People guilty of adultery were once given a letter "A" to wear. The letterman gave out those letters. This was a genuine law that existed two centuries before being referenced in the novel "The Scarlet Letter" that everyone will falsely claim to be the origin of the concept (The choice of scarlet was clearly a nod to the novel though, the law itself didn't specify scarlet: "Every Person and Persons so Offending, shall for ever after wear a Capital A of two Inches long and proportionable bigness, cut out in Cloath of a contrary Colour to their Cloaths, and Sewed upon their upper Garments, on the out-side of their Arm, or on their Back, in open view". Being "Unable to forgive your scarlet letterman" is to hold a grudge against those who have exposed your weaknesses/failings, rather than to accept and learn, in order to maintain the ego.
@jaymecarlson86853 жыл бұрын
Is that true about the person handing out the letter? I've always interpreted the scarlet letterman to be the "varsity adulterer" of whom the song/grudge originated from. One of my favorite Maynard lyrics easily.
@psukebariah34353 жыл бұрын
@@jaymecarlson8685 The scarlet letter I think originates from the Hawthorne book. Technically Hester ought to have been stoned to death, or otherwise executed, but because she was pregnant the community was merciful and forced her to wear the letter instead.
@jaymecarlson86853 жыл бұрын
@@psukebariah3435 It does for sure, but I was always assuming the letterMAN aspect of the lyric was a combination of that and a varsity letterman in the high school athletic sense which together would mean something akin to a accomplished cheater, or a serial cheater. The band has done this dual name combo thing before with Aenima and Pushit being the first to pop to mind. I had not known of this "person who gave out the letter" meaning before now which throws my idea into question.
@psukebariah34353 жыл бұрын
@@jaymecarlson8685 Maynard (and Tool) do indeed do combo meanings in their song titles. I was speaking more specifically to the idea that a scarlet letter was "often" given out for adultery. What was "often" given out for adultery was death. The "scarlet letter" was an anomaly.

The cornerstone to me was always the grudge you are holding onto so tightly, that you build the building of hate/negativity around if you continue to clutch it. I think he then goes on to tell you to let it go before it drags you down into the abyss. But you can only let it go if you Choose to. You have to choose to let go of your grudges for them to lose their weight and let you resurface before you drown in a sea of hate and discontent. This Journey we listen to Maynard go through on these albums is amazing. So much hate for religion and others, to finally transforming into acceptance and retrospection is phenomenal.

I'm not a trained astrologer by any stretch, but I find the Saturn transit fascinating from a Jungian individiutian perspective, so I've delved into it a bit, and I think that's also why Maynard is using it as well. Astrologically, Saturn returns (comes back around) to it's position in your natal chart every 26-ish years. Being such a slow moving planet (I think it's the last "personal planet", the rest are "generational"), it's effects can be felt for an extended period both before and after. And it can be *hardcore*. Saturn is the planet of rules, boundaries and endings...and can and will f up your life. If you are holding on to the wrong things - how you think your life "should" be, even if it's really not. Marriages/long term relationships can end, job loss, housing lost...and llegar kinds of hellish scenarios, including severe illness. All to get you to let go. And continued holding on can wreck you. Letting go and heading in a more...authentic? direction, even if it wasn't where you thought you were headed, or what you thought you wanted, can bring some excellent advantages. That's the mythology, anyway. And having gone through a pagan phase and a spiritual astrology phase, I've read some powerful personal accounts. I recommend looking into it. So that's my...$.10. Enjoying your reactions to Tool.

I love the last couple minutes of this song, tell you to turn your grudges into gold, bring the beginning of the song back around giving you time to think about it, then SCREAAAAAAM and hopefully on some level you're screaming too, letting your grudges go, best use of a scream in a song ever? You not expecting to have feelings listening to metal is one of the reasons i detest pop music so much, this isn't really something i like talking about because i don't listen to it and am therefore not qualified to talk about it intelligently, but pop music reaches billions of people and kids and those artists have such a great opportunity to talk about real things not just recycled garbage, it makes me feel like those artists are so shallow they couldn't even if they wanted to. These screaming angry metal musicians probably care more about you than anyone else in the music industry.

