Shot entirely on location in Hollywood in 1984, this feature documentary explores the role of black actors, black directors and the black audience in American movies. Remember the early 80s: hip hop had just been born, break dancing filled clubs and streets and Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor were the only two black stars making it. In an action-packed showcase of clips and interviews, Diahnne Abbott, Rosalind Cash and Alfre Woodard talk about negative stereotyping. Jim Brown, Vonetta McGee and D'Urville Martin come up with alternative solutions to the one-way-street that was "blaxploitation" and discuss new ways of advancing an independent black cinema. There is a rare interview with Lorenzo Tucker, the Black Valentino, about his career with Oscar Micheaux. Joel Fluellen and Vincent Tubbs tell memorable stories of what life was like for the few blacks working in Hollywood in the 50s and 60s (including Dorothy Dandridge). There is a marvelous speech by Sidney Poitier on accepting the Black Hall of Fame "Oscar". Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION is panned. Grandmaster Flash and his "Message" is the theme tune and the writer Oscar Williams holds the whole show together with his advice to the creative outsider.

It’s insane how poised these actors/actresses are. I guess I believed in the hype of “oh that was back then” but it seems like nothing really changed as far as the conversations being had. Fast forward to 2021 and these roles and stereotypes are still being perpetuated. Not only in film now but in music as well. Actually, if you let me tell it the music business is actually producing more of these types. It’s amazing how a character can be created..put on tv and or in music videos with a completely made up persona and if you give it enough time you’ll see actual people in real life acting like those created people or archetypes. It’s like it goes from fiction -> reality. Instead of art imitating life...it’s the opposite now..

Absolutely, there is a niche waiting to be exploited by Blacks for Blacks by demonstrating 100% Black Self Respect (BSR) with Constructive Black Media (CBM), a Black Owned Film Industry (BOFI) that can win The Black Award (TBA) for Zero Black Deformation (ZBD). The "Black Story" should also look into the future with Black Sci-Fi to a time where we have attained and maintained true Black Soveriengty and self determination.

Demetrius Dion - Thanks for your great comment that reminds me of a statement I heard Dr Amos Wilson state in a lecture, that the billions that Blacks earn and spend comes the trillions in value that Blacks generate. Further, Dr Amos Wilson states that Blacks in the USA represent one of the riches nations on Earth if Blacks operated as a nation. Just imagine if Blacks owned the business that produced everything that Blacks consumed.

@@JusticeSoldier-cm1bz Yet, you have to fight with blacks to support their own. They would rather buy from the white man than support their own people. You cannot find no other ethnicity that does this.
@JusticeSoldier-cm1bz
@JusticeSoldier-cm1bz 4 жыл бұрын
Wilbur Mcbride - You cannot find no other ethnicity that have gone around the entire World and have mistreated every other group, except for people who classify themselves as White. You cannot find no other ethnic group that have been mistreated by people who classify themselves as White in the SAME way as people who are classified as Black have been mistreated by people who classify themselves as White. Organisms who have been abused and mistreated tend to abuse themselves or others like themselves. This touches on the work of Psychologist B. F. Skinner. The Narcissistic Psychopathic mistreatment by people who classify themselves as Whites towards people that Whites have classified as Black, has RESULTED in people who are classified as Black mistreating themselves or other people classsified as Black. The above outlines the following: The Narcissist/Psychopath blames the victim and tries to get the victim to blame themselves or other victims of the Narcissist/Psychopath. This way The Narcissist/Psychopath remains free to continue mistreament. I write The Narcissist/Psychopath as narcissism and psychopathy are psychiatric disorders that are comorbid i.e coexisting; with one of the overriding traits being lack of conscience and consequence lack of empathy. Fundamentally, The Narcissist/Pscyhopath behaves narcissistically and psychopathically simply because The Narcissist/Psychopath IS a Narcissist/Psychopath. The above establishes the causal relation that established "Black on Black violence/crime". The proof being that Africans (Blacks), for example The Dogon and The Maasai, who have NOT been through the hands of The Narcissist/Psychopaths who classifiy themselves as White, DO NOT exhibit "Black on Black violence/crime". People who classify themselves as White have built a System of Domination(parasitic survival) that is BUILT upon violence towards people classified as Black by people who classifiy themselves as White. In order for people who classify themselves as White to MAINTAIN their System of Domination (parasitic survival), it is essential for people who are classified as Black to be subjected to violence, EVEN IF BY OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE CLASSIFIED AS BLACK. Again, the work of psychologist B. F. Skinner demonstrates that a living organism that is mistreated will lash out towards a living organism within immediate vicinity or close enough proximity, WHEN the organism cannot directly attack the originator of the mistreatment. This is called "displaced agression". There are various ways people who are classified as Black are mistreated individually and collectively by people who classify themselves as White, indirectly and directly using methods that are similar to "The Skinner Box" and opperant conditioning as described by psychologist B.F. Skinner. Black on Black violence/crime occurs within the context of Blacks having been and still being under White domination(parasitic survival), as it is a neccesity for maintaining White Domination(parasitic survival) by people who classify themselves as White. Revolutionary Black Psychologist, Dr Amos Wilson, has written a book on the subject: "Black on Black Violence: Black Self Annihilation In Service of White Domination". Dr Amos Wilson points out the problem and cure in this video:- kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2GbgqKuhtiFn6M

Reflecting on what was said about whites focused on entertaining blacks to get out of a white flight movie rut reminds me of how they used that tactic again with TV in the 90's. New networks like FOX, UPN, & WB relied on black viewership to build a foundation. Once established, they canceled all the shows and focused on whites again. It always felt weird that a great purge happened across just about every network around the same time. I'm sure streaming services are up next to take advantage of us.

Relatively speaking : there has been no progress made with respect to "national association/advancement of colored ppl." in Hollywood or any other industry for that matter ! And so while excited to have seen this piece ,at the same time, I'm depressed as to my reality of being Black in America. It's quite depressing

Black capitalism is not Black liberation - don’t get it twisted. Black capitalism requires a permanent underclass just like white supremacist capitalism.

My mother wrote the paychecks for the cast featured in the '73 rockumentary "Let The Good Times Roll". That would be good to show on your channel ...Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Little Richard .... I hope that cast got paid well but it was a white production, so...I was 15 n worked at the front desk, then they got me recording my teenage songs too but it was cutthroat as well, sex abuse etc... and I stepped out of it... as it is now for the greedy who just want you to produce a money maker. Seems like the key is if theres heart in the people in charge.

The writer and director Oscar said somewhere in the 6:46-6:49 minute mark, "there's no difference between whiteploitation and blaxploitation". But proved in his next few sentences and examples, that there indeed is a HUGE difference between the two. It's still a great documentary. I'm just saying. I definitely disagree with that statement. .
