Here's a couple tips from a retired decorator; freeze your cakes before stacking, the shortening/butter hardens and if you work quickly you won't get any finger prints on it. For the flowers, have a pot of melted parafin wax on hand, it doesn't have to be super hot but warm enough that it's in liquid form. Dip the cut ends of the flowers into the wax and it seals them, no liquids or chemicals from the tape get absorbed into the cake. Find yourself a wider spatula to lift your cakes, using an offset spatula doesn't give you the stability you need when lifting the weight of a cake. I absolutely love the concept of what you've done here specially with what's going on in the world today.

It was actually very pretty for all the craziness. The second was with two walmart cakes cut into squares. I washed and reused the columns. Using tons of frosting I made filigree white swirls. Covered the top with the toss bouquet and we were back in business. Creativity wins everytime. Great Job.

I wasn't quite THAT motivated, but for my wedding (we tried to be as DIY as we could and spend the money on the honeymoon instead!) I ordered a three tiered plain white cake. Did not say wedding. Just a mostly plain, three tiered cake. Cost me about $60. I used fresh culinary flowers and a topper bought on Ebay to decorate and it was lovely. That added about $30 to the total. Had I ordered the SAME cake and called it a wedding cake, it would have been $200, just for the cake. This is not necessarily true. It CAN be, but absolutely is not always. I own a professional bakery and I specialize in wedding cakes...specifically high end couture wedding cakes. I also make celebration cakes. There is no “wedding tax”. Everything is priced based on number of servings, flavor, filling, and the design. I don’t care if it’s a wedding cake or a birthday cake, the price will be the same regardless. However, I absolutely understand why people DO charge more. Weddings are stressful. There are multiple vendors to deal with. Multiple points of contact. When I have a wedding cake, I know I have to deliver and set up, which takes extra time. I need to have phone numbers for the bride and groom, the coordinator, the venue, a parent/bridesmaids, and the florist. I may need to follow up with different vendors leading up to the wedding so we can work together. If there is a problem and the cake is damaged or ruined, you’ve affected THE WEDDING DAY- which people usually aim to only have one of. There is no replacing or redoing. HIGH STRESS. On the other hand, if you order a birthday cake, I generally only have one point of contact. I may or may not need to deliver. If I mess up, it’s not the end of the world because Little Johnny has another birthday next year. That is MUCH less stressful. More work, more stress, more time= more $$$.

Maybe it is also a shopping centre with a supermarket and other catering establishments such as restaurants and bakeries. I also say when I go to this supermarket in a centre that I buy fruit, vegetable bread and so on there, while I buy the bread at the bakery next to the supermarket in the shopping centre. I wonder who could even think that the cakes are baked there. The cakes are probably off the shelf where the breads from a large bakery are. Some supermarkets also get the things pre-baked and bake them in the supermarket to the end. I have not yet seen complete cakes on the shelf, only in the freezer, the supermarkets I was in were probably too small for that. I don't even know that a whole cake can be bought in the supermarket.