Disposition, reflection, triad. With lyrics for reflection. Think you will appreciate the message. Also as a father you might enjoy Invincible. Since you mentioned masonic brothers, the metaphor for alchemy of turning lead to gold should not be taken literally as solid materials, but figuratively for your mind/body/spirit. If you make your anger/grudge your cornerstone you will never rise from your base existence, if you are still doing so once Saturn comes back around 29 years later, what a waste. After years of living in constant mental pain I believe I understood something. The only way for me to get my life back and save myself (yes, I mean what you may think I mean) is to get rid of the grudge I hold. To forgive. I can't even comprehend it, but that's my glimmer of hope, more soothing than anything I used to kill my anger, resentment and sense of failure. Some part of me refuses to forgive, but I know that's the best thing I can do to myself. My hatred makes no difference to the person I hate anyway, it only consumes and destroys me. "Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and Transmutate this cold and fated anchor. Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and Transmutate these leaden grudges into gold." If you're too at the very bottom of your life, please don't give up. I hope we can all find our way to give away the stone that breaks, humiliates and drags us down. The stone is heavy on your backs, but as soon as you let the ocean do it's job, you'll feel light and blissful. (The Grudge may be my favourite Tool song. Certainly helped me the most.)

Not sure anyone REALLY knows what this song means but Saturn Ascends refers to Saturn completing it's journey around the sun back to where it was when you were born....every 27-30 years I think. I'm not super into astrology but I've read it says this age when you reach true adulthood and are presented with the opportunity to let shit go and continue towards enlightenment or to be dragged down by stuff you can't let go (song references lines like "the 1/the 10" {tree of life}...and "lifts you up like a child/drags you down like a stone"). You have another of these opportunities again at 54-60 and again in your late 80s. Way more in depth than I can get into in a KZbin comment but I think that's the jist....maynard being mad at someone who can't see this and continues to be drug down by the grudges they can't let go. I am an idiot tho so I could be WAY off. 😃🤷🏼♂️

Vicarious should be one you consider soon. Yes always have lyrics up and headphones so you get the masterful editing. No bubblegum music hear.. TOOL music is educated, thoughtful, insightful. I am enjoying your journey..

This song on another level! Also I have 3 kids and 3 grandkids. None of them progressed at the same rate, but the most important thing is, through the benefit of hindsight, all those negative times or the CONS of raising babies are so fleeting. I only vaguely recall all 3 of my kids having the worst colic you can imagine for 2 wks. Seemed like a long nightmare living it. But time handles all that negative and the bad times get fewer and farther between. Never really catch up on sleep, but I don't regret any of it.

Keep 'em comin'! Vicariously reliving my initial Tool experiences through your channel has been a thrill and exercise in enlightenment. As someone mentioned, this band seems to have a sixth-sense into when to enter your life. When you have the time/energy, explore their earlier works off Undertow...specifically Flood. And when you're emotionally ready, Prison Sex. I'd wait awhile before Wings For Marie 1&2 (off 10,000 Days), that takes emotional fortitude to work-through. If they tour in your region, make it a point to go

I consider TOOL the Priests of Sonic Truth! In the lyrics, in the music, and in the energy of their songs. The body knows when it hears the truth.

His scream in this song gives me chills. I guess he was letting go lol. You are probably gonna enjoy “Vicarious” when you get to it. Not saying you should get away from Tool, but you should take a very brief break and check out A Perfect Circle “Judith”. It’s another one of Maynard’s bands and it’s about his mother and her faith.

I remember 25 years ago visiting my brother in Sacramento for the summer from me being from nebraska and hearing Eulogy on the radio. You wouldn't have heard stuff like that on the in Nebraska at that time thinking "that was awesome who was that"? And my brother kinda laughing and saying Tool. When we got done working that night I immediately walked 5 mins down the road to this cool little record store called Dimple records and bought everything they had released from 91-99 so opiate, Undertow, Aenema, and saliva and came back from bugging out about Tool and i havent stopped at damn near 40 years old. Damn time goes by so fast the older you get

Apparently the scarlet letterman lyric refers to some book reference that I still have yet to fully understand. This one grew on big time. Maynard sets it over the top.

As a Freemason, I know that your brothers can attest to the fact that "transmutating" lead into gold is one imagery we use in the Fraternity. And, it is used in many areas. One that is rife with symbolism and begs a closer look to those that have eyes to see and ears to hear.
