My daughter and I just arrived back in Japan this weekend. It always surprises how peaceful it is here, even in a big city. Sunday we were in search of a vegan restaurant and spoke with a Korean-Chinese family. They came back with their car (plus a really cute kid) and took us on a tour of the whole neighborhood, showing us where we could find vegetarian food. We feel safe and welcomed in this area.

How was the vegetarian/vegan food? 🌱
@shawnbuchanan01 Жыл бұрын
@@californiapattycakes4417 We use to live here, so know that western vegan style is not really a thing yet..however, there are a lot of Shinto and Buddhist in Japan. If you explain it in a way of cultural understanding it is easy, then they know..no dashi etc... We have never had problems with food and we have been all over Japan. It is just that it was a rainey Sunday, we had just arrived in the suburbs. One thing is , Japanese people do not really speak English. My Japanese is not great, but my kid is completely fluent. It is not a good idea for parents to rely on their child to read all of the kanji in ingredients..so my mission is to improve my Japanese this summer.

The Japanese pride in the country's beauty and their desire to practice English makes for nice hospitality. At the same time, if you're a foreigner on the Tokyo subway, no one will sit in the empty seat next to you. But generally, life in Japan is peaceful and some people are friendly and some are fearful. So says my 15th year here in Japan.
@TheBlackExJp Жыл бұрын
I’ve had people opt to stand instead of sit beside me, but more ppl sit than not. I feel like ppl sitting beside me has increased over the years, some people bolt to the seat with no hesitation. And yes, some people are fearful when they see me walking in the streets indeed. That’s annoying. My experience is people are a mixed bag. Hitchhiking here taught me a lot. It’s definitely unwise to generalize.

eh, I take the train from Kanagawa to Tokyo every day for at least 2 hours and there are tons of foreigners. Many black people on the train usually after work hours when the trains get crowded, and I've never seen any empty seat beside them. A single or couple experiences someone had that was shared on the internet shouldn't overrule the way everyone else acts.

The whole “empty seat next to gaijin” sounds so 1980s. I just don’t see that anymore.

Japan. A place where they have stores with no staff. Just shelves full of stuff and customers walk in and pay for what they want. I guess it would be a place where you can hitch hike.

Planing going to New York this October but a bit scared if I take a train on the subway, I might get harassed because I am Japanese, maybe people are not nice there compared to Japan!! Hope I can have a good time there

Been there several times and you will be fine. Just prepare to know people do not move out of your way even though they see you with luggage. Other than that get a New York train map to get around and only use taxi if necessary. My dad lives there and I used to travel regularly especially for Christmas and New Year. I did not like the New York pizza that so many people talk about - maybe it is just me however the New York cheesecake is the best I have ever tasted. If you go to the status of liberty, take the lift - if you want to walk up, you better be very very fit because no lift down, you have to walk back down. Go see all the tourist places and food portions are huge so you will be very full.

I'm not surprised the ladies found you "interesting." When I was in college 20 years ago, the Japanese immigrant students were fascinated with the black men on campus. The other Asian students dated men of all ethnicities, but without exception the Japanese women paired up with men of African descent. I never got any explanation for this, but I suspect it's inspired by romanticized stories of interracial relationships that began in post-war occupied Japan. Any insight on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Start off by treating them like human beings first and foremost, taking care of yourself is also a nice bonus. Be respectful of their culture and country, make an effort to learn the language or at least have a translator on hand (they sell portable ones or you can just use google) Let whatever happens just happen naturally and if all else fails go visit one of their famous “love hotels” lol

Right. If I had that separationist mindset, the thousands of Black folks lives who have been impacted since I started this channel back in 2017 wouldn’t have been impacted. But I respect that you acknowledged that that’s just your opinion. It would be beneficial if you explored a different perspective. The Black community is not as powerful as it has the potential to be because of one singular thing - Disunity. Believe it or not.
@mekusliberal7155 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBlackExJp totally Agree with you. I don't have the separationist mindset in anyway. I guess my intentions didn't reflect the words. Apologies. I would normally move with the idea African rather than a Color. But guess I might be wrong in my views and still require growth. I sincerely hope I didn't sound negative in anyway. Stay Blessed
