The year is 2075: carlsen vs caruana game 6532 and all games have been drawn. Finally, Carlsen falls to the ground but caruana does so at the same time. Alas, another draw.

Yes, this is modern era where top grandmasters do not make mistakes. They are aided by powerful chess engines. They have nerve of steel and it is beyond the capacity of hobby chess players like me to understand why so much draws...why none of them blunder. They are so good and probably I will never understand exactly how good they are. My only consolation is agadmator's Chess Channel.

You don't expect world champion level players to make mistakes, never mind blunder in a long game format. That's not to say we've seen both players make weak moves at times.
@bardhanjoy

@@Mitjitsu Weak moves according to chess engines, right?....If you shut down the chess engines and then just see it over the boards......I asked my conscience, I couldn't find weak moves....everything looks weak once we turn on the engines. Watch even Tal's game, chess engines will disapprove. I am talking about human stand point. And yes, few years back even world champions made blunders, very few but yes they did...the percentage of blunders were more than what is now. Is the quality of chess is getting better? That's the topic needs thorough discussing.

Are we watching two players so good that they just can't lose in classical time to each other? No, we are not. So why the draws, and as Joydeep brought up, why no "less than optimal" moves? I find this boring. Perhaps a less than optimal move creates the blunder by the opponent? I have seen it time and time again in past Championship games. Either way, and what ever the reasons, this is pretty boring chess.

I have been enjoying your various series immensely, particularly the current one on the WCC 2018 match. Towards the end of your Carlsen-Caruana Game 7 video, you asked for comments regarding the prospect of a tie match, and the possibility of the World Championship Title being determined by Rapid, Blitz or (God forbid), an Armageddon game. So here goes: I am not a fan of mixing time formats to determine championship titles. There is room for Rapid, Blitz, Bullet, and Classical titles, and no need to confuse the process by having titles in one category being determined by games played in an entirely different format. I particularly think that using an Armageddon game to determine a champion is but a small step removed from using a coin flip to determine a sole champion. There is an easy solution to the problem of tied matches. First, make them long enough to make it less likely that the match will be drawn, should one opponent be marginally better than the other. (I would like to see a longer classical match than the current 12 games; 24 might be too long, but 20 seems to me to be an ideal number of games. Played in 6 groups of 3 games with a rest day on every fourth, plus three days for games 19 and 20 [game 18 - rest day - game 19 - rest day - game 20], that would total 27 days, with 2 more for opening and closing ceremonies, 29 days total. And that would be for a two year cycle; for a 1 year cycle, perhaps 10 games would be practical, but I favor a two year cycle.) Second, and this would be a major change, declare the players in a drawn match to be co-champions, splitting the prize fund 50-50. After all, if after 20 games one player cannot defeat the other, than I think it reasonable to conclude that they are of equal strength. Producing a winner by changing the nature of the games played defeats the purpose of the match in the first place, and is rather anachronistic in my view. It's akin to pleasing the crowd watching two gladiators fight, by insisting that they fight until one is killed - to please individuals not one of whom could have lasted for more than a minute against either opponent! Consider two past matches, Lasker vs Schlechter 1910, and Kasparov vs Karpov, 1987, both drawn. Is there any reason to think that the champion was the stronger of the two contestants because he was able to win the final game, drawing the match? Sure, it was exciting, but to me, it makes about as much sense as awarding the title to the player who scored the first win of the match. Neither player could defeat the other, so in my opinion, the match should have produced co-champions. Just my opinion, of course. I welcome others to chime in with theirs.

@renyhp
@renyhp 6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you about the fact that the draws should produce a direct result, without tie breaks. At first glance I liked your idea of saying they're co-champions, but then what would you do two years after? Who of the two will the challenger challenge? I am even starting to think that the drawn match should declare the challenger as the new champion. That would mean we would probably see more champions, and if the ex-champion is really a strong player, he could re-challenge again the new champion as challenger after two years.

I'm lazy about openings too. It's boring after a while to go over the same patterns and sequences endlessly. So I can't really criticize Carlsson. I love surprises in chess, patterns and sequences that you don't expect. I look back at games by Tal and others and just love their dynamism and excitement. I wish we could see more of that. I understand why that's not happening, but I miss it and want to see some risk taking. Isn't chess supposed to be fun? I did enjoy Game 6 with the Petroff. That was an interesting game with some mind-bending twists through which you really had to think. That was fun. I genuinely enjoy agadmator and really appreciate your commentary. This is a lot of work for you, and I'm really impressed.

