As a Turkish who lived in China for 4 years. I can relate to your situation. In China, many people have never seen a person with beard or with a western face. They take your photos on public transportation, some asks to touch my beard or take a photo with me out of nowhere. Sometimes it feels good, sometimes troublesome. So after 4 years of living in Beijing, I give no s*** unless someone physically disturbs me. So my advice to you is that try getting used to get lots of attention lol.

@East West yes but that isn't racism since by definition they arent hating towards the Syrians because of their skintone. Its more of discrimination, however, there is a reason why many Turks dislike the Syrian refugees in Turkey, not every Syrian in the world. I remember I visited Turkey in Ankara and a bunch of these kids or something begged for water and money, we gave a bit but once they saw the food we had in our hands they started to attack us. They really got no respect, we opened up our country for them, we expect respect you know. That being said not every Syrian in Turkey is like that, there are professionals who are Syrian and are very respected.

Why curious?!! Its not like black people are fron another planet! Were living in the 21century. Isn't few centuries of exposure to black people enough to familiarize with them?! People like to gloss over blatant racism, but you can't fool us, black people.
@theliberalthinker33084 жыл бұрын
@hunchoz hunchoz I expect no one to stare at me if I go to a Western European country. Don't be apologist for racism by comparing it to innocent stares of villagers (curious about meeting people they've never seen before) to the stereotypical "stare" of white people who think it's funny to have black skin, big nose etc... The white stare, particularly in Western Europe isn't innocent -- there are black communities everywhere you go; there are so many famous athletes, celebrities, TV personalities and politicians from those communities. Western European citizens is well exposed to dark skin people in their daily lives. It's not like white people have suddenly discovered "dark skin". Comparing curious African villagers stare to the white "stare" is just a weak argument. The stare of the White people is history-laden and it means racism, inhumanity and indignity for Black people. It's reminiscent of the not far away past of exhibitions and open museums to display black bodies, living bodies stripped of their spirituality, for a good "stare." Back then, white children and also adults wanted to touch the dark skin on display to see if it's like theirs --that is, if it is human. It's reminiscent of black people stared at an public auction, purchased and taken home as any other commodity. So a "White stare" has a lot of historical meanings that isn't available to any other curious stare.
@theliberalthinker33084 жыл бұрын
@hunchoz hunchoz You seem to see things simple, but even your definition here still reinforce my argument. If you stare at me because I'm black and you're surprised that I am here, then you discriminate against me based purely on my colour! Don't you know that staring at people is rude? I mean in Europe you can't stare at people and expect no reaction at all. People don't stare at people for no reason -- it's either they suspect they know you or they're just rude.

About the staring; when i first went to USA as a Turkish man in my 20s, i felt like people stared at me a lot and judged them a little for it. But now when i think about it, i realise its's mostly because you are a bit different and people are surprised to see a different face. If you have an attractive or distinctive face you may even get more stares. Also average Turkish person sees maybe one black person per year, so it's like a rare sight. As you said some people are ignorant in Turkey and some people have a bad attitude towards life and other people. This is not about you or your skin color or race, this is that person's own problem with themselves that is being reflected towards you.

Hey, thank you for sharing your experiences 👍 About the staring : in my opinion, the majority of the people stare because of curiosity. When I was in Niger people did the same and even more, like people were trying to "rub up" my skin color 😂😂😂 kids were following me in the streets, people also touched my hair to prove if it was real 😂but I never felt uncomfortable because I knew their intentions wasn't bad or negative. They just wanted to know about my person which is a privilege. So my advice: be proud about you looking different and being treated like a celebrity 😊 By sharing my experience I just want to tell you that people in Turkey don't mean it in a negative way😂 they are just curious about strangers or people or things they don't know yet. They even name soccer players to show their "knowledge" and interest about your origin 😂so they try really hard 👍You know, people in Europe are not interested in others (due to prejudices, in my opinion). Personally, I prefer being among people being interested in my background, my culture, my language etc than ignorant people. Good luck and best wishes 🌹

