There is a renewed focus on racism and structural inequality in the process of buying and selling homes after a Black couple shared their experience of how their home increased in value by half a million dollars when they had a white person stand in as the owner of the house. NBC News’ Jake Ward met with Tenisha Tate-Austin and Paul Austin and shares their story.

I’ve understood these matters since I was a child. The way people would treat me and my white mom when in public, and the way people would treat me and my black dad when we were in public. But just to clarify, my observations are pointed to how WE were treated in particular (my mother and I vs. my father and I) because of how white I am (blue eyes and natural blonde as a child). So basically it looked like I belonged with my mom, but not with my dad. My mother was actually treated poorly on her own because of her heavy accent but that’s a different issue entirely. The most extreme example I have is when my father left me in the car for a moment to go inside the jewelry store he worked at and an older white woman tried to take me out of the car asking me, “where’s your mother?? Come with me now it’s okay now.” And of course I screamed, “PAPA! PAPA!” At the top of my lungs. My father almost hurt that woman. I was his freaking PRINCESS and she CLEARLY was trying to meet Jesus that day. So obviously, a black man with a little white girl HAD TO have meant I’d been stolen. CRINGE! It wasn’t even until after my dad died that I fully understood the severity of that incident and what it must’ve done to him. I wish I could comfort him and tell him I’m sorry for that day, and so many things he went through living as a black man in this country. He was my MUCH older father (56 when I was born) so he was born in 1929 and lived through some shh; including Korea and Vietnam (where he served in supposedly non segregated wars-but still never treated right). The stories I’ve heard of what he went through from his own “brothers in arms”… I won’t even repeat them anymore because they destroy my heart. He was my world and I miss him every single second. Anyway, but just like the people in the video just trying to conduct everyday business, my father couldn’t even be in public with his own child and not get the side eye, the looks, the comments, the poor treatment based on racial bias. It’s f’n heartbreaking. Anyway but yes, you’re right-it is the difference of how my white mother and black father were treated. I just wanted to be more specific. Thanks for your comment.

That $500K could pay for kids college, starting a business, buying a second home, or a higher commission on a real estate sale, more interest to a bank when the house gets sold at the actual fair price based on an accurate appraisal.

The entire nation doesn't lose wealth; the black family does. The person who buys it at a low value that's most likely not black gets it all when they resell it at its true resell value. Me and my husband purchased a home that we still aren't in because of the appraiser had to change appraiser now we are due to move in January 21st a month after. We had to change lenders because the lady realized my husband was black and called to verify several times that he isn't on child support and won't be on child support 😑. When my husband and I were looking to buy a new home. I had the same income, credit score, down-payment, savings, etc as my husband. When we went separately to look at homes I was quoted higher prices than my husband who is Caucasian for the same home. By the way we also live in the SF Bay Area.

It's not an isolated case. This is the biggest problem the black community has with gentrification. Black people are being essentially forced to sell their homes due to escalating property taxes at low appraised values, that are then flipped and resold at the correct price a few years later, meaning that family lost all of their wealth to the buyer.

I so agree, too many ppl are treated unfairly in too many aspects of life. I too experienced bias. I paid to take a promotional test for a city job i worked. I passed with flying colors, and was skipped over because, I was white. I was told because of a civil service law, they had to hire three persons of color to every one white. I had just closed on my home that same month, that extra pay loss hurt my family and I. Three years later I lost my home due to medical problems. Our visiting time here is short. I like fairness, and that's what I teach my grandkids. Everyone picked from the same hat, but received different gifts. The fairness was...they all got to pick.

The other scummy thing when I was growing up I always heard about white neighborhoods flipping out when black families would move into that neighborhood because white people were worried their house value would drop! I am white and I grew up in a very black neighborhood, mater of fact I was the minority. All my neighbors were black and they were great people! There is a real need for realistic change in the appraisal process of home values. Home values should not be devalued because it was occupied by a black family. The devaluing of homes is racist and ridiculously insane that the ignorant bigotry behavior is still being taught and passed down from one generation to next generation. In addition, the cycle of discrimination needs to stop. As an American, I am offended that some black and brown people are still experiencing discrimination at almost every level of some situations. Imagine how many hundreds of thousands of POC the same thing happens to, across this country every year, that never have the opportunity to tell their stories. Many of these first-time homebuyers are already barely making it, trying to pay their mortgage, HOA and other related fees, and maintain the required insurances. Not surprising. I'm in real estate and have to erase myself as often as possible to close a deal. I've had 2 white female business women fight to have my commission refunded when they saw "who" I am...I've had guns threatened, bullying and blocking tactics when just looking for homes for myself. I'm currently looking to move out of NYC but everything in my solo budget is in places littered with "trump2020" signs, "American flags" and "pickup trucks" and don't know where it's safe for me to go... I just hope in any of my previous lives as a white person... I wasn't the type to make it nearly impossible for a whole people to just... breath.

This is just sad… I hate to see what happens when my husband and I buy a house or sell a house.. my husband is a young king of color and I already know how difficult it is to buy a house I went through it before but the person I was buying from was a racist man I didn’t know until the he it was almost time to close on the house and he asked where my parents originated from my mom has Cherokee Indian, French, Italian and some others and my father if full blown Mexican so I when I told him my mom is from the us but my father was from Mexico.. 2 weeks later he decided to keep the house to “live” in… found out he sold it to someone else after I invested money to fix it up to pass inspection for my loan and after it did 3 weeks before closing on it for good he backs out at the 2 week mark and my realtor told me why and it was because his words from her mouth “I’m not selling to a mutt that don’t belong here, no pure breed in that family..” that isn’t the first time I’ve heard stuff before I’ve had an elementary teacher and high school teacher call me a spic for no reason at all.. but that was the first I have ever heard anyone say such hateful things towards me..
