I learned on a Blüthner - my original teacher taught me on a Blüthner - and this is the thing. Other pianos don't all have the same touch - and also don't have the same strength in the upper register, instead producing a thin sound that fails to balance with the middle and lower registers. When I heard you say "what a joy it is to play this piano", I collapsed laughing! Only three other pianos I've ever played have produced that reaction!

I remember the first time I played a Bluthner. Nothing has compared since. If I could only afford one!

I'm from England and currently having my 1880 bluthner style 6 completely reworked. It's costing a fair amount but it's keeping a beautiful piece if history from being scrap.

Gorgeous instrument and fantastic playing! I love hearing you play, Robert. I also love hearing different brands and models recorded in the same environment for comparison. Lovely channel and beautiful musicianship!

I love this piano! It has a clarity and focus, yet fully developed overtones that give it a richness not found in many pianos, especially of that size. It also seems very even in all the registers and singing with great sustain.

I've always been a fan of Steinway, and have been for a long time. I've always thought they had the best sound and feel for Solo, Orchestral, and Chamber works. But after hearing a Blüthner in action. I just have to say it is one of the most beautiful sounds produced by any piano I've ever heard. I don't play on many different pianos, but I do hear many, Yamahas, Steinways, Kawaii, etc. But absolutely none of them compare to the Blüthner. It has this rich tone throughout, amazingly clear and precise treble. And a strong and powerful bass. Truly no other piano can even begin to compare with the sound of a Blüthner. Sorry if my comment was long winded, This just felt like something I needed to say.

Thanks, you made me realise I'm not delirious when I say it has round and warm bass, and round and clear treble. It's, I don't know, akin to someone speaking: the bass are like a comforting whisper, whilst the treble are like someone softly telling you gentle words.

I had the chance/privilege to play one in college. I only played it once. No other piano since then has compared!

I own a Blüthener baby grand piano (made in 1935 and completed restored with entirely Blüthner materials imported from Germany), but it does not have the aliquot action. That is because Blüthner only makes larger models (parlour grand and upwards in size) with the aliquot overstringing. Despite being derived of the aliquot action, it still has that gorgeous, lyrical tone for which Blüthener is so well known.

I really find it interesting how scarce these instruments seem to be outside Europe. I'm living in Germany and Blüthners and Bechsteins are certainly among the most common instruments from the pre-war era - the "golden" era. On the other hand nobody here has ever heart of Baldwin or Mason & Hamlin. That being said: I do own a 7'6" Blüthner X from 1908 and yes, these instruments are among the best instruments of this era. They are just gorgeous. The Model VII (6'3" without Aliquot) or model VIII (the one in this video, 6'3" with Aliquot) are wonderful. I'd probably take a 100 year old Blüthner or Bechstein over a comparable Steinway.

Beautiful piano. You might try a different position to record. The corner position with hard floors and walls gives rise to a lot of competing, fast reflections.

I want to buy an upright piano from Blüthner built in 1919/1920 and would really appreciate it if you could tell me your opinion on the upright you have. How tall is it and when was it built? Does it still have the original action?

Something bad was done to this piano. It doesn't sound like original old Bluthners, they sound much more pillowy and delicate and here upon restoration it was given a more neutral, more of a Steinway character somehow.

a joy to play? I am not sure. The aliquot technology has not been adopted in this instrument, as the inner views show. Indeed, Blüthner has produced a small number of pianos without. Strange that you talk about this technology whereas this piano hasn't any of it. You have not mentioned the patent action, so I presume it has been replaced by a modern roller action, a change that many Blüthners of this vintage underwent over the years. This kind of rebuild is not particularly better or worse, but it pushes the instrument towards a modern character. Cosmetically it has lost its originals legs, music stand and finish. Not sure about the lyre. This piano seems to have turned into a modern instrument with only distant memories of its former glory. Still a good piano though, but not half as good as it used to be, especially in the tenor and bass ranges. We've got two Blüthners in the family from the 1890's, one style 5 and the other style 8, both fully restored. The style 8 nearly intirely to its original condition. Cheers, Willem (Belgium, EU)

Honestly, I don't understand the hype around Blüthner. I tried some B. pianos, I didn't like any of them. This one just confirms my dislike. Very blurry and the sound is unpleasant.