For our wedding, I was quoted $600 for a naked, three tiered crumb coated cake, with no decorations. I have done my fair share of cake baking and decorating, so I wanted to ice it myself. $600 was just too pricy for me. So I did my USUAL insane crazy ADHD thing, and I made mine myself, two days before the ceremony, from scratch. Three tiers, chocolate, strawberry and vanilla bean cake, with chocolate ganache filling and itialian meringue buttercream icing. The bartender at the country club (she wasn't aware I made it) told my friend that it was the best chocolate cake she'd ever had. *proud moment* That being said.... looking back, I probably would have rather retained my sanity, and time, as opposed to the bragging rights I rightfully deserved for my cake. The ingredients alone cost me $200. This is an EXCELLENT idea. I wish they just sold baked cake bread, because that's usually pretty tasty. It's the frosting that can be gross if they use a ton of shortening instead of butter. That being said, the $450 price for her cake includes a whole lot more. Usually, with that price, there is a complimentary tasting to pick out flavors and fillings. It also usually includes a custom design service. And those thick, wrapped cardboard circles are EXPENSIVE. WEDDING OR NOT. And you are paying for their expertise and experience. It's useful to know how to do this BEFORE the cake is needed. Another reason why everything related to a wedding is so expensive, is because they are SO high stress. Brides/family are so demanding, that businesses charge in anticipation of that. There are almost always last-minute changes, add-ons, upgrades, and possibly (probaby (always)) lots of tears. Bridezillas are real, y'all. A word on transportation. I promise, you are THE most careful driver EVER, when you have a tiered cake in the car. If you think you are driving slow enough, you still aren't. You have to drive SUPER SUPER slow, with flashers on, and a sign on the back of the car, letting people know you are transporting a wedding cake, and sorry for the 2mph right turns. It's shocking how easily cakes will slide if not properly secured. Try securing something that can't be touched. LOL. If it's not tiered during transport, and in separate pieces, then you have to perform on-site assembly and touch ups. That means bringing a mobile repair kit with you. Extra dowels, decor, bags, tips, knives and icing. I promise, EVERY cake has boo boos. How well they are fixed and concealed depends of how good the cake artist is. I almost forgot! You have to anticipate the weather for venues and plan the timing, transportation, storage, assembly, even the type of icing solely based on the temperature and time of year! Even if the venue is indoors, it can melt during transport. Last, is the cutting, and this is a just preference. If the baker is cutting the cake, they know where the support boards and dowels are. The majority of people will try to cut through them. Staying until after the cutting can help you keep track of things like cake stands, transport devices or any such type of item that might be accidentally lost, tossed, or stolen. I once made a huge two tiered grooms cake. I designed and built an awesome cake stand made out of several stacked wood rounds painted a glossy piano black. It even had a wood interlocking car transport base. Soooo cool. It was expensive, and heavy, and a huge bummer. I completely forgot to ask after it and never got it back. My bad. So, yes. A $450 valued cake from two $10-$20 cakes is a nice return. But for $450, you're paying for a huge service along with your dessert.

Idk if this is true, but I've always been told that when ordering a wedding cake from a bakery, don't tell them it's for a wedding because they inflate the price. Send a pic of a cake you like and ask for it in white, or with initials on it, or whatever and it'll supposedly cost much less.
@HydnBB24 жыл бұрын
Good to know! Thx

Don't want high end if you can't afford. People put time and effort into making the cake, so as long as they produce a quality product pay the price. If not learn to do it yourself.
@NeedsMoreTriangle4 жыл бұрын
@Kelley Prather well I'm definitely not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, so I'm sorry for that. This is just something I've heard before (the "wedding tax"). And if someone required all of the things you listed, they would definitely tell you it was for a wedding. This "trick" wouldn't work for something that elaborate. I'm talking about people who may not have a lot of money and just want a pretty custom cake they can pick up and take to their small reception. Like a baker might do for a graduation cake. I've heard that if you say "wedding" no matter what the circumstances, the price will inflate. Obviously for you, this isn't the case so maybe it just isn't true 🤷🏽♀️ And high quality + time spent like you put in to your business is clearly well worth the price.
@memack19504 жыл бұрын
@@NeedsMoreTriangle I have found this to be true from my own experience when I was getting married. Actually, anytime I mentioned wedding while pricing things, the price seemed to automatically at least triple. I ended up buying an inexpensive 6in round carrot cake with white icing from Publix grocery store, dressing it up a little and using it as our wedding cake. $8 bucks, done and done versus the $300 the bakery wanted to charge me for the same size plain cake.
@tstarr83144 жыл бұрын
@Kelley Prather I think you should include stress pay as well. I made a wedding cake for a friend because she couldn't afford a professional cake. It turned out great for an amateur cake and even had people asking me if I would make a cake for them. I said no to them all. Baking that cake was probably the most stressful thing I have ever done. And my friend just left me to it, it's not like I had a picky bride contacting me all the time.

She’s hilarious. As a professional cake artist it was so cute hearing her say she hasn’t tiered a cake in years! She’s such an incredible cake artist that I was shocked to hear her say that. And it’s a baker secret that grocery stores sell extra icing, they also sell uniced cupcakes, etc - for last minute decorating. I personally can tell the cake batter is made w water and oil cause it’s too light but for others - that is a quite fix.

Beautiful job! I would never have thought a supermarket cake could look so lovely. Just a hint for you and other bakers, though...use 'flower tubes' to hold the stems, not the floral tape, and do not let the flowers unless organically grown, touch the cake...because the pesticide or even artificial colors do come off the flowers onto the cake. You can also put a holder for the flowers on top of the cake so nothing touches it. Orchids and roses are considered edible flowers, so making sure they are organic and edible flowers is the best way to go when decorating with flowers...but supermarket flowers directly on a cake is not the best idea...I love what you did with your project though. Thanks for sharing it.
