It’s horrible he passed away penniless. I was a horse show groom. Grooms aren’t treated very well materially or emotionally. There’s a Secretariat FB page who did a lot of auctions and donations and finally got Eddie a headstone for his grave. He didn’t have one. I think it’s very sweet of them to do that. I joined that FB page after they did it. They do other things for others who aren’t as well to do who had a lot to do with Big Red. RIP Eddie ! I know you’re taking care of Big Red again. God Bless.

I've just learned that Mr. Sweat - a genius, a gentleman, and someone who should be considered one of America's heroes - died penniless. This is unreal. I can't stop crying. How is it possible that so may people can be blind but not colour-blind? Horserider, if I hadn't found this beautiful tribute, I'd probably either have to be sedated or I'd be out shouting in the streets. Thank you for a wonderful celebration of a man who's thirty-one lengths ahead of the rest of us. Bless you.

I know that Big Red was his baby. That horse really loved him. Like a child he held on to his jacket watching his face. So sad there are not more like this man, but just like the horse, he was one of a kind. I'm happy to know Secretariat had him for the time they spent together. Anyone who loves animals as he did shows how much good is in their heart. He did such a great job, others take note. RIP Good Man.

Secretariat temperament and inner joy shows what the power of love really does. Eddie was like the horse's "human mother". That Eddie died poor is just one more testament to the greed of many Americans with money. They have no idea what poverty is like and won't share unless forced. FDR, Eisenhower, Johnson and Clinton knew this. I'm so glad Eddie is being remembered for the beautiful man he was.

Mr. Sweat wasn't just 'special', he was a benchmark. He set a 24 "carrot' example of what every horseman/woman should strive to be. Wealthy in experience and good will, extraordinarily gifted, kind and generous, patient and faithful. His Life Was Blessed and He Blessed All of U.S.

A horse and an unlikely team that will never be matched. No animal wins the Triple Crown without a great team caring for him. Remember Secretariat went to the loser of the coin toss. The trainer came out of retirement because his son couldn't take the job. And The team around the horse loved him Eddie understood that horse. And the greatest thing about the team was they let Secretariat run his race.

I just watched this video for the first time and I'm happy to see that this great horse handler is not forgotten. He was a huge part of Secretariat's success and Ron Turcotte called him a "Horse Whisperer" in a french-Canadian documentary. Let's not forget that he handled many other great horses, Riva Ridge and Angle Light to mention a couple more. R.I.P Eddie...

This man was integral to the success of a horse. He deserves all accolades. He doesn't need our love. He had Secretariat's. What we need is to acknowledge a man who loved animals. There is shame that he did not go to Claiborne with that horse. Why not? The two were so connected? And he died financially destitute, like he had nothing to do with the temperament of the horse. Eddie, you did your job well, but, better, you were full of the Grace that those who didn't pay you well, were not.
@brewster27966 жыл бұрын
He was offered the position at Claiborne but politely declined. There are different ideas about why, but maybe it was loyalty to Lucien Lauren, or maybe because he didn’t want to move his family.
@sergeantmasson36692 жыл бұрын
1Onionpeeler, Eddie was paid very well. His later years health drained most all of his finances. His health problems are why he wasn't able to go to Claiborne Farm to visit Secretariat.

Charlie and Eddie are the reason why Secretariat was so great. You know, black jockie's were some of the best. It's sad that they were eliminated from the game. The black jockie had a special niche with throughbred racing, they brought more flare and style to the game that you don't see with other jockie's.
@stevek88294 жыл бұрын
They were never "eliminated from the game." Where did that BS come from?
@mariabykofsky45024 жыл бұрын
@@stevek8829 That happened very long ago. In the 1800's horse Jockies were black and as horse racing became more popular, the Black jockies were making excellent money....The owners were white, in time white young men came to realize the money in racing, the owners then hired whites instead of blacks for a jockey position.....
