Doug Arnold Tool was an acquired taste for me but grabbed me after I first heard them at 16 when the song Stinkfist came out in 1996 off their second album Aenima. At 16 their songs went way over my head and only after I saw/heard them live did I really appreciate how unique and complex they were, as I hadn’t seen or heard anything like it before and had seen hundreds of bands live like Metallica, Panterra, Pearl Jam, Faith No More, Sound Garden, Maryline Manson, Korn, Placebo, Whole, the Offspring, RHCP etc etc If you watch clips of Tool in 1994 before half of those songs in the concert came out you’ll hear silence from the crowd during the songs new songs partly because they had never heard anything like it before. Songs like “Pushit” and “H” and a bunch more. Going from Grunge bands, to that.

Listening to Tool is an introspective experience. Don’t go into a song with expectations, try to go with their flow instead. Use a lyric video to understand the song better, but don’t expect to understand the track on your first listen. Tool’s songs get better after listening to them multiple times, because they reveal themselves to you more with every experience. Good luck on your journey. Enjoy it.
