------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a great video about the famous BLACK BOX or Flight Data Recorder.
So what is this black box they always seem to be looking for?
The black box is very often split into two black boxes which will help the investigators to determine what and how it led to the accident.
Each box weighs roughly twenty-pound and each has the size of a shoebox.
One of them is the CVR, cockpit voice recorder. Picture a classic tape recorder with four microphone cables attached to it. One leading into the radio control panels, to record any communication between the pilots and the air traffic controllers. One recording all conversation via the intercom within the cockpit and another one leading to the overhead panel microphone, recording ambient sounds of the cockpit such as engines and aural warnings.
When does it, and how much does it record?
It automatically starts recording if in flight and on ground when at least one engine is running and for a few minutes after the last engine was shut down. But on most planes, you have to the option to manually start CVR by pressing a button on its respective panel.
The CVR records the last two hours of crew conversation and communication with ATC. So whenever you arrive at the gate and shut down the engines you could listen to the last two hours of conversation. You can´t within in the cockpit, you would have to detach the recorder from its housing and place into a special docking station to listen to it.
Funny enough Airbus and Boeing models have a "CVR Erase" button, once you press that, all latest recordings get erased.
The other recorder or second black box is the flight data recorder.
The Flight Data Recorder, also known as ADR, the accident data recorder records data at a much larger scale.
Now the FAA regulates, that the FDR must monitor at least eighty-eight important parameters such altitude, airspeed, heading, aircraft attitude for a minimum of 25 hours.
Nowadays, FDRs made by Honeywell, for instance, can record up to 1000 in-flight parameters and characteristics such as flap position, auto-pilot modes, weather radar readouts and much much more to aid the investigators. This then allows the retrieved data from the FDR to generate a computer-animated video, reconstructing the flight before and during the crash. Which can look similar to this animation.
So the combination of the visual part by the FDR and the audio by the CVR enables a realistic picture for the investigators. So With the collected data from both recorders, the investigators determine whether an accident was caused by pilot error, by an external event (such as wind shear), or airplane technical failures.
But see more within the video ...
Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this video!
Wishing you all the best!

The reason it's at the back of the plane is simple. When is the last time you heard of a plane backing into a mountain?
@martintheiss743
@martintheiss743 5 жыл бұрын
Alaska Air once had a mountain crash and the scary part is that it is officially listed as a "controlled" crash since the NTSB said the crew was in charge and operation of the flight deck until the moment of the crash.

Yeah, Petter referred to this point in his livestream today. He understood and agreed with the sentiment, but at the same time said he hoped the comment was not directed to him specifically. I too like the way he only comments when a factual report is released, and then with a focus on interpreting the contents for people not in aviation.

Thank you for saying you don’t “review” crashes and people should wait for the full review to come out - I don’t think a lot of people understand it can take years to complete a crash investigation and just want to know immediately, and it sucks some people capitalise off of it.

I’ve always wondered why the data from the FDR and CVR isn’t instantly uploaded to something like a cloud server so that the data can be accessed immediately, without the need to go looking for a physical box which is not always able to be retrieved. Chris Keen I asked this same question once before,.I don’t recall the answer i received. It's an idea that has merit and has been getting some serious discussion recently. The main problem is the amount of data accumulation and storage you would need. At any given moment there are thousands of commercial airplanes in the air. Each one will require a continuous individual uplink to a satellite and then all that data has to go somewhere for storage. That's all going to require a very big investment to put it all in place.

The horrific part of air crash investigations is that they are typically done by professional aircraft experts and normally create much information about how systems operate. The unfortunate thing though is that a JAL lead mechanic was so horrified at the fact an unattended whistle for 7 years turned into a massive crash he just slit his belly in the traditional way a servant would amend for a mistake with his master.

Might be a specific question: I wonder how the timestamps of CVR and FDR are synced with each other and with an official time base. I guess this is really important to analyze the data and relate it to other sources like ATC, radar and eyewitnesses.

Hey Joe, any idea why this data isn't being live streamed to a ground station while the flight is going on?? Surely when you have 100-200 MBPS of bandwidth available for in-flight wifi for passengers, you can use it to stream all the flight info live.

@@flybyairplane3528 I do. The planes flying above ground can be provided with a network connection via ground-based stations, so there is no limit to the capacity or technology. As for above oceans, we just have to wait until satellites improve to the point where they can support thousands of planes.

ACARS is a system that checks the status of systems every 10 minutes for the purposes of wiring the ground support crew where they are going so they could have an opportunity if they could to get to whatever issues come up during flight. ACARS was not written for moment by moment commentary of flight for the purpose of automated transmission.

Why can't these recorders record both voice and flight data? Why do they need to be separate? Nothing wrong with having two recorders just have them do both in case one can't be found or destroyed. BTW I worked at a place that makes the steel body of these recorders years ago.

Hi Captain Joe. Why can’t they just put some video cameras on the wings and perhaps inside the cockpit and record just like the Black Box does? We can have multiple SSDs so storage shouldn’t be an issue. This would give a much better idea of what happened to the plane.

Why manufactures is still making separate black boxes for data and voice? With today's electronics capabilities it would be not so difficult to make one black box for all information and just put two of them to the plane. By the way, thanks for the videos 😀
@alerighi

They could have two different boxes that records the same data, more useful. Also in addiction they could upload the data if there is an internet connection available, an airplane has WiFi for their passengers, why not reserve a small portion of bandwidth to transmit that data, it's not all that much I think, we are talking of audio that could be easily compressed and a bunch of data, probably it's insignificant.

Flying with Aeroflot was an experience that I will never forget. I don't know exactly what happened but for some reason, the PIC throttled up just a second before touchdown. I can only assume that he dropped below glide slope. Then, once on the ground, he performed the most violent speed brake I've ever experienced. Could it be that we were heavier than the crew had anticipated? In which case: 10/10 would do again.@@flywithcaptainjoe

So awesome this video. I knew an American Airlines pilot who flew for about 35 years. He was my customer when I was selling electronics. I seem to attract pilots for some reason. I explained to him his FDR and FVR as well. I liked your explanation way more than mine. I love airplanes and your videos and some other channels here are fun for me to watch. I wish I could fly but I know I would fail the physical, so I precariously live flight through others. I am so glad you are here. I have watched everyone of your videos. I would love to meet you in person. It would be epic. Thanks again and soft landings and VFR flights a happy. Cheers.
