Stunning views! The black “sand” is probably “fines” from the mining operation. And yes you need a bear bell! We used to use them while hiking in NH and ME

Yep, fines from mining. They used to dump them right in lake. They are not allowed to do that anymore but this is the result of all the years they could.

Oh that’s a beautiful lake! Did there use to be land that went to the island? Can you boat out to the island? Water is so clear and pretty! Does it contaminate the fish?

Hi Brenda, you could boat or maybe kayak out there. The minning operation no longer put it's waste in the water since maybe the 70's or 80's?

Something to put on that will make noise as you walk. This way the bears will hear you coming and hopefully run away.
