My kinda people, I grew up in a holler back in the '60s. You'd be surprised at how many people don't know what a holler is. Your property is coming along great. Looks beautiful, especially with all the Fall Foliage that is almost done for the year.

Love a good holler, Dean! I find that a lot of holler people respect each other's privacy, but also keep a watchful eye for anyone out of the norm driving through. Neighbors really take you in as family around here and look out for you. I don't think I could ever go back to living in a sub-division again.

For simplicity, cost, maintenance and time to build, I would go with a rock screen but regular watchers know John likes to invent/engineer, so I think we'll be seeing a trommel in the future!! BTW, your Maker Pipe interview was interesting....good job.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Right on, we're considering a grizzly screen. Maker Pipe would make it super easy, it's just the cost of metal is so absurd right now, even EMT. My only fear with a screen is that most of our rock is flat pieces and we'd lose a lot of the smaller pieces we're after. We sketched a few last night and the cost of the metal slats were shocking. We just need a good campfire discussion to make a decision and we'll get building asap. Also, thanks for watching the interview. We were there for Thanksgiving and they asked us to do that, spur of the moment. Next time we do that, we'll make our community aware so they can tune in live and ask some questions.

That was entertaining! that cleaned up the hill nice!! That was entertaining! The trailer is getting some use. Ever think about building your own trailer that's bigger and heavier since you have the wood? Jon, you might want to invest in the hydraulic top link. It's easier to adjust the tines to dig rocks/roots and easier and then tilt back to easily smooth it out. The rock separator (tromel?) sounds great! I think it could work. Perhaps take a a trailer with a chicken screen a couple inches above the floor and drive around until the dirt settles below the screen. Kind of like panning for gold and using a slueth.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Never heard of a hydraulic top link, Bryce. Sounds like it would add some convenience though. The trommel is in the works. I was tempted to build a grizzly bar setup for simplicity, but I think I'd lose a lot of the smaller (skinnier) rocks I'm after. Plus, the cost of metal is just stupid right now. Maker Pipe would have been perfect, but I'd be $500 in just for the EMT. Regarding that little trailer, yeah, I wish we went bigger. I'm probably going to get my pickup involved with the big tandem trailer once we get some distance laid down.

Hi Meg, trommel, rock screens, rock washers, sure! you never know until you do. The $ cost and time to build vs productivity improvement can't be measured until you do it, but you already know what it takes to hand pick and load the cart with each load and what it typically will cover. Jon keep inventing and fabricating. Good Luck to you both! At the end of the Day you are both Blessed to have each other.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, you make a good point about us putting in the work before trying to improve our workflow. The trommel makes a lot of sense for us and worth the investment if it produces tons and tons of rock for us.

That belt on the idler pulley can be a loose fit. On my Woodland Mills Mill it is actually very loose and that was the way it was intended. I would recommend getting one an inch bigger than the one you just put on
@adamroof94602 жыл бұрын
Yes! To trommel. You guys “ rock “ !! There are also just rock screens. Bucket material over a sloped grate and creates two sized material piles. A couple diff rock screen grate sizes maybe. Still like the trommel shaker tho. 🤠

kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3fMm3yhiaiLerc Depends on if you want a welding project and how much the metal would cost I guess vs two barrels and kids bicycle time
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Always fun to build stuff. Thought the trommel would be more of an automated process vs the screen, but I'll definitely consider the screen option. Need to talk to the kids about their hourly cookie rate.

@@WalnutsandWineberries you do have the PTO on Ricky to help spin the barrels via the kids bicycle chains 😄
@rfelectrons2 жыл бұрын
Jon, in order to pre-sift the dirt from the rock, you should use a rock bucket on the front of Ricky. Sort of like the bottom of your grapple bucket, but with the bars a bit closer together. With the rock bucket, you could pick up a pile of material, shake it, and dump into the cart. Perhaps have an overlay set of bars to capture even smaller rocks once you have presorted the larger ones out. BTW, I have had several carts over the years, and the one you have now is like most in that the wheels are a bit small in diameter and the incline of the box when dumped is not sufficient to fully evacuate the material. One cart I had was rather short, so when you dumped it, the incline was almost vertical so it never left material inside. You could put an extension on your axle frame and put larger wheels and this would make the cart work much more efficiently. Randall
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips on the cart, Randy. That makes total sense. Those things are bound to pop with the weight I'm carrying in it over sharp shards. Haha. Maybe I'll do the upgrades at that point. The rock bucket is definitely a good idea but maybe not for Ricky. The grapple I have feels very heavy on the RK24 and I imagine a rock bucket with double the steel would have me driving on my front wheels with the rears off the ground 😆. But man, what I wouldn't give for a heavy skid steer sometimes...

OH MY you two!!! That was so scary to watch! I thought for sure that Meg was going to end up with a hook imbedded in her body when the belt broke and all that pent up energy released at one time. I was so yelling at my computer screen! Belts wear and that's the reason they get loose after a while but belts are not made to stretch amd as you saw hot waster has no effect on them.. If you look at the one you cut you will see there are cords in the belt to keep it from stretching. Who ever came up with that design must have been a China school of engineering grad because that is not the way to make a bandsaw wheel. Normal band saws have a slightly radiused flat face and a rubber "tire" going around the outside of the wheel. I have never seen a vee belt in a pulley used as a saw wheel. I'm happy you all survived. I think the trammel is a good idea but I think it will be hard to make and not have it tear its self apart quickly.
@WalnutsandWineberries2 жыл бұрын
Haha! We had to incorporate Ricky and provide some cinematic effect. Sorry it made you nervous. Meg was behind me during the backhoe pull (if that makes you feel better). Probably not the smartest thing I've done, but hey, we survived. I agree 100% with the design problem here, Tim. As a matter of fact, I've seen a lot of guys mount a urethane tire over the worn-out rubber on the left wheel just because of the difficulty to replace the rubber belt. That inch between the B55 and B56 belt made a big difference, but it was extremely difficult to replace even with the correct size belt. I'm exhausted, but hey, mission accomplished. The sawmill is young again!

The belts are rubber. Of course they will wear down. At least the drive belt anyway. The other tire didn't need to be changed but I did it anyway.
