Taylor is nothing if not a poet. She definitely has bars. Even her more "generic" songs are cleverly constructed, if you pay attention to the lyrics and how the songs are put together. Love that you reacted to this album and so happy to see how much you enjoyed it. This album saved me during the summer of 2000. edit: good choices. The Lakes is one of my favorite Taylor songs.

the song "last great american dynasty" is actually a real story!!! she wrote it about the woman who owned "holiday house" (a house in watch hill, Rhode island) her name was rebekah harkness and after her husband died she threw a lot of partys and her neighbours, who were either familys or old rich men (the average cost of a house there is 2,3 million right now), felt disturbed. after taylor bought the house in 2013 for almost 18 million she was in her early-mid 20s and threw a lot of partys with famous people. a few years later the kim/snake thing happened and she was known as the annoying girl that always plays the victim. as we know rebekah was also described as mad and crazy. taylor related to that so she wrote a song :)

What’s so crazy about Folklore and Evermore is that they were completely unplanned albums. She was supposed to be touring that year but COVID happened. She made folklore in about 3-4 months then 5 months later she dropped Evermore both complete surprise drops with no warning. Folklore got her, her 3rd album of the year win. Albums that would have never happened without COVID. Seven is a top 5 song of her whole discography for me. It about child like innocence and naivity. A time where you could do whatever you want as a child with no worries and being free
@csmith63

I think Folklore being album of the year was a stretch--and an acknowledgment almost of "oopsie, so sorry about that whole trashing your Reputation thing," which is going to go down as a top 5 DISCOGRAPHY entry! That said, I'm betting we would've gotten tour/break up sooner without the pandemic. Instead, she wrote the break up songs first this time!

well yes, Taylor had lost sumn at that time and that's what my tears ricochet was abt. so basically, the record label that handled Taylor betrayed her and sold her songs to Scooter Braun. when she won the Artist of the Decade award, she wanted to perform a medley of her songs from when she started up to her latest at that time which was Lover (2019). but then the record label gave her choices, either scrap the plan to rerecord her stolen albums to make it her own in order to perform her songs, or sign a contract with the label again, and each time she released an album she would own one of her stolen album. she decided to rerecord her stolen albums, now known as taylor's versions.

The worst thing about the sale of her songs is that her masters were sold behind her back and, even though she already vocalized wanting to purchase them so she could own her life's work, she wasn't given an option. And the person who sold them without her getting any say in the matter was like a second father to her, so it was a massive betrayal that she went through. On top of that, they were sold TO Scooter Braun, who worked closely with K*nye (and honestly traumatized her in 2009 and tried to ruin her life in 2016 with Kim K). Her first 6 albums, starting from when she was just a little teenager, stolen ("hear my stolen lullabies" in my tears ricochet). And that's what ultimately led her to doing the Taylor's Versions project, so she can take back ownership of her work, album by album 🥹🫶

Many of these songs have gorgeous videos that she directed that you’ll want to check out at some point. They add so much to the song. There is also a short interview before each song on Folklore that you can watch. It’s her with Jack and/or Aaron discussing the meaning behind the lyrics. For example, who the heck is Rebekah? Turns out she’s real and Taylor bought her house in Rhode Island after it sat empty for 50 years. They’re called the Long Pond Studio sessions. Check those out too! You’ll become an even bigger fan!

Cardigan, Betty and August are the same story from three views. James was with Betty but he leaves her for a summer fling with Augustine. Cardigan is Betty looking back on the whole situation years later. Betty is James coming back to Betty at the end of the summer. August is Augustine remembering her summer with James. Hopefully that makes sense? ALSO the last great american dynasty is the history of the people who were in the rhode island house she now owns. She bought holiday house and the song is about the history of Rebekah, the woman who lived there before her.

folklore and her other album evermore are mostly storytelling based, she was bored and wrote them during the pandemic and they both came out within a year because she had sooo much time. most are not actually about her! the last great american dynasty is about the previous owner of her rhode island house, yes her name is actually spelled like that lmaoo. cardigan, august, and betty are inspired by a made up teenage love triangle, cardigan from the perspective of betty, august from the perspective of augustine, and betty from the perspective of james. you can find more information about that other places, if you listen to those songs again you’ll find parallels between them. seven is about a little boy who grew up with an abusive father i’m pretty sure illicit affairs is based off a tv show couple but i forgot which show invisible string is about her it was about her boyfriend at the time Joe Alwyn, more songs about her would be peace (her being worried that her fame is too much and she’ll never be able to bring peace to the people in her normal life), mirrorball is pretty self explanatory and i also think the 1 is about herself. epiphany is about the idea of living in chaos so she wrote about her grandfather in WW2 and the selfless nurses who worked during covid. this is me trying is about battling addiction. the best thing about these songs is how she uses figurative language and metaphors so anyone can interpret them however they want and apply the lyrics to their own life. my tears ricochet for example how she uses the example of a breakup or extreme betrayal but the deeper meaning is so much more specific to her. love your reactions and can’t wait for the next!

