They are not citizens, they are permanent residents. They would never give up their American citizenship for South African citizenship, because it would severely restrict them from travelling back to the USA to visit family and friends or to travel anywhere else. My significant other is a foreigner and it took him a very long time and a lot of money to get permanent residence from Home Affairs.

An American passport opens so many doors for you while a South African passport severely restricts you. So it depends on what you value most in life. I'm fed up with the discrimination against South African travellers and the immense struggle to obtain a visa to study/work/go on a holiday anywhere else in the world. Something which we wouldn't experience if we had that American citizenship and passport.

@@maruskaehrensdorfer what does SA passport restrict you from doing? Sometimes we need to be stopped and saved from ourselves. Thousands of Americans have lost their last penny from this open unrestricted travel, some are lingering in foreign prisons for fraud and other crimes, something that would not have happened (to some) had there been some form of vetting and 'restriction' on their travelling. You have Americans travelling to Japan on holiday, travel around that corner of the world in and out of Japan because its easy, run out of money, become drug traffickers around Far East Asia and only stop when they get arrested. And then you have those who land in countries they didnt plan to go to, get scammed or spend 000s on women. Poor Americans who left the country with 00s of 000s of $s in their bank accounts to go on an unrestricted holiday in Asia are hiding in Indonesia, too poor to go back home. For me, the only advantage i see in an American passport is when the passport holder gets arrested abroad. US has prisoner exchange with any country that wants that. SA on the other hand is one of the two/few countries in the world that will not entertain that, NO prisoner exchange for us, you do time in the country where you committed crime.

​@@offtoanotherworld7434 Most of our visas are being abused, and the government is trying to stop all this. Immigration is at the top of the list of grievances from South Africans. Many people who don’t deserve to be in our country are here. Currently, the government is reviewing all about immigration laws, and new laws are in the process, including international treaties that we signed with the world. The minister was giving a press briefing sometime this week, and if you can listen to it, you’ll understand where we are with regard to immigration, citizenship, refugees, and asylum seekers.

It would appear that the SA government is concerned that the applicants will not be able to support themselves, long term. If there is a disability issue that may, de facto, raise the barrier. If they prove that they are self sustaining, then they will have cleared that hurdle.

Other countries require proof of x amount of income. I just Googled entry requirements for South Africa. They're 12 requirements for visitor visa. For residency, it's proof of financial independence, a permanent job offer, exceptional skills, refugee, pensioner and more.

A Retirement visa for 4 kids to live in South Africa? Retirement from what? She is still in full nursing age, whooping it out to the lovely restless little one. The South African government would be crazy to give retirement visas to people their age. I know there were some corruption cases in SA where they were giving out retirement visas to 20 year old Indians and Pakistanis. No country in the world will accept anyone without critical skills or a fortune to move to that country to be a burden. At least the ANC is right with this decision.

Went through the same thing. I was denied and appealed. I went through DC. I make a lot more than the required amount needed for a retirement visa. I even used a visa specialist to ensure all the paperwork was in order. I pray for your success family. But its definitely a challenging and inconsistent process. I would say that it may be better to start a business that services SA. Idk.

Keep pushing forward. It’s not uncommon for countries to prefer retirement visa’s that also correspond with traditional retirement ages. Some countries even identify an age for example at least 50. Generally age discrimination applies when individuals are 40 or over so not sure how that would apply in your situation not knowing your ages. Countries really do have discretion to do what they want. But persistence pays off in the long run. ❤

There are 53 other options, trust your not set on one that can be disappointing over time. Research the English speaking territories unless you speak other languages or willing to learn other languages or find reputable contacts on the group f b groups etc., in said territory of interest. Look in to the requirements...you may surprise yourself with possible fulfillment for you and your family. Peace and all the best!

1. We said NO to Europeans who wanted to use our country as a retirement village, we will not say YES to Americans. This is a developing country and not a place to retire. 2. Black Americans have abused the no visa travelling to South Africa and i believe thats one of the triggers of the investigation. I think the questions they ask are very valid. The same gets asked from locals by the US. The reasons that SA is cheaper does not automatically get you an acceptance, or if we had to go on that basis, then every in the US would qualify. Sorry, I think my SA embassy is corect asking those questions. I hope you can respect that. I hope you can humble yourselves on that. All the best on your journey, seriously. Not everyone will get approved, it's life. And SA has been abused by people so the government is taking a tougher stance. I agree. CT is becoming a tourist town, and locals aren't affording. Why is it so damn hard for people of African descent to go back to the continent of their ancestors? Our people has been here for centuries and still fighting colonizers. Now we have to fight with our own to enter the continent of the people we came from. Just goes to show how they sees us as black in the diaspora. Just try and look into neighbouring countries and how that might improve your prospect of finally relocating here,we're always heartbroken to hear such stories when Africans from the diaspora people are determined to come back to their homeland.Look into Botswana,Namibia first and then eSwatini and Lesotho which are both within SA 🇿🇦. The south african retirement age is around 55...i think your age played a role in their decision ...and also the disability that you are recieving they view in in a way that could go away...(you know get stopped for whatever reason in future) ..so if you had savings ..they can see you would be able to sustain yourself if should your disability get affected or something