@precursors4 жыл бұрын
@@GloryOkings Well you basically mentioned your friend’s experience for not getting a mask and said “i don’t know if it was because he was black or racism”. That was very misleading, as hundreds of people here already explain in comments why your friend was not sold a mask. And for more than half the video you complained about people staring at you. If you were a blond icelandic woman or a jamaican man with rasta hair or a chinese woman, people again stare at you, also the reasons why has been explained by hunreds of people in the comments. People staring at you was because you are different, nothing to do with you being black. Yet you titled the video “Black and living in Turkey”. How is that not misleading? I understand that you shared your experiences, but when you say “your experiences as a black person” your discomforts point out to Turks generally being racist. Even if you don’t believe or mean that, people watching the video percieve that way.

I am living at Turkey too in Istanbul, black people is not rare here, you can see them literally everywhere, so people used to live with you side by side for many years, so they dont stare anymore. I think the reason why people especially looks at you a lot, it's because you are pretty :)

I visited Istanbul for the first time I'm 2017, as soon as we arrived in Taksim someone walked up to me and started touching my dreadlocks. It was so weird and after a long flight my reaction we quite intense at first, but then tried to explain why it's inappropriate to touch someone's hair from an African perspective. I don't know if he fully understood, but he walked away. It was a big culture shock

I'm quite sad that many youtubers like you who shares what is like to be a foreigner in X-Y-Z country feels to need to state that these are based on their personal opinion and experience. I don't get why some people get easily offended when their country has been critized a bit. Anyway, staring is a bit of Turkish thing, even if it is not the level you've been experienced. Also Turks are usually super direct, no-bullshit type of person with a Mediterrenian cheerfullness twist (except Northerners).

İ hope the super direct, no-bullshit doesn't mean randomly asking for sex on the streets, or trying to grab a girl's ass on the street and some stuff i can't even mention here. Oh if you're a black woman here in Turkey expect to be overly sexualised (despite being a minor)

Wangari I mean someone may come to you and ask you out, it's not an issue here. But what you did mention is harrasing, and it's obviously not a norm here. I don't want to sound rude but those things happen FAR commonly in the Africa.

Because of the Covid-19 the government declared that they'll give free masks in the pharmacies. But at first you must use the website (e-devlet) and make an appeal then they send you a message including the code. You say the code at the pharmacy and get the masks. That's probably why your friend can't get the masks, the communication problem..

Staring is generally not frowned upon in Turkey. You can even say that staring is a National sport of Turkish people, especially in rural areas. There is absolutely no malice, but mostly the naive curiosity of a 3 year old child in it. God, you can even see 20 people staring at a construction site for hours here. At this point I believe the protective borders of the construction sites are placed not out of security reasons, but due to stop prying eyes! lol If you take a second to go talk to one of the staring people, (these stares are more on rural areas and not only to Black people of course, but generally to all Tourists) even if they don't speak a word of English, they will find a way to communicate with you this way or another, most often then not in a very entertaining way. And they will surely ask you and your whole family/friends to stay for dinner (and probably offer you everything they got), at the VERY least they will offer you Chai (Tea) and/or Turkish Coffee :) After sometime believe me those stares make you feel like a movie star, once you notice they contain absolutely no ill feelings. And considering how gorgeous you are, you must be getting a little more then the usual stares. :)

Ohhh and about the face mask, on May 2020, there were a limited amount of face masks being sold/distributed, and they could be bought/given away only by permission from the government, hence why they asked for ID. There was a lot of controversy about them being distributed / sold / given away etc etc at the time. Since the masks were limited they were first distributed/sold to the health care stuff and other necessary personal. After a week once there was enough masks though the system changed. It has nothing to do with racism :) Same with taxis, especially if it is raining and if they suspect you are going to go a short distance they just dont take you. It is neither racism nor ignorance in both cases.