I love this reaction video! Seeing you enjoy this beautiful music for the first time is a joy to watch. And love the acknowledgement of her vocal ability as well, we all know she has bars for days but very rarely do her vocals get some love! If you weren’t already told by 50 million Swift fans by now (I apologize for wasting your time if you were!) The spelling of Rebekah in The Last Great American Dynasty is spelled that way because the song is about Rebekah Harkness, the woman whose home she bought in Rhode Island. And all the storytelling about Rebekah is true- the marriage to the standard oil heir, his untimely death, filling the pool with champagne, the stealing of the neighbor’s dog and dyeing it key lime green, the card games with Salvador Dali, her love of the ballet (at least from what I’ve been able to research about Rebekah Harkness). But that’s why it’s spelled that way 😊 Taylor says in “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions” that she’s been wanting to write a song about Rebekah Harkness since 2013. She was looking at the house and the realtor told her about the home’s history and prior owners and she was so fascinated by the story she’d been waiting years to find the right track to write the song about Rebekah. And YES she was going through it with My Tears Ricochet; it’s about the sale of her masters by Scott Borchetta (the man who created her old label and who she trusted implicitly) to Scooter Braun (not someone she is a fan of). She offered to buy the masters for her first 7 albums herself and instead they were sold to (or stolen by) Scooter Braun. This inspired her idea for the rerecording of the seven albums that were sold, (the Taylor’s Version project). Since she couldn’t buy her own music she wrote, she re-recorded it so that she could finally own her music. “This is Me Trying” came from her ruminating during lockdown about people living with addiction or mental health issues and how they try every single day but no one knows. No one knows that every day is a struggle for that person. “Epiphany” is about both her grandfather’s service in WWII at Guadalcanal and about the healthcare workers battling the pandemic in the second verse. Also Cardigan, August, and Betty are a trilogy about a love triangle. 😊 Sorry if you already knew all of that! It’s so wonderful to watch people listen to Taylor’s music for the first time and watching you listen to and discover this album for the first time is a pleasure to watch ❤ If you haven’t already seen it, I’d recommend watching “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions” on Disney+. Would love to see your reaction to that!

Mirror ball is such an underrated song! It’s beautiful and I love Seven too! I love how you not only appreciate the music but also her lyricism. I love Seven the song about a child that is running away from an abusive home and her trying to care for her friend.😢 I love it so much. Thank you for doing these reactions her songwriting is next to none ❤

I love seeing people react to taylor swift. It’ll always be my favorite thing because i know i’m not the only one covering my mouth and screaming into my hands. And just how people realize how talented she is. Especially people who didn’t think in their Wildest Dreams (haha get it?) that they’d listen to her. It is such an enamoring moment.

As a New England native, The song Great American Dynasty is based on her home in RI. The story of this woman was a socialite named Rebekah Harkness who allegedly stole the neighbors dog (as told by the town’s historian) lived in and owned the house in 1948. Taylor’s song reflects the history. Cool song.

I think one of the best comparisons I often hear (which I believe this artist has said himself, as well) is when people say she is the millennial Paul McCartney. Because I always think of Paul McCartney as someone who writes both melodies and lyrics that seem SO simple that it's almost like... "Ok.. so what? Where's the genius there? Anyone could have written that!" But of course, the opposite is true. It's actually a real gift to make things so plain and true.

My tears ricochet is famously about the fight for creative and monetary control over her catalogue. Her fans were front and center in that fight bc we were what made it possible. No one had ever been able to get millions of people to stand by an artist for control of their catalog. Shes a hero to a lot of us for that reason.

“August” - is james summer fling and her pov of the whole thing and how she really thought her and james had something special. “betty” - is james pov and it’s a letter to betty saying how his summer fling meant nothing to him and he still loves her and realises his mistakes. “Cardigan” - is bettys pov of everything.

Excellent album. I listened to it on loop for weeks after it was released. And Rebekah is the correct spelling of the name as it's the telling of the story of Rebekah "Betty" Harkness, a composer, socialite, etc., who was the previous owner of the mansion Taylor purchased in Rhode Island.

Cardigan,August and Betty are a love triangle , Inez is August cause like when in “August” it says “But I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time 'Cause it was never mine”, Cardigan is Betty cause she is heartbroken and hurt after James wrongs her, and then Betty is James apologizing to Betty and he also refers to her wearing her Cardigan. And my tears ricochet is about her old manager Scott Borchetta selling her music to scooter braun.

Actually, I originally thought Inez was August, but in the long pond sessions, she refers to her as Augustine. So Inez is just the girl who is a bit of a gossiper.

Seeing you chefs kiss to epiphany… my eyes welled up too brother. Epiphany is super meaningful to me because I worked on the front lines as an RN through 2020 and when Covid finally started fading, I was diagnosed with with stage 4 cancer (I’m happy I’m at 3 years and going strong). A lot of swifties say epiphany is their least favorite song but… if you know, you know.

In reference to painting the dog keylime green… this is a true story about the Standard Oil family . This really happened. The house was empty for 50 years and Taylor ended up purchasing the property several years back . Here home she lives on the Connecticut coast.

Bro you need to react to her album 1989 (Taylor's version deluxe - with vault tracks). Literally has some of her biggest hits but also when you listen to the lyrics it hits different being older now.

the story in cardigan /august / betty is sooooooo good, it's like a book fr. it's about three teenagers: betty, james and augustine. cardigan is sung by betty, august is sung by augustine and betty is sung by james. james cheats on betty with augustine for the summer, "just a summer thing" he sings in the betty song, but augustine thinks it's true love in the august song, and in cardigan, betty sings that she knows james would come back to her because he may have a summer fling with augustine, but BETTY is the one he loves and will crawl back to. MAN, these three songs are so good and interconnected. there's also theories that other songs such as illicit affairs are also connected to the "folklore love triangle", that illicit affairs is later on, that even after crawling back to betty after the summer, james cheats on her again in secret, going back to augustine for clandestine meetings in parking lots, but he doesn't treat either woman with respect. shivers i tell you, shivers! where's the movie taytay?
