I live in the UK, East Midlands, for about 5 years I have been growing black bamboo successfully in a 65 litre pot, I check it’s root growth every 2 years or so & divide if & when necessary. Hi Hana, I think I got the pot from Wilco’s about 2 years ago, as for the bamboo, I took a root stemmed cutting from a plant that was growing in the garden of a nursery school where I was working, I’ve had it for over 6 years now & still growing & I’m still dividing it when it gets too big for the pot. Great vid! My black bamboo died back more than 75% after 6 weeks below -10c and almost no snow last winter. Last season it grew 2 new canes so I havent given up on it yet. And you are growing them in zone 6. Great work. 😀👍

Thanks! This weather condition freezing without snow for so long is tricky to manage. We get that here too sometimes. All evergreen plants would need water, but it is too cold to water them or the water would freeze and do more damage than good. But since it is building new canes, I am sure it will be fine. In my experience, bamboo takes a few years to get properly established. In which climate zone are you in, also 6?

@@OurJapaneseGardenEscape I am on an island off the coast in the Gothenburg area wich would be similar to zone7. But wet authums and cold winters without snow makes many zone7 hardy plants suffer or die. This winter was no die back on the bamboo, so I am sure it will grow back to its passed glory. It was planted 6 years ago so I would asume the surviving roots from last years die back is at frost safe deapth now. Well established.

Sixth five years ago my father planted some type of bamboo in our yard in Chattanooga Tennessee USA we had the only bamboo in our neighborhood I have loved bamboo ever since❤

The colder it's placed to higher it grows. I have an 15 year old nigra, und moved it after 9 years from a to small shady place to full sun and it lost 2m (6 foot) in hight. Now its 5m with 3cm canes. The dig out was quite a job.

My black bamboo has always done well and it doesn’t spread too fast. I have hundreds of stems here in Yacolt Washington. I planted it next to my shop and it obscures it perfectly. I didn’t plan it that way but it looks like I did! My brother lives in Austria also near Vienna. Is your English accent South African? Great video.

Love your channel! I also started to grow bamboo last year. I want to ask if the bamboo barriers have worked so far for you? I also encircled my bamboos with the plastic bamboo barrier, but I'm still worried they'd grow into my neighbour's yard.

Thank you so much! Yes, so far the barriers have worked. I still check several times a year though that nothing is growing through or over it. If you are planting bamboo close to the fence, maybe the Fargesia type (clumping) would be a better option (this is what we planted along the fence). As for your barrier, make sure it is properly closed off and just keep checking for new rhizomes / shoots coming out. Let me know how it goes!

I planted 2 plants in zone 5 and in winter it died back completely but is now making new shoots. It is May 29 now. I am happy it survived although it will probably never get really large with the yearly dieback.

Does it matter when you prune it? Ours bamboo nigra is pretty brown/burnt from the day we got it. We planted it in containers, and I'm not sure if the potting mix is good enough, as the soil stays damp regularly. Maybe it doesn't drain well enough. Most of the leaves have brown tips which isn't as nice to look at. I would like to trim away most of the brown leaves but don't know when it's best to do that. During the growing season? Do you think they are browning because of the soil/water conditions?

I would just leave the bamboo to it and wait until the brown leaves shed. If the bamboo is still alive, new leaves will grow out from the same branches. This is why I would not prune anything away for now. A normal planting soil will just be fine. Make sure it stays moist, not wet, and that your containers drain well. And hopefully the bamboo will grow again. I made this experience as well with our black bamboo when we got it from the nursery and after a little while of adjusting to the new environment, it turned out just fine.

Yes, this is a way to propagate bamboo. Make sure to cut a piece of rhizome that has at least one larger healthy node on there. I recommend planting it in a pot first and keeping it moist (not wet).

Thank you very much! When we planted the bamboo, we used a special bamboo fertilizer. These days we actually do not fertilize the bamboo anymore because it grows so well and we want to avoid that it "runs" too far. I recommend to use a special bamboo fertilizer or any normal plant/tree fertilizer that is rich in nitrogen (we use organic slow release fertilizer for the other plants). Alternatively, you can also use compost soil to fertilize the bamboo or something like cocoa beans, which we tried on the clumping bamboo and it works really well.

