The drummer, Morgan Simpson, is in my humble opinion (as a decent drummer myself), one of the most talented and technically adept drummers I’ve seen come along in a long while. The whole band is fantastic as well. Black Midi is one of those bands that if you don’t get it, you won’t get it, no matter how hard you try or how much acid you drop lol Fun fact, Black Midi is also a niche genre of music. It’s essentially making a lot of noise by layering many many many sounds, with the musical foresight to see the big picture that when it all comes together you end up with something actually coherent. Blows my mind from a production standpoint

@Daniel Duma John L sounds like a song that could've came straight out of their trilogy set with the repetition, slow build-up throughout the song, weird vocal performance and religious lyrics. @@Dsksea there's definitely some Swans-y influence. You can hear it more on segments like the crescendo to bmbmbm or pretty much any time they just slam a chord. However the similarities start and end their as I don't think black midi's music is as tonally and texturally focused as Swan's music.

Transcendent is definitely the right word for it. I'm a drummer myself, and while Morgan Simpson should be a household name at this point for any musician, not until I sat and watched them perform Dethroned as they did here did I truly appreciate the musicianship of especially the horn players. The wall-of-sound/drone portions begin as something transcendent and kind, personal, and then through subtle nuance the notes in symphony take on a dissonance which served to dissociate me from the once kind nature previous, to something nonetheless transcendent but now... Not exactly impersonal, the person no longer has anything to do with it; it's something esoteric and monistic, loving and also terrible. Truly beautiful. And Geordie's vocals became a shout into that Void.

First reaction was that I don't like this but somehow I couldn't turn it over. I then realised I was mesmerised by it. I watched all the way to the end and was left with a 'WTF have I just witnessed?' feeling. Incredible. This isn't just music, it's an experience.
