I think it's a tad farfetched to call it mind-blowing. It is pretty incredible how tight they are as an ensemble, but it's pretty clear to me it's come from stupid amounts of hard work and dedication to their craft, in the same way a painter or sculptur might inspire the same thoughts. It's not beyond comprehension or anything like it, just fucking loads of passion innit.

When I was 20 (years of age) three bands that I knew of would go on stage and just make noise - raucous, unstructured noise. These bands were the MC5, the Stooges (w/Iggy Pop) and Pink Floyd. The MC5 began their career by playing Stones tunes, and their first single was “I Can Only Give You Everything” by Them (w/Van Morrison). Then, they saw a performance by the great Sun Ra & His Space Arkestra, and they realized that what they had been doing was shit. So they began imitating free jazz (Sun Ra, Albert Alyer). The MC5, the Stooges and Pink Floyd were my three favorite bands. But within 8 years, the 5 had gone back to Rock & Roll, Iggy was singing with David Bowie, and Pink Floyd were doing anthems and dirges. What does this augur for Black MIDI in the future? Stay tuned !

the KEXP John L is the best version by far, need the other brass to give it the extra kick.

This is the best band currently playing live... That I dislike/hate with an unbridled id. Everything about this band is unmitigated genius, and every note that sounds from their prodigious musical talent... I just can't abide. It is me that is broken, not the band.

Man im with you I get their technical proficiency, its cool when bands can improv like that, greep going HAM egg and cheese like a goddamn goblin is hilarious, but idk i just don't get it. I'm trying but it aint clicking

You don't have to put yourself down to dislike something lmao. They're definitely wild but I don't see the appeal myself either. This performance is honestly the best thing that came out of the whole Cavalcade album. They really need to play something more interesting in their studio recordings
