I took my young sons on the 1880 train that ran from Hill City to Keystone sometime in the 1980's. It was a hot July day and on the big hill, the engine began wheel slip to the point that we were stalled. We were in an open gondola car directly behind the engine and in front of the other covered passenger cars. The train stopped, the conductor came to each car as asked if we would exit the train to lighten the load. We were all told to stay well back from the cars while the engine crested the summit of the hill. We re-boarded and then continued the trip. What a great experience and something the boys still talk about. For the one-way trips, they had built a wye so that the engine could turn around. We rode this train many times over the years. What a great time.

@@travelingtom923 My family and I went to South Dakota in 2009. We were lucky to go on the Black Hills Central Railroad. Well, before that we went horseback riding, because we had to wait a few hours for the train to get back at the station in Keystone. When I first saw that 2-6-6-2T #110 Mallet steam locomotive pulling into the station I was amazed at how big it was for a logging locomotive. I was very young at the time. We live in Iowa.

I rode this train on August 16, 2017, just prior to the solar eclipse on the 20th. The climb out of Hill City is slow and steady. There are a number of things to visit in Hill City, the CCC museum, the SD RR Museum, and the Museum@Black Hills Institute (natural history). Be sure and DO NOT ride the first run of the day, it is a diesel locomotive. the Steam engine is still warming up. The second run and after is steam. The locomotive was originally built as an oil burner, and is run on used motor oil most of the time. The large bulges on it are the fuel tanks. Great ride and anyone visiting the area should ride it.

Rode this train a few years back. Ironically it is the only train I've ever been on so far. To be completely honest, before boarding #110, I was nervous as I never knew what it would be like, but I was very relieved to find that the ride was really quite smooth. The scenery was very stunning from the rails, seeing aging telephone poles by the tracks, staring at the surrounding countryside, hearing that classic whistle and listening to #110 chuffing as she worked the steep grades. With all of that, the folks on board also made us feel comfortable. They fed my love for history as they talked to us about the history of the engine, the BHC, looking for landmarks such as the stone watchtower, the old tungsten mine, and others; it was a very pleasurable and memorable experience and I'd gladly do it all again if I can ever get the chance. Thanks for a wonderful video, it gave me some chills hearing that whistle again.

I rode that train in the summer of 2007 and their #104, a 2-6-2T pulled my train. On the steep grade when the whole train was fully stretched and no slack was in the couplers, there were several times when it was easy to feel the individual piston thrusts of the engine when it was working hard up the grade. Truly a seat of the pants feeling that I never expected being able to experience. I don't think I knew then that it was a 6% grade, but I was very impressed by the ability of that engine to walk up that grade with the train.

I've seen a lot of videos of 4014 "Big Boy" this summer, fresh off it's restoration and looking brand new. By comparison, one can tell this locomotive has been hard at work and pulling it's weight. It's good to see a steam locomotive as they look when being operated regularly.
@NathanielHatley5 жыл бұрын
From the few documentaries I've seen, back when these locomotives were the primary means of transportation they were kept in much better shape (especially the passenger locomotives). It was one of the ways the railway could show off how much they cared about their line (show their pride / spirit). It takes a huge amount of work keeping the locomotives looking like new. I'm not surprised to see this one showing some neglect, I can't imagine the individuals that work with it have much time or resources to invest into keeping it in better condition.
@silentotto50995 жыл бұрын
@@NathanielHatley I don't really see purely cosmetic signs of use as neglect. For example, the heat induced rust one can see at the front of the firebox or the surface rust on the drive members. Is that really neglect, or just what happens when these locomotives are operated regularly? I don't know much about the golden age of the rail-roads, so I can't speak to how they were maintained at that time. You might be right that such things would have been quickly rectified at a time when rail-roads had huge maintenance staffs. But, it reminds me bit of a story I once heard concerning a B-25. Someone was looking at one sitting on the ground and noticed that there were oil drips coming from the engines. He asked the crew if that indicated a problem. The crew member replied... "Naw... We don't worry when they drip oil. We only worry when they stop dripping oil." For an operational B-25, dripping some oil was normal and some oil around the engine nacelle was a sign that the plane was being flown regularly.

How can such an ungainly looking engine look so beautiful? Where is the tender? I csn see the saddle tanks for water, but fuel?
@j.christopherlindsey89335 жыл бұрын
It's a logging locomotive, so short distance. Water in the saddle and "fuel" in the small box behind the cab would be sufficient. A steam locomotive consumes more water than they do fuel to heat the water. And I agree; she's a gorgeous locomotive. There's something about Mallets that really strikes me as impressive creations.
