also seven is about Taylor growing up in Pennsylvania with a friend (whose name she can't remember because its been so long) and about how this friend dealt with an abusive father ("your dad is always mad/and then you won't have to cry or hide in the closet") It's a song about childhood innocence and how Taylor's friend lost it at seven years old. It's honestly so heartbreaking.

Cardigan and My Tears Ricochet are simply the most beautiful songs ever. They're literally masterpieces. It's a story that you get involved into both of the perfectly, sad, beautiful and tragic lyrics and the addicting instrumentals/arrangements. And the normal effect of them is to you just to get extremely intrigued by all of that handsome sadness, and one of two options: you'll cry your soul out, or you gonna get on your knees and pray to these Gods in a song disguise.

@@ivysepiphanies a lot of reactions do because there isn’t really much to add. It’s a great track to analyse and think about, but it’s hard to dissect on a first listen while you have the rest of the album which is a lot denser and nicer to listen to, while epiphany kinda just has a vibe that its almost an interlude track leading into betty. Also missing the grandfather/COVID connection does remove a lot of the track’s power, and it being so far after the latter’s biggest moments kinda loses the impact.

‘The Bon Iver guy…’ 😂 If you haven’t already, listen to the album, ‘For Emma, Forever Ago.’ Then you’ll understand why he is such an inspiration to Taylor, and so many others. It has some similarities and similar feels to Folklore, but it’s also a complimentary opposite in that the lyrics are deliberately vague in paces, so they evoke general feeling, rather than pulling your focus towards specific experiences. It’s a masterpiece, as is Folklore, and I’m sure any Folklore fan will be enchanted to experience it.

I've always seen Peace as a song describing a person with mental health problems that is trying to say like "I can be a lot, but I will do my best". Especially when she says "would it be enough if I could never give you peace?"; when you have depression you always think about giving people "peace" and going away, so it really resonated with me in that sense. Like looking at the people you love and saying "is it enough if I don't want to go? If I don't WANT to give you peace" I don't know, as someone who has this type of problem, blaming myself is something I always do and I cried a lot listening and feeling this song

Illicit Affairs is honestly one of the best songs on the album and in her discography as a whole. In my eyes, I’ve always seen it as a sort of “this is what happens in secret relationships” instead of it being about cheating on a partner. Taylor captures the magic of the thrill you feel having to hide your love for the other person, and that “dwindling mercurial high” is likely the words “I love you” since they are “a drug that only works the first few hundred times.” Illicit affairs and clandestine meetings mean the same thing, it’s about meeting up in secret behind everyone else, and I’ve always found the song to kind of be very close to my heart for some reason. Like it hits home in no way any other songs on the album (save for 2 others: mirrorball and this is me trying) really do

"How does she write this about other people?" Exactly. How does she have this connection, this ability to paint, as you say, about these experiences like she's lived it all already? It's just incredible. That's why this album should rank amongst the all-time greats.

In terms of LWYMMD, reputation as a whole is a GIGANTIC difference and makes the song sound much better especially when you take it into consideration conceptually. How the album is simultaneously a defense mechanism and battle cry, and an ode to finding real connections and true love among chaos and hiding. The album goes from abrasive electropop to pure romantic softness.

Peace is my favorite song. You hit the nail on the head with your interpretation. My favorite line "and you know that I'd swing with you for the fences, sit with you in the trenches. Give you my wild, give you a child. Give you the silence that only comes when two people understand each other." Like that's truly what love is. Giving each other everything you have in the darkest of moments and also in the lightest. Choosing each other regardless of what comes your way. It's devastating to know that the person she felt this deeply for is no longer in her life. I hope she is doing okay.

Epiphany is one of the most heart wrenching songs I’ve heard in a LONG time. The way she compared the trauma her grandfather in WW2 went through with nurses and doctors during the pandemic is honestly true though. Doctors only were able to get minutes of sleep sometimes during the pandemic. The amount of people they would see dying, people they might’ve known, and having to literally gather bodies upon bodies and just put them in masses to the mortuary and all that. It’s scary. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a huge upsurge in PTSD cases within the medical field. It was very traumatic and is still traumatic. The ending sounding like a heart monitor as well…just sad as fuck “Just to make sense of what you’ve seen”.

Yeah, I read an interview with an old nurse taking about how she could see a lot of the young doctors that started their careers with the pandemic losing their empathy, just cutting off their emotions like soldiers do when they learn not to get attached to people in war. Very sad.