I agree with the proposition that if (after 12 or whatever games) the match is tied, then the old champion keeps the title; the challenger has to push harder to win. I mean, with current format it may all come down to the armageddon format, where white has to win to win the match, but it seems there is more left to the chance (the color is decided by drawing of lots, and there is only 1 game of sudden death)... With the world records in sport, the first one to achieve certain thing holds the record. You may get equal result, but the record is still held by the first guy. You have to be better to get it for yourself. "So 12 draws = Carlsen wins" is not a bad idea at all. After all, if you are challenging the champion, you better have something prepared.

I like the idea of making the series longer (maybe 20 games), using standard time controls (90 minutes +30 after move 40 with 30 sec increment), and simply ending with no decision if the final score is tied. If the match is indecisive, the incumbent champion retains his title. It makes more sense than deciding the winner with blitz games.

Draws happen a lot in chess, especially when two grandmasters are playing. It's not a dead match. The problem is they are playing too conservative, that's why draw is so much more likely. Anyway, after 12 draws they will play a very exciting rapid game. It's impossible to always play the best movie on rapid.

Fischer said chess is dead. This world championship is showing that. There is no longer any creativity or art in the game. Computers and memorization had killed it. I think we ought tonplay Fischer Random. It's the next evolution. Agadmator - what do you think about Fischer's view and his appeal to play the new version?

They need to introduce a 20k prize for every win or something.There needs to be some incentive to push for the win. More people than ever before are probably watching and following this WCC than ever before but all these draws are just killing the whole spectacle. Even hardcore chess fans are getting pissed off .

Something needs to be done. How about like a skins golf game? 10k on each game, draws carry over. Right now there would be 80k on game 8. Or maybe a reverse pool? Something like starting with 120k (arbitrary number here) and for every draw, the prize money drops. I don't want to penalize a player for pulling out an amazing improbable draw, but that would mean his opponent went for it, and that is what we want.

What about the idea of using Fischer Chess 960 for the tiebreack with classical time format instead of rapid games? We want to find out the chess world champion and its the one who is the strongest live on the board, not the one with best memory or best chess engineering team supporting him. Classical time format because its a classical event of course.

I'm beginning to warm to Fischer Chess 960 more and more. I think this statement says it perfectly: "World Championship games are expected to last four, perhaps even six hours. This one was over in little more than two. The Indian World Champion was destroyed; nay, humiliated. On Bulgarian television that night, Topalov explained that the entire game had been prepared by him and his team at home; he didn’t need to find a single original move to score a simple first game victory." - Ian Rogers

Here are my ideas (in order of preference): 1. Go back to 24 games 2. First to win 3 games 3. First to have a lead of +3 4. Gauntlet: no switching of colours if there is a draw. 5. Change the point system: 1.5 for win with black; 1 for win with white; 0.5 for draw; 6. Some combination of the above

Hard to say which player has an advantage going forward but Caruana seems better prepared and Carlsen has been "pushing" to create winning chances without anything to show for his efforts. It feels like if one player wins one game it will be over for the other...

I agree about draws. One option will be: first defends the challenger is forced to win the match ( the champion will be playing for the draws). Second defense : the champion is forced to win the match. Other option: random at the start of the match a coin decides who is forced to win. I prefer the first option

Since you ask the question, I think so far this can be considered positive for Caruana; however if it is tied at the end of the classical games I'd have to say Carlsen retains his title in the rapid and blitz. As long as we have many daring chessplayers who take risks and explore creative novelties I don't think classical chess is in trouble at all. And we have *many* great classical time control players. For example Ding Liren, the up and coming chess powerhouse, is a great classical player.

In the candidates there were 8 players and each one played with everyone else 2 times, thus each player played 14 matches and 56 matches played in total. From these 56 only 20 were wins and the other 36 were draws. In such a tournament the point system has to be half a point for the draw and 2 points for the win. Even better would be 2 points for the win with white pieces and 3 points for the win the black pieces. That last configuration holds water since in the beginning of the game white are technically slightly better. I think with that addition (3 points the black win, 2 points the white win, and 1/2 points the draw), even the games for the new champion will become less drawish (for sure the candidates tournament will become less drawish).

If the match is tied after 12 games, tie breaks will be played on the final day in the following order, if necessary: --Best of 4 rapid games (25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move). The player with the best score after four rapid games is the winner; otherwise they proceed to blitz games.--Up to five mini-matches of best of 2 blitz games (5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment after each move). The player with the best score in any two-game blitz match is the winner. If all five two-game matches are tied, an "Armageddon" game is played.--One sudden death "Armageddon" game: White receives 5 minutes and Black receives 4 minutes. Both players receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. In case of a draw, the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.
