Keep your hands in the vehicle at all times!

That's why you don't hang on to the cage in a moving vehicle. You can hang on to a grab bar on the dashboard or a center console but if you know you're getting ready to roll and you're belted in (which you should be) cross your arms and put your hands on your shoulders and hope for the best.

He was sitting on the right side passenger and his left hand (inside of vehicle) was hurt. Do you mean the top of the windshield? Just trying to imagine where he was holding onto…

I was a passenger in a utv rollover couple years ago. I crossed my arms and grabbed my 4 point harness at my chest. I received zero injury’s. The driver reached out “stop the roll”, support herself, or something, I’m not sure. The roll cage broke her arm. The other passenger was thrown clear, the machine rollled to a stop, on top of him, resting on its side, pinning his legs underneath. It was a damn mess. The driver climbed out, and I managed to lift just enough weight up, for him to slide out from under the utv. He was severely bruised, shaken up, but nothing broken. Extremely lucky. We could not flip the utv back on it’s wheels by ourselves. Two banged up people, whom couldn’t do much, and me. So I walked the 5+ miles to another group I could see off in the distance, camping in the open desert. They drove me back, and helped us right the machine onto its wheels. The woman driving, was operating way beyond her skill level. I did tell her to slow down, but she would not listen. I had thought through what to do if she did crash. “Keep your hands inside, grab your harnesses.” I don’t take off road rides with strangers anymore. 😎

And if you can think clearly enough before the impact breathe out because it's better to not have any wind in your lungs during a sudden stop then to have it knocked out of you and not be able to breathe right for the next 5 minutes even if you're not injured.... it's harder to collapse a lung that is already collapsed...

@@abe1176 Absolutely too fast. That trail has zero margin for error for large portions of it, it can and will send you to an early grave. There's no shame in going slower, and if you can't control your vehicle from rolling over after picking a poor line, yes you were going too quick.

Original parts are increasingly hard to find, and expensive when you do. Speaking from experience when my '77 FJ40 pax door got crunched through no fault of my own. Luckily I found an original replacement door with very little rust. But wow it was expensive.

@@DrJohn493 I have the windshield frame on my FJ-40 that came off the one that Lee Majors rolled in a 1981 episode of the "Fall Guy" - I saw the episode 15 years ago on DirectTV; Marv Spector brought it to me in 1982 and said I hope you don't mind the dent in the top and explained how it got there(he bought the wreck from the studio)Now that was 40 years ago and it still cost $250, but it came with the single motor wiper(1968) You wouldn't believe what I did to it, but it was far more spectacular than what Lee did! As of February, 2022 I will have owned my FJ for 46 years!?! Mine is a l965 model that I spent the last 6 years upgrading using all the parts I've accumulated since 1994 back when used parts were inexpensive and available. But NOT "restored" as I have seen lately on KZbin, those folks are misinformed and misguided when it comes to Toyota Land Cruisers and their capabilities. Outrageous prices for parts and no concept as to what makes these vehicles competent contenders in the boondocks when your life is on the line. Who ever heard of a 1980 FJ-40 that is worth $110,000? Sorry, but you just can't buy mine no matter how much $$$ you have, my FJ is not for sale and I do not plan on building another one, and no, I don't need any parts!

I've watched a few videos over the years from Black Bear Pass, and that specific hairpin corner I could just tell from the first time I saw it ahead in the videos, it would be the source of a lot of pain and problems for even some moderately experienced offroaders. Watched the video of the roll over that was far worse than this that Suzie Rhodes was in just before this one, but from another jeep's perspective, and as soon as they came to that corner, I immediately noted the cliff wall jutting out into the trail, the big rock on the opposite edge of the same spot in the trail, and it's short 5 foot steep drop at it's apex as the main culprits that would cause most of the accidents. Well, I didn't think about that loose shalerock slope you rolled on. But add her to the list!

Original parts in good condition are hard to find and expensive when you do find 'em. Can't even get parts from Toyota anymore. Glad you are all ok. You know what happened so I won’t offer my theories,,,,, I just wasn’t there. Scary place,,,,, I used to off-road a lot, but a serious back injury and it’s just too painful now. I never rolled over but got into some terrifying situations. Not this terrifying though. I doubt I could deal with those heights. It’s ironic, I can tolerate a shelf road with a 300 foot drop, but 3000 terrifies me. Either one does not have a good outcome if you go all the way over,,,,,,, hahaha. The power of the mind.
