another tip, play upbeat funky music. high energy songs will attract bigger crowds and hold their attention long enough to reach in their pockets. also, once a crowd has reached critical mass, finish your song and take a break. people who were going to pay will pay then and a new crowd can gather. just a quick wave, thank you, sip of water, fiddle with settings, people will drop money and clear off. also wear an outfit, be entertaining, dress like youre doing a show and look like your having fun. slow melodic music in normal street wear might catch a few people for a minute or two but a crazy get up and high energy music will get a crowd. put on a show, too many buskers treat it like a self indulgent practise session, not a performance, which it is. happy excited people in large groups are much looser with their money than morose passerby'.

yes I agree with the energy songs. That definitely works!

hi I know this is a late reply I'm thinking of starting busking and what is the significance of this 'police dont cross' strap, I plan to juggle etc so is it necessary? also any tips for a juggling busker? cheers
@Yourmomma5684 жыл бұрын
@@fisty539 bot sure what you are reffering to, but if you see yellow police line do not cross tape, it means that area has been sectioned off by police for some reason and they are asking you to stay out of that area. starting busking anywhere with covid is bad idea. I think New Zealand doesn't have any but idk about anywhere else. another tip is to incorporate humor, or even a gag into your show, and you should really treat busking as a perfomance art rather than just as playing music. jokes, musical gags, quick songs as a punchlineto a set up, incorporating shameless requests for money into your schtick, incorporate the audience. it also helps to give the audience something they have never seen before. my dad traveled all over the continent as a young man busking to pay his way. they had 2 home made Instruments they would use on occasion to draw a crowd. one was his partners elaborate washboard set up with bells, borns whistles and even old fire helmet were incorporated into the rythem section of the traditional washboard. they also had something they called a fallopian tuba. which was a tuba they made out of pvc pipe and an old kitchen sink. they'd play polka music on that to draw a crowd and then go into the rest of their act when they had a bit of an audience. not saying you have to go that far, but find some ironically silly things and come up with stupid names. call a harmonica a mouth organ, a jew harp a didgeridon't, a kazoo a jay leno call. i do a thing where i play the national anthem on a duck call. tie tambourines on your boots. you really have to be comfortable making a fool of yourself, and it comes off as being a clown almost, but it really puts people in a good mood and if you can look a bit disheveled in your dress (go for colorful hippy or thrift store look) peiple are pretty willing to put a few coins in. one time i wore a suit and made literally 6 dollars in 4 hours, so unlike any other performances, don't dress up too nice. whatever you do you want to stand out and make people think this is their only chance to see something unusual. for juggling specifically i don't have any experience but i imagine the same rules apply. do your regular routine but have interesting props visibly waiting off to the side. don't start with your closer, wait until you have a bit of a crowd by doing something showy, but have something ridiculous waiting for them off to the side. after you get a little crowd, finish what you were doing, take a bow and follow up with something really skillful for a few seconds, then announce your next trick with a hook like "now I have one other thing I've been practicing but I haven't tried the real thing yet, maybe with the right financial incentives i could be persuaded to attempt this in public," and pull out something dangerous egg on donations and then do a knife on fire act or something. learn some audience interaction tricks to. if you can incorporate them into the juggle then all the better. think of those turkish ice cream guys. maybe learn a couple magic tricks to incorporate.
@Yourmomma5684 жыл бұрын
just thought, you could juggle knives with fuel on them that you ignite mid air with fire breathing. that'd be a show stopper. after that you can end the show with "thank you all, now if you'll excuse me i need to take a break and have a drink, i think i swallowed some of that fire and it need to extinguish it before it comes out the wrong way, good pants are hard to come by these days" that'd be a good crowd recycler.

I noticed that after each song he collected the money and put it away. Only two big coins leftover in the case. I don’t think it had any influence on the spectators willingness to give more money. I'm not getting paid to say this but the batteries I use in my cube streets 1, & 2, are nothing less than Energizers. They never let me down, but I do carry a small plastic container of spare batteries. If you are going to spend over $500AU on a new battery powered amp, at least by some decent brand alkaline batteries...don't skimp, or your amp is going to embarrassingly dead halfway through a song after a few hours.

@@titolarios oh my Lord so true. I saw a couple kids outside of a trader Joe's playing and they had maybe a repertoire of 10 songs no soloing just guitar chords with a girl playing violin Melody of the song. It was okay the first run through but when they reached the end I heard the same song that they started with and I thought, well that's cool they're already getting requests...NOOOooo... They just jumped in and started playing all the songs down again and when they finished again and when they finished again. I was far enough away so that my own trip drowned them out but I could definitely tell what was going on and I couldn't help but feel immense empathy for the poor workers that were stuck all around them. It reminded me of the old spanky and our Gang when, I think it was Alfalfa, that was singing "I'm in the mood for love" over and over and over cuz he didn't know the other words. Good thing to bring up bathroom breaks also because it is never ever permissible to " go behind a bush" I think also in the United States it could be construed as a sex crime. It comes down to urination in public but I've heard that it could be lumped into sex offenders status. As to your signage idea you have or you may have a hard guitar case which when opened up is a nice billboard. Of course your thoughts on priming the tip jar are 100% correct. It's giving the people an idea that you're worth something and not just scattered pennies and giving them choices... A few paper bills, and large denomination coins pave the way for more and the coins are there to make it okay in case that's all they have. Maybe they'd like to tip more but only have some change on hand, well no shame in taking that too. it's only a matter of time before some smart ass puts out a suggested donation ha. There's so many different experiences and tips and protecting your tip jar against some schmuck running off with it is a good idea but you may not want it so close to you that people feel a little strange coming into your space. Congratulations to you and hold your head up high not a lot of people can get out there and do this it's sort of like a stand-up comedian, if it's a solo act and just you.