Thank you for this very concise, informative video. We live in zone 9a (Las Vegas) and the ground here is super hard and rocky. We had to use a jack hammer to plant all of our trees. We want to plant this black bamboo as a privacy hedge between our yard and our neighbors uphill of us. Because of the harsh, unfavorable growing conditions, do you think a root barrier is still necessary? Also, what spacing would you recommend?

Thank you so much. Given your ground conditions, this is a very good question. I would still recommend a root block, just to be on the safe side and to avoid future issues with spreading because you are planting it along your property line. I would say it is unlikely that it spreads a lot in the ground you have, but you never know. It typically takes 3-5 years until it starts running properly. As for the spacing between the plants, I'd maybe leave a gap of about 2-3 feet, depending on the plant size. Bamboo will spread underground in all directions and produce new canes from the rhizomes. So, as long as there is space for rhizomes to grow, it will be fine. I would also make sure that the leaves of the upper part of the plant have enough space and light.

This video is fantastic, thank you for sharing with us! We planted 5 of these along our fence last year as we wanted a bamboo hedge in the garden. (We have good root block ~2.5 feet around the plants). But after watching your video, I realized we should have split them into smaller plants when planting. We have 2 foot gaps between them - will be need to propagate them as you described in order to get the "hedge" look? or will they eventually fill in the gaps with new canes? Also, thank you for the pruning guide. We have a couple of canes that are becoming quite tall and now we know how to cut back to our ideal height.

I think the natural growth will take care of filling in the gaps in between the plants. Also, new canes will have to grow inside the root block which will also help to fill in the gaps. Three feet is about the spacing I have between stands. I originally transplanted an established rootball that was about two feet across with no root block. There hasn’t been a dramatic spread at the base but the coverage for a hedging effect has been more than adequate due to the broadening effect of the collective canes. I loosely tie them at around three and a half feet from the bottom. I am in a similar zone to you!

Hi, this will depend on how large your plant is, how large the pot is and in which climate zone you live. The warmer it is and the more mature your original plant is, the faster it will grow and the more canes it will produce every year. However, as a rough estimate I would say that it will be several years until it needs re-potting. Hope that gives you a rough idea :)

I took two plastic trash cans, put one inside the other and cut holes in the bottom, then buried it to its rim. In 8 years, it sill contained.

I would really recommend to use a root block or any rigid plastic that can be closed off. Concrete as in a concrete basin I could see work, but it may be a water drainage issue for the bamboo.

Thank you for your video. I have two plants, one came from the other. The first one is in the sun mostly and get watered daily with the golden bamboo. Both are in pots. The second plant is on the balcony garden it gets mostly shade. I watered it the same as the front one, but the leaves turned brown quickly !! it is also in a pot. I started watering it a lot less it seems to be recovering now! Could it be the sun factor turning the leaves so much?

Thank you! I think the plant in the shade got too much water. Maybe also the water did not drain properly? It makes sense what you are saying that it is recovering now getting less water. Also, maybe give this bamboo a few hours of sun every day, if possible. That should improve its health too. So, less water, more sun and good soil drainage :) Also, because it is in a pot, it may need some fertilizer. Osaka, very nice! I only know Osaka from going through with the Shinkansen, but I want to visit Osaka too the next time I come to Japan :)

Those are new canes. They will grow to their full height and then open up the leaves. This is how bamboo grows. It does not build suckers.

Do you have any tips for growing them from dormant seeds? I ordered a 50 pack from Amazon and dumped them all in 80 degree Fahrenheit water which is what the package told me to do. But besides that, I’m pretty clueless and would love your input. Thank youu :)

I have never tried growing bamboo from seed, but I would suggest the following: after soaking the seeds in water, I would plant them in well draining soil at a depth of about an inch or less. Make sure the soil stays moist (not wet as this may cause the seed to rot). Depending on the climate zone you are in, I would place the pot in a partial shade to sun position and see what happens.
