyone, including Cher herself says that Silkwood was her first starring role.

This is one of those years when multiple people in the same category deserved to win, but I think she deserved it. Her performance in _Moonstruck_ was incredible! She was the heart and soul of the movie.

I agree that all of the factors you mentioned conspired to make 1988 Cher’s moment, but there were other factors in favor of “Moonstruck” that year, including Olympia Dukakis’s presence (and ultimate Oscar win) as supporting actress, timed perfectly with her cousin Michael’s presidential campaign.

Maggie Smith in The Lonely Pasion of Judith Hearne deserves to be nominated and even win. Anne Bancroft in 84 Charing Cross Road would have been a worthy nomination too. Both Maggie and Anne won Baftas for their work.

No disrespect to Cher because her journey from sonny and Cher is completely admirable. But till this day I at least here one person quote or talk about fatal attraction. Glenn close’s portrayal of Alex is just iconic. I’m a veteran and a man but I can identify how it feels having ptsd or mental issues. I just think Glenn deserves that Oscar and she will forever be my favorite actress. Also thank you for these videos they are awesome

Holly Hunter was phenomenal in Broadcast News. Moonstruck paved the way for the romantic comedy to become a box office juggernaut in later years. Films like When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping etc. owe a lot to Moonstruck.

Sally Kirkland’s performance was incredible, but there is no way she had any chance of winning that year. Sally was considered to be a low-rent, second tier actress, and I think her performance in Anna took a lot of people by surprise.

You've explained this much better than Cher's actual bio-musical, The Cher Show! In that show, the whole Oscar campaign is crunched into one song montage of her continually going to the Oscars and "Trying with another film" until she wins. It's probably one-third the length of this video when it could make a whole freaking show by itself!! So, thank you for this. After being curious and unsatisfied seeing that show, you've cleared this up for me. Also, for what it's worth, Broadway veteran Stephanie J. Block just won a Tony for playing an older, post-Sonny Cher, so that should tell you how much of a figure she's really become and how long her legacy will really last.
