Those speeds simply don't bare thinking about - over 100 on dual carriageway and pushing 100 on unlit country roads. The level of concentration and continuous risk assessment is way higher than any racing driver has to do on a race-track just going in circles.... Must have been a potentially very serious incident to put that level of skills out. Stunning driving.

If anyone is wondering why sirens are being used whilst there is no visible traffic, trusts generally insist that they are used between certain hours ie 0700 to 2230, though this can vary on the area whereas between such times use of them needs to be justified 🙂.

The hilo is a very effective siren....more effective than the wail and phaser put together! hilo is basically a wail and phaser mixed together and is great at short distance and long distance but has been faded out for just the standard 3 tones, nowadays its just your standard RSG sirens fitted with the same 3 tones and don't even have bullhorns fitted, its apart of this new nonsense scheme for response drivers to not come across "aggressive" when responding hence why you hardly see bullhorns used now and responders waiting 89 hours to go round a car that hasn't seen them rather than blast a bullhorn or the cars horn at them., hilo just seems to grab attention better but yeah hardly any get fitted with it now unless its a private ambulance they normally get fitted with RSG rumbler tones that have all 4.

RSG control units mostly newer ones can be reprogrammed with all tones and bullhorns but it’s quite a fiddle and you need a software to do it

It still actually amazes me how long it takes some drivers to realise there is an emergency vehicle behind them, even in broad daylight it's not that difficult to see or hear them, but at night it's especially easy to see a Christmas tree of blue lights hurtling towards you from any direction. Too focused on themselves and their phones or music to be interested in what's happening around them!.

Could you explain your thought process between 0:35 and 0:47 and where you wanted the van to go? I feel like as the driver of the van I would have been confused as to where you expected me to go since you were pretty much in the middle of the road, discouraging the van from changing to the left lane.

Hi and good question. I positioned myself in the middle as I wanted the van to stay in the right lane and carry on so i could split the lanes and traffic so in essence yes, the positioning was to encourage to lane change at all.

Thanks Chris. Question about the situation around 3:40 - double whites and limited forward vision/anticipation. Here in the US, some instructors advocate shutting down lights as well as sirens, so traffic can continue at normal pace until circumstances better permit you to request the right of way again. Any thoughts?

It's largely down to the discretion of the driver and always the individual situation. Though at traffic lights, if it means civilian vehicles will need to contravene a red light to permit an emergency vehicle through the rule is to extinguish lights and siren until the traffic lights change.

What is the flashing white light I can see reflecting off the hood? It looks like the lights used in the US for pre-empting traffic lights, do they have that in the UK?

It's simply spot lights in the roof boom. Some response vehicles in the UK display blue and white to the front and blue to the rear when in motion then red to the rear when "at scene". It tends to be paramedic cars with the alternating white, though police cars are fitted with white spot lights they're not permitted to be used when in motion. Though this may differ between force areas.

Great video as always Chris, and just a thought for people generally, many of the lights for internal car "night vision", are beyond our vision range, but could be hurting our eyes as they can't react, so please be careful. Check the manufacturers advice carefully.

About those high beams, doesn't Audi have matrix LEDs that only exclude the spots of oncoming cars or those in your lane? In the video, it seems like they're always shutting down completely (always quite late, too) when there's traffic. 🤔

One of the many problems with various high beam technologies is that they just don't work! Automatic Highbeams and Matrix LEDs just cannot respond fast enough and cannot predict cars it can't see that a human could expect, or they generate tons of false positives that make them useless

I've an interesting one with certain Audis and matrix LEDs - by coincidence often get followed home by the same person driving an Audi with them at night when leaving work at a certain time, when I'm in a regular car i.e. Qashqai the matrix LEDs actually work brilliantly dimming me out and providing extra light to see people on pavements, the hedgerows, etc. but if I'm driving my pickup or in a van though it dims out the rear view mirror area the wing mirrors are lit up like small suns compromising my night vision and in vans that is often an issue as they don't have a rear view mirror just the wing mirrors... quite dangerous.

Would you ever consider turning off the blue lights when following on a double-white line? Even with just blues and no siren on it seems clueless drivers think they need to let you pass like that bus and van did. Obviously this is on them, not you, but I know you already hang back so not to pressure but if you can't pass anyway then would "going dark" on blues be helpful? People can't drive any faster than the limit anyway even with blues on. Also nice to hear the honking to switch tones is gone! And did I hear a pip of bullhorn at one point as thanks? Great video as ever.

Double white lines are put in place where there's inadequate visibility to make a safe overtake at normal speeds. At higher speeds the risks are even greater.

Increasingly clear that people just don't understand that you're not allowed to cross double white lines. Really confuses people - you can see them thinking 'why isn't he coming past?!'. Public education needed maybe? Suspect few know what the rules for blue light driving are.

Permitted to cross a solid white line yes but only when the vehicle being passed has stopped. Though a stop can be called when the vehicle is still moving but its speed has to be almost stopped. There are actually quite a lot of rules that still apply even on a response run.

I always hated coming up behind bikers. We had a response call, turned out to be a fatal, to a biker. He was wearing a fixed visor helmet, reducing hearing and limiting sight, but, the cretin also had earphones in, playing very loud music. Didn't give himself a chance. Was the bus at a bus stop, or did it just stop. Even if they do, it is still technically illegal to cross double solids, but they gave no alternative. This is where the British driving is let down. They get taught to pass a test, not learn how to drive, or respond to emergencies.
