Me and my wife at the cusp of upper middle class, but we both grew poor in the south Bronx in the 80s crack era. So we know what it's like to struggle. But after being successful for the better part of 20 years you do lose touch with people still in the struggle. And I'd never want to go back to the lifestyle again. So one could say we're outta touch, but we aren't so far removed that we don't understand.

American blacks have forgotten the value of family, so you can't see how the family is the unit of social and political power, not the person. I grew up without running water or steady electricity in Nigeria. When my family moved to New York, the ghetto felt like luxury living. I couldn't figure out what all the black people there were complaining about. Additionally, school (the key to a better life, as I was taught) was free. It really caused a rift between me and the community. My feeling was - you got running water, electricity and free education, what the hell are you complaining about, and why the hell are you dropping out of school. I later figured out that there were psychological reasons for it (post traumatic slave syndrome and such) but I didn't understand that at the time and it really caused a rift between me and the locals.
