We've all felt betrayed. Whether in love or in a different part of our lives, everyone will have experienced these feelings. That's why it is such a powerful song. I am very fortunate that I have not experienced betrayal in a romantic relationship, but when I first heard this song I cried for a couple of hours. I am not one who cries but this song hit me in a way only one or two other songs have. It's the questions, right? What do they have that I don't? What did I do wrong? You PROMISED! WHY? Then the questioning of yourself, "why do I keep asking why when the answers just break my heart more?" And even when we get some of those answers... "But...WHY?!?" It's a series of questions that are natural to ask and so devastating to get the answers to. Divorcing parents, friends telling others what you told them in confidence, being fired from a job you have loved and been dedicated to, even the death of a loved one; all of these and more can leave us feeling utterly betrayed.
