I did a video comparison 2 years ago with 14 black art materials, slightly different selection than this so it's interesting to see how it all compares! My favorite ended up being regular gouache (Schminke Akademie) because it's easy to apply, uniform, and affordable. Turner acrylic gouache is much darker and extremely matte, but it was difficult to get the consistency right. Out of the tube it's thick and difficult to paint on, and mixed with water it gets streaky. It's also very expensive. I like black gesso (Pebeo) specifically if I want do draw over it. I find that it's not as deep black as gouache, but it's super even and the surface has a perfect velvety feeling, not like your mix of paint and clear gesso. What I'm getting from this is that some of these properties really depend on the brand! Vinyl paint sounds intriguing, I have to check if it's imported to my country. Price-wise it seems on par with acrylic gouache.

So happy you loved the Le Franc paint! Isn’t it just beautiful to lay down? 🥰 That jar should last ages as the coverage is so good even with minimal product ❤

I use a budget brand black pencil layer with the pitt artist pen big brush 2.5mm over the top. The pencil layer prevents bleed through on cheaper thin paper. Always do a test on your paper first though.

Backgrounds are a new venture for me. I remember the Claire's video & I was looking for a second opinion as it is even more expensive here in Canada. Thanks for all you do to teach us new & useful techniques.

This was another great test video! I don't use black often for the same reasons some of your test products scored low. I prefer to mix my black usually with Ultramarine & Burnt sennia. I need to check out your video on mixing backgrounds. Thanks for all thework you do!

Thank you, i was looking for the perfect Black background. The posca pens take a lot of time😅. Recently i bought a set of 30 neocolor 2 and i would love to see different ways of background, light to dark/ dark to light, more colors etc. The blending is hard to create a smooth transition. Sorry for my english spelling, i am from the netherlands😊. Angela

Thanks for this video. I am fascinated by both your #1 and #2 choices (LeFranc and gouache), have both on my wish list. I used to do more black backgrounds, never cared for the streaking with Posca, or black markers. Btw, have watercolors and acrylic paints in my stash, and never tried gouache before. That WILL change.

Black is a hard one. But if anyone wants a good black. The same brand that Jennifer has on No1 makes gouache. That's really black! It comes as studio version and an artist version. Both are good too. I bought them for roundabout 5 euros on Amazon Germany. ;)

Very interesting video. Thank you for such a great overview. Do you have any opinions on the archival qualities of let’s say the first five winners? Cheers.😊
@NelaDunato6 ай бұрын
Everything except alcohol markers is extremely archival. Black pigments are among the most lightfast. The dyes (in alcohol and water-based markers, and some pens) can fade.
@PursuingHeaven6 ай бұрын
Really surprised you didn't test just plain black gesso, I am very fond of it especially when I use Prisma on top of it, and I don't like flat black, it's not very interesting, I like to layer indigo, magenta (when I want a cool black) or raw umber (when I want warm) and then black Prisma to get a more interesting black. But I will say I love my Flashe paints, they are not promoted nearly enough in our coloring community but they have made doing Kerby Rosanes books with huge metaphoric spreads a lot easier. You can easily color right on top.
