I absolutely agree and their beautiful relationship bring tears to my eyes every time. Eddie was an experience horseman. He brought knowledge about these sentinel creatures to his job as Groom. They both were blessed to have each other. I read somewhere that Mr. Sweat spoke Geeche, that Secretariat responded to him and that Mr. Sweat was the only one the could handle Secretariat. Everyone else was about the financial gain. For Mr. Sweat the most important thing we do for those we love and that is be a presence in their lives. He spent a lot of time with our beloved Secretariat. He often read to him. Everyone else was about financial gain. I understand the Owner father had left his Estate with a tax debt. So Secretariat was syndicated and could know longer race as part of the agreement. and just look at how many times he covered a mare six hundred and something . It was all about the money.Mr. Sweat and Secretariat loved each other dearly. I can't help but feel that had he gone with Secretariat the illness that claimed his Life Would not have happened

Vicki Hodges, a few people were involved in Secretariat's success. His owner, Penny, vowed to do everything possible for him. Eddie Sweat, however, was devoted to Secretariat since the moment he was born. Eddie was there for his best buddy, Secretariat, 24/7/365 until later when Eddie battled Leukemia that took his life. Eddie was very poor when he died because of the disease treatments. Close friends and the Jockey association paid for his funeral. It hit Eddie hard when Secretariat died.

I often wonder if, at least in the 20th century, the greatest horses were the ones who were also cared for without any cruelty. I also wonder if they understood better which feed component had desired results and which poor results and could adjust the diet to each horse’s needs accordingly. I was shocked at reading Saving Baby to find that some “trainers “ do to their race horses things that shouldn’t even be done to a pet pony.

Grooms in ALL forms of horse sporting events be it racing or showing are the most unappreciated and under paid people in the business. After what Secretariat achieved, as well as Riva Ridge who probably would have won the Triple Crown had the track been dry at Pimlico, Eddie should have been given a HUGE reward that would have had him set for the rest of his life. As it was, even after all those incredible achievements, he nor his family could afford a headstone on his grave. That’s despicable ! Sweat was offered a job at Claiborne Farms when Secretariat went to stud there, but turned it down. I'm not sure why. Maybe he wanted to stick with taking care of horses who were racing---a bit more excitement. Sweat, sadly, died penniless, according to a story I read. Grooms, being low on the horse-racing business ladder, of course don't get the respect they deserve. Sweat, by all accounts, was outstanding at what he did.

Once when I was working for Joe Aqilino (rip) a horse that I had just started taking care of saw me walk into the barn and started nickering. The assistant trainer asked me if I had been giving him candy. (Peppermints) . I told him no, I never did that. My friend said that horse was happy to see me. That horse had 16 straight starts before I got him without having finished in the top four . First time I ran him he finished second at 54-1 odds . Second time he won paying 16$ next time second again and got claimed .

I read a couple of articles about Eddie. Seems he died broke and the family couldn't pay for the funeral. The Jockey Club Foundation paid for it. However what I find appalling that neither Roger or Penny Chenery went to the funeral or sent one flower. Bill Nack who got so much access to Secretariat through his friendship with Eddie did not attend his funeral, send flowers or write a article. It says alot of how some people are invaluable and then expendable.

Just try to imagine the joy of seeing two of your charges win 5 of the 6 Triple Crown races in two consecutive years. The only sad part was that the two people who admired him and depended on his skill and devotion the most, Mr. & Mrs. Chenery, didn't live long enough to share it with him.
@justseekingtruth39982 жыл бұрын
Penny died many years after Eddie. She simply didn't share with him as she should have. That's the really sad part. That man kept Secretariat with a cool head and a kind spirit. He could have been a wild mean horse being that he was so full of himself but you see him deferring to Eddie when Eddie was there, out if respect and love for Eddie. Eddie was his true owner, though not legally. Eddie was his world. The only time Big Red was without Eddie was when he was on the track. Secretariat was secure because of Eddie's impeccable care and devotion. I shudder to think what he could have been like without it, knowing how much I tensity that horse had flowing through him due to the size of his heart. He so easily could have become irascible and discontent. So kudos to you Mr. Sweat. I'm glad you're with our boy now and hope you get to ride him too! 💜💜💜

How was Secretariat's time at the Claiborne Farm? I don't think he got the kind of love at the Claiborne like he got from his time with Eddy.
