It’s refreshing to hear Boris compliment Jens. A lot of amateur or nonmusical listeners say the vocals are Meshuggah’s weakness. But in fact, the rhythm of Jens vocals, and his consistency in live performances, shows off his musical intelligence. Boris is the second guy I’ve seen single out Jens’ vocals-the other was a professional songwriter.

Your story at the beginning sounds exactly like me learning to play guitar. I could literally play the entire sweep picking section from this godless endeavor by nevermore before I could comfortably switch between the cowboy chords. I could play the cowboys from hell solo passably, but I couldn't play the riffs. I could play Canon rock, but I couldn't play canon. I actually auditioned for a band and they were amazed by my sweep picking, legato runs and tapping(was not a prestigious band.) Then they tried to teach me an absurdly simple riff that was just a gallop on the E, then a single note on the A, repeatedly. I couldn't play it. I'm not even joking. I spent a solid two years of playing 4+ hours a day entirely practicing lead wankery. My rhythm playing sucked, my vibrato was trash, my bends were offensive, my dynamics were random and even my palm muting needed work. But, I could play a non stop string of 16th note triplets at like 180 bpm. Don't ignore the fundamentals, kids.

Hey I'm just a guy randomly passing through KZbin, big Meshuggah fan, and ive never watched a drummers reaction video lol but i found watching your response to this amazing legend of a song very entertaining, i never before "felt" the anxiety you were referring to in the drummers sense when hearing this song, and I've heard it and played it 1000 times in my life (on guitar). But when i think about it, you're damn right lmao like the pressure is intense. Tomas Haake is a drumming God, there's no other possible opinion about it. And when you posed if it was perhaps the most difficult bass drum part, or complex, or whichever you said or meant, it certainly wields a strong case for it in my mind lol this is actually to me one of the most beautiful songs ever written tbh, these patterns are 100% unique, original, they go HARD, they ARE HARD, and the patterns are legitimately, like, measures of music i have never heard before. To put it in Meshuggah terms it's basically the best polyrhythms ever invented lol like honestly as far as hard, unique riffs, how ya gonna beat Bleed, ya know? If you can play Bleed correctly on any instrument, then you ought to be able to play ANYTHING on that instrument lmao it's a new standard of writing for real. But my bad about the ranting lol i just was expressing i am enjoying your video a lot, so thanks a lot ✌ btw i subbed

This kind of setup is all about efficiency. Big surround kits are very cool and look good live but are very inefficient if/when your all about maximum effect from minimum movement. But it's definitely something to get used to because it creates small channels to hit most of your instruments now. Accuracy is key. Polyrhythms for life.
