1️⃣ What is Black Fungus Infection/Mucormycosis❓
Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus or zygomycosis is a rare but dangerous fungal infection.
It is caused by a group of mould called "mucormycetes", which are present in the air and cause complications when an ill patient inhales these, which then spreads into the sinus cavities, lungs and chest cavities.
2️⃣ Why Black Fungus Infection is seen in Covid-19 Patients❓
According to Dr. Rahil Chaudhary, Black Fungus is also known as Mucormycosis is a rare yet “opportunistic infection” - it latches on to people who are battling illnesses or are on medications that lower the body’s ability to fight infections.
Patients with COVID-19 have weak immunity and a large number of them are put on steroids in order to control a hyperimmune response, thus making them susceptible to other fungal infections such as mucormycosis, say Dr Chaudhary.
The majority of mucormycosis infections have been seen in COVID-19 patients with diabetes or those with underlying and undetected high blood sugar. Diabetes lowers the body's immune defenses, coronavirus exacerbates it, and then steroids which help fight Covid-19 act like fuel to the fire.
India’s poor air quality and excessive dust in cities make it easier for the fungi to thrive.
3️⃣ Who is more likely to get infected❓
✦ It can be life-threatening in diabetic or severely immunocompromised individuals, such as cancer patients or people with HIV/AIDS.
✦ People who undergone life-saving treatments like a heart or kidney transplantation.
✦ Critically ill Covid-19 Patients.
4️⃣ How do you recognize signs of infection❓
Patients suffering from the fungal infection typically have symptoms of stuffy and bleeding nose; local pain on the cheek bone, one-sided facial pain, numbness or swelling. There could be black patches of skin around the nose.
There could be swelling and pain in the eye, drooping of eyelids, blurred and finally complete loss of vision.

Sir my father diabetic age 49 was covid +ve 3weeks month back he was on deflazacort 6mg twice for two weeks and then 12mg twice for 5 days no oxygen was required and his diabetes is in control his all situations are normal slight redness in eye and no other symptoms could it be black fungus and does he lies in the high risk category for this fungus.
