Hollywood handsome, cocky little creatures, for sure! Jo, you've upped your game with the vocal rendition at the end. What a terrific punch for this video. Loved it! Also the connection you draw between Magpies and the Plains indians. It reminds me that our educational system fails to help students see the connection among all the universe. This John Muir quote seems appropriate: When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe. Another fantastic video, Jo.

Your comments are so specific, Donna, that I always appreciate them. I have Connie view a video every time before I post one, but he's not as.specific as you are--it's usually just a thumbs up or maybe a criticism. I enjoyed the Muir quotation: "hitched to everything else in the universe" is well said. Maybe I'll find a place to use that in a script one of these days. As for the singing, I'm relieved that you approve, but both of us think it would have been better if you had done the vocals. 😉

amazing! i love Magpies, they are one of my favourite birds; many people on the canadian prairies hate them, but theyre just misunderstood. i also love Billy Joel

It strikes me as odd that so many people resent raucous birds like jays and magpies, considering how much noise of every variety we humans make. We create a level of cacophony that no bird can approach. So I agree with you about the magpies--and about Billy Joel, of course!

Oh, yes we do hate them. They are pests in Alberta, diving at and injuring our pets and children. Very noisy, irritating! Wreck every and quiet morning!

Black billed magpies are my most favorite bird! The babies and their constant and continuous screeching makes me want to feed them! It sounds like they are begging for food! They were two of them hanging around in my backyard yesterday and I kept hearing them screech loudly to each other! I hope one day that I will make a friend with one of these beautiful birds! They're so sociable!

🌈😁 Well dadgummit, I relish corresponding with my viewers, but right now I can't, not before the end of August. On the 13th I am having a stem cell procedure done to minimize my carpal tunnel syndrome. Until that has time to heal, I might occasionally type five or six words but usually I'll just paste this answer so that commenters will understand why I didn't respond specifically. Please know that I still enjoy reading your comments. Thank goodness the carpal tunnel doesn't keep me from filming--which I love doing!--but I've had to hire my granddaughter to edit movies for me. One way or another, I'll continue to post every Tuesday.

In our country, this species has spread over the past few years to city parks, probably affecting the life of small birds in cities. But they belong to nature and are beautiful. Thank you for the beautiful video!

Are you in the US or Canada? I only ask because if you're in Europe or Asia, your magpie is actually a different lookalike species. In California we have one that looks almost like those two but it has a yellow bill and is called Yellow-Billed Magpie :)

There has been a study on this and Magpie alarm calls and their ability to mob predatory birds helps the smaller birds a lot and outweighs the negatives to their presence. Additionally, eggs and nestlings only make up a very small portion of their diet. I used to dislike them for their loud mouths but they are actually quite charming and entertaining. They also seemingly took care of the mouse problem outside my house so they definitely have my support.

Nice video! I wonder what the difference is between the Eurasian magpie and your American, or black-billed, magpie. They look the same to me. This bird is very common here in Sweden, and I've noticed that it's also no stranger to Beijing, China. According to this map, the ones I saw in Beijing are of yet another variety, or subspecies: sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skata#/media/File:Pica_pica_map.png Apparently, there are two subspecies here in Sweden.
@JoAlwoodBIRDSANDTHENSOME5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what the difference is between our Magpies and yours. Obviously you've done more research on the topic than I have. Thanks for the info.
@doobat7085 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell (although most noise seems to come from a youngster begging for food!), to me, the most obvious difference is their call; Eurasian pies have their loudest call sound like "chack chack chack" [ www.hbw.com/ibc/species/60753/sounds ], while they're also capable of lovely, shy, warbling songs, not unlike quiet starlings. If you're interested, @breesophiebree on twitter often showcases sounds and behaviours of a Eurasian magpie.
@jic13 жыл бұрын
Apparently ornithologists have been arguing about whether the black-billed and Eurasian magpies are the same species for centuries, but the former is usually known as Pica hudsonia, and the latter Pica pica. Since the magpies of North America are limited to the western half of the continent, their ancestors probably either island hopped across the northern Pacific or crossed the Bering Strait.
