There was also Sergeant 1st class Timothy Griz Martin, the delta operator who got blown in half and he actually survived longer in real life than he did in the movie. In the movie he dies after telling McKnight that he wants his girls to know he's ok, maybe 5 minutes. In reality he was taken back to base and he held on to life for hours. I forget who it was but one of the medical personnel told Martin he wouldn't live much longer, and he was probably emotionally saying it. Martin simply gave him a thumbs up to ease the man, he already knew he was gonna die. Still makes me teary eyed thinking about it. I hope that man rests in peace for all eternity, what a horrific wound but he was still so gracious and humble. What men these soldiers were, I'll never be half the man they were and I can admit that. Never met Mr. Martin but I love him as a brother for his sacrifice no matter what.

If you play it at slow speed it appears that he was hit just once in the left shoulder. I think the editing makes it look like he was hit multiple times. The 5.56 round wasn’t really designed to kill, but more likely to incapacitate a soldier. The idea being that a squad would become battle ineffective because they would have to carry a wounded soldier out of the fight.

They were on a humanitarian issue in somalia. The warlords didn't like that. Army went in there to do a huge OP in hopes that snatching the top dogs will end the suffering but they somalis were able to rally the city.

Not exactly. Aidid operated a radio station which was putting out information the UN forces were going door to door and forcing conversion to Christianity at gun point. It could be believed because they were doing some armed searches for particular warlords and other leaders. What was the UN doing there? There was a civil war in Somalia, where starvation was being used as a military tactic against the group that didn't have access to ports. When the 1980's Live Aid and every other fund raising effort failed to deliver food to the starving people, the UN forces were brought in to do so.
