It's quite rare to be acknowledged on the street. Rarer still to have someone tip and make direct eye contact at close range, 2:45 and then acknowledge the camera. I was almost scared. She has ears! What? How can this be? I always have fun playing this jam and sometimes, like today, people respond like humans with actual senses.

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. If you liked the performance, please think about supporting me on patreon/paypal tip/bandcamp.
4) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
5) It's a lot of unpaid work to post these videos all the time so please try to help me keep the channel going. Many thanks to those that have supported me! It means a lot!
6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.
8) I'm playing a Parker fly guitar, limited '4 seasons' edition 'Autumn', from 2008. Only 25 exist of this model. Very light at 5 lbs, very versatile tones with piezo pickups, carbon fibre body, stainless steel frets never wear out. Company is out of business. My pedals are zen drive (no longer made), wah. The amp is a Traynor travel mate 50 watt running on lithium battery. Also no longer made. I sometimes use a Pog 2 and a pitch fork.
9) I don't use picks. Tone variety and personality much better without one. All sounds come from fingers, thumb, and upstrokes. In spite of no pick I am still able to play fairly fast using hammer ons, pull offs, slides, left hand legato. This also allows me to play octaves easily.

Fact, as a guitarist i can tell you that we have to practice hundreds of thousands of hours or we loose our skill (in school for life). So many enjoy our music at clubs (4 hour set) including doctors (charge $100's/for 10 minutes visit) and lawyers (charge $450/per hour). These people want entertainment free and never tip. Yet the struggling and hard working class do tip. So many walked pass this living angel and his positive music and didn't feel a single frequency. SMH

I’m a drummer and it’s the same...we have that use it or lose it skill. I had to cut way back on my drumming due to some health issues. Now I’m getting treated by some amazing doctors. I’m having to slowly relearn my skill. It’s totally worth it though. Music heals and brings people together.

Just think of how much an American congress-person makes and they barely do anything to "earn" it. Maybe the hear him and like what he does just not in the mood. Alot of people are walking with someone maybe they would rather hear the person they choose to walk with than a random guy playing a song they didn't ask for.. Look busking has its value but I dont understand why people just should be expected to tip. He knows this he's just playing the numbers game if 1 % tip he still will do ok. I enjoy his videos because I was in the mood to hear a random guitar riff, even know I wont put him on a playlist to hear numerous songs.

The traffic is too loud and his recorder picks up his sound better for his videos for our benefit. I'd rather listen and watch this guy play the hits more than the original bands themselves. The craftsmanship is phenomenal and he plays his guitar purely technical to the point where it is his natural smoothness. Only those who have the hands may do this.

Shatnershairpiece’s videos continue to display a sad truth about our society. People will rather rush home, watch TV and continue with their grey lives ... complaining about the world ... when they had an opportunity to stop and appreciate a live performance of a very talented guitarist. We have stopped recognising real beauty. We are blind to the unique skills of others, whilst we chase our mediocre lives. ... communication is the giving and receiving between two (or more) persons - Love may begin to germinate when we recognise this. 💐☮️🌷

56 year old (cover band) classic rock and metal drummer/singer here. I agree with the state of mankind these days, it is sad indeed. I got into Steely Dan in my 30's and still love their stuff. The older I get, the more I gravitate towards this type music, although I'll never betray my beloved Zeppelin.

It would be fascinating to see him travel to different cities and see if there's a difference in how people respond. Sadly, here in Seattle, I think the response would be much the same now. Back in the day, people probably would have been a little more receptive, but it's become very corporate, homogeneous and self-centered. Everyone's in a hurry and too concerned with chasing the Big Tech paycheck.
