Black Mesa: Blue Shift - Captive Freight - The HECU Arrives (Gameplay Teaser)

After the Resonance Cascade, Barney makes his way to the surface of the Black Mesa Research Facility, where he witnesses the arrival of the military unit known as the HECU - special forces imbued with one duty: wipe out all traces of the experiment that led to the incident...including its personnel.
A brief showcase of the first HECU battle in "Captive Freight", the fourth (and lengthiest) chapter in the incredibly well-made mod Black Mesa: Blue Shift. I tried my best to make it seem like an "official gameplay teaser" and intended this video to give a small taste of what the chapter has in store for players. If you like this, rest assured that the rest of the chapter only escalates in intensity.

The fourth chapter of Black Mesa: Blue Shift (Captive Freight) released recently and I had the chance to play through it this past weekend. It’s an absolute blast and I highly recommend that anyone with at least a passing interest in this game try it out; it’s easily the best work that HECU Collective has put out thus far; impressively large and detailed maps, intense and entertaining firefights, excellent music, and stellar voice acting. It's also incredibly long at 11 maps. Not complaining, as I never felt like it was padded out. However, this does mean that it will take some time for me to get a full playthrough of this chapter out, especially given the numerous combat encounters. Since it may not come out for a bit, I decided to upload the first combat encounter of the chapter in the form of a “teaser” to hopefully whet the appetites of those who are awaiting the full chapter playthrough. I’ve always wanted to make a mock “official gameplay trailer” so it was quite fun editing this encounter to imitate that. Hopefully you guys like it - I will continue to work on the rest of the chapter in the meantime. See you all ahead!

Eager to see it! I actually love the first person animations in this, its a nice touch. The Marines at the start caught me off guard, yet I quickly realized those were the guys you saw at the end of the last chapter. I also liked the different weapon animations for bareny, plus recoil management due to his tranaing, all those details are impressive for a workshop mod. Plus the other guard in chapter 3 was a nice idea too, I really love how they added scripts for when the NPCS can't follow you anymore in Black Mesa I am eager how you will handle the marines later on. Me, I rushed them ,mostly, due to the open terrain most of the time, trying to end fights as quickly as possible, given you can't restore armor as easily as with the HEV.

I loved this chapter the most. A note if you encounter any bugs with the allies: save before any scripted sequences, and hang to the back of the group. I had a couple times where their pathfinding got thrown off and someone got left behind.

This is really the only time you see the HECU and they don't IMMEDIATELY open fire on you so when I got here for the first time, it surprised me but I still knew I was being set up. Really great chapter, on par with Surface Tension

Yeah, the idea to have them be non-hostile at first is very original. Pretty fitting that the surface chapters of both games are the highlight for many people (myself included)

I'm definitly happy with how you characterize Barney here. He knows damn well that the military are not here to save them but he plays along till the moment they set a trap for him, then he bolts it for the nearest "safe haven" and improvises from there. Well done

Wow, didn’t know the hecu can have a few “words” with us first. Other players just shoot them at first sight. I like how you roleplay when you look at the dead scientist then look at the soldiers start getting to position , like your character notice something odd then immediately move to cover. Great work.

Oh my gosh, that was really interesting. I didn't realize they were setting a trap for him at first. It seemed weirdly cool to have Black Mesa soldiers working with Barney. A betrayal like that is something I haven't really seen in a game before.

It makes sense if we are fair, I doubt they literally rolled in guns blazing but likely arrested or tricked staff initially before word maybe spread they were hostile or when it went bad enough they started firing on sight on staff. (tbf I still think the whole "Backup is hostile trope" makes little sense from a semi-realistic POV and is more fitting to a cliché or early 2000s game plot :D. The government invested in BM which is clear by lore and they roll in to "help" by massacring the staff that can fix it in the first place?)

​@@Paonporteur It's not the real life zombie virus that does things as it happens in this game. But rather what's inside the headcrab's toxin does its magic and makes the dead body rise. The thing is, the toxin inside of the headcrab only helps mutating a normal human's dna / body to allow the headcrab to gain strength, power and even skills to digest / feed upon human flesh. the Headcrab controls the body through the host's nervous system. The whole thing is actually explained in Opposing Force, don't know if you've played that single player expansion before. Judging by your comment and knowledge, you haven't. One of the scientists in Opfor says "Have you ever seen such a magnificent species? These crabs can completely control their hosts’ nerves system. Can you imagine what the next stage of mutation looks like?" This just proves how they hatch onto their preys to control their bodys to evolve / survive or however you like to put it in words. And there's a scripted scene where zombie soldier gets up and throws the scientist to smash the glass...there's some x-ray pictures in that room explaining the initial purpose of headcrabs.

@@Unknown-ek1ox I'm under the impression they believe the scientists, (at least some of them) are responsible. In any case, gman likely played a big part in how it turned out. We know he doesn't like survivors, at least ones he can't keep an eye on or contain. (All survivors we know of have been in direct or indirect contact with gman, wether they know it or not). Military makes sure black mesa personell don't get out of nuke range, and the nuke takes out the rest.

Gotta love how Barney realized that the marines killed the Scientist. He heard a marine say a live one is coming while whispering, and for some reason, the marines asked if Barney knew the scientist. The marines definitely don’t need to know them. They just want to eliminate Freeman and everyone responsible with the Resonance Cascade. Also, I’m pretty sure that Captive Freight takes place when Gordon is in the Office Complex.

It was interesting to see how you (role-playing Barney) would react to the HECU at the start of this chapter. Barney witnessed them carelessly dumping bodies into a pit but has yet to see them actually killing anyone first hand. I liked that your first reaction in the distrust was one of defense rather than offense. On my play-through, the moment they told me to check out the dead body was when I went ham with the shotgun.

I did something similar, putting myself into the resident badass normal of the series. Only I didn't go into the shed. I peeked at the scientist, turned to the first guy who invited me into the trap, blasted him, whipped around and blasted the other before he could react, then ran for cover.

I noticed that near the end of chapter 4, air raid sirens are blaring and explosions are going off everywhere and the soldiers are seen running and panicking. This makes me confused with the timeline as that would imply you are in the Forget About Freeman chapter, but in Blue Shift you finish the game when Freeman is captured in Apprehension. I wonder if they plan on changing the timeline in this version.

Well, you got to consider, the chapter before Apprehension was at nightfall, so it would make sense Captive freight is close to evening. The explosions and siren, was in We got hostiles too, when the artilery forced Gordon back underground. It would make sense artillery got called in throughout the day

Yeah, if I recall WGH also took place at sunset and the HECU had started a bombardment at that time (why they did that I do not know). So it does line up with the original game's timeline more or less I believe

Realistically, I'm guessing they didn't because Barney is pretty close to at least one of the soldiers at all times and they didn't want to give him any excuse to open fire and kill one of their own (even though gameplay-wise you totally can). Perhaps they wanted to lead Barney all the way to the drainage hole so that it's an easy, "bloodless" kill and they get rid of the evidence.

Never said that you can't make something from the same idea twice, but it won't really be unique at that point as the first time.
