BLACK CAKE! 🖤 (Part 1)

I just made a 4 tiered black wedding cake this past weekend, it was mine! I used my go-to white chocolate ganache frosting, but added 2 tbsp onyx cocoa powder and a minimal amount of black food dye from Americolor. No one had stained mouths, success! The cake itself was white chocolate with strawberry filling.

I saw a video the other day where they make a dye free black frosting using black cocoa powder. They said it tastes like oreo and it looks really good. I'm gonna try to make it for my friend for her wedding because she doesn't like food dye

I remember years ago when I was a small child and there was a cake with grayish-black icing (I believe it was a Halloween related thing at school). The absolute horror of seeing the other kids with grayish-black teeth and tongues was enough for me to be put off of black and grey icing forever. Now I've seen this I feel slightly better.

I thought that was going to stain mouths as soon as you said black. I had flashbacks to my son's birthday party the year he had a Darth Vader cake. It's so cool that you can get such a rich black color without that issue. Can you imagine wedding pictures if it was the other way?

A sponge just soaks all the paint up! It’s such a small bottle, you want to make sure you get the most out of it

Thank you for considering how black food dye stains. Last time I ate something with black food dye it turned my poop blue for a week. And I'm not talking a hint of blue dye bleeding into the water, I'm talking solid this color ->🔵 but just a tad bit darker. It was actually kinda pretty but also disturbing. --- I wish this kind of exciting cake decoration was popular when my sister got married. They had a cool looking wedding, their color scheme was dark grey and pink with white accents. But then the cake was just a basic white wedding cake. It was a fine traditional cake but it clashed with the untraditional everything else and actually drew attention to itself as the odd one out. It would have been so cool to have a cake match the theme.

Wow this just makes me think about how I had a zebra print cake for my 10th birthday (animal print was very much in 😌) and the black icing tasted like ink! everybody hated it.. including my mom who bought and customized the cake 😂 but it was still a hit and everybody thought it was really cool that I worse zebra print with a zebra print cake

You can make black butter cream using black cocoa powder. No staining of mouths or anything. It also darkens as it's allowed to sit.

Interesting! Making a white buttercream black usually requires a lot of colouring. I’ve been making buttercream for many years and haven’t found a better method than this for getting black as black cakes. Do you use black cocoa? If so in my experience it has a very strange flavour!

@@tiggamac yes I did but didn't have to use to much of either. I used swiss buttercream frosting makes the black cocoa taste better. It depends on the black cocoa you use some are more bitter. I used the cocoa trader its really black and it isn't too bitter. Then I used americolor super black only 4 drops it turned dark grey let it sit out and it got darker. Then put it in a airtight container put in the refrigerator until stiffness then took about two tbsp melted it in microwave it turned super black and mixed it in the rest of cold buttercream in bowl until its creamy again. It was perfect and taste good, my kids loved it.
