Whats lost in the discussion was how that same technology actually FUELED the murders. Not to be pessimistic but in Crocodile, the crimes evolved with the solutions.
@syabri23426 жыл бұрын
The technology didn't fueled the murder, the fear of punishment did, and it's already a thing. :c For exemple, let's say I want to kill a guy. I murder him, but then someone witness the murder ! So I end up killing that person too. There, same scenario. Would you say then "Prison fueled the murders, if it wasn't for the police, he wouldn't have murdered that second person" ?
@GodsonSublime6 жыл бұрын
I apologize. I am just seeing your response. You would be absolutely correct in regard that the technology did not fuel the initial two murders. Your hypothetical falls flat because the context in which we are currently speaking - there were no (physical) witnesses after her second manslaughter/accident - until the insurance viewed her memories which started an onslaught. The fear of punishment applies regardless. The features of this EP were more about the degrees of separation/correlation and this new invasive tracking as shown in how the insurance woman found her with benevolent intent and her turning it around to actually find and murder the husband (malevolent). The story makes it obvious that she wouldn't have murdered the husband or the child if she were unaware of that technology. She wouldn't even have murdered the insurance woman if that mental imaging assignment was optional or nonexistent. We understand that the fault isn't with the tech. The fault remains completely with her but it would be dishonest to ignore how the tech aided her on her final spiral down ("fueled" may be a bit of a overstatement - but it played its part). Specifically speaking - how she utilized tech with such malicious intent. She frankly turned to hunting for a victim.

My theory though

Nah I doubt this theory, and I'll tell you why. An insurance company can lose millions or billions just from one bad claim alone. Therefore, the insurance company's investors would fire any CEO who didn't invest in the very best technology available. dlweiss Well...that is correct, but the regardless the presence of the technology she still killed 3 additional people, a family of 3...which includes a baby. @dlweiss6 жыл бұрын
Oh, absolutely. Black Mirror is never just "technology is bad" so much as "technology can bring out the worst parts of humanity without intending to." I simply meant that while Mia is already a bad person and a murderer, it was that specific tech that drove her to become a borderline serial killer in like 48 hours.

@TheCheekPunisher6 жыл бұрын
I feel like part of her was thinking that she’s already killed 1 person to protect herself, so it would be pointless not to continue killing people that could potentially ruin her life, it’s pretty realistic, most people would kill to save themselves or in her case save her life with her family, put yourself in her shoes, you’ve gotta kill someone to save your current life with your family which is perfect, people don’t like to admit it but most of us would kill, it’s nothing unnatural.
@GSpivv6 жыл бұрын
Something I feel like the crew missed was that she wouldn't have killed the husband/family if not for the technology existing in the first place. The memory technology was responsible both for the death of the baby and the capture of the person who murdered it.
@KainErrow6 жыл бұрын
I'd argue that, as essentially the memory technology is just an extension of any forensic technology. We can't really blame fiber analysis when someone decides to burn down an apartment building to cover up their stolen rug operation (obviously that's an extreme reach of logic there, but I think you might get what I'm going for).
@KainErrow6 жыл бұрын
That, but also about how technology can change human society and open up flaws that maybe already existed but we didn't really understand. Think about 'Hated in the Nation' and how social media gives rise to new levels of harassment: that part of our character has always been there, but having over a million faceless individuals hate your guts via Tweet hasn't been an option until the last 15 - 20 years or so. Black Mirror is really all about the scientific axiom of how Man's Reach often exceeds his* Grasp. Just because we can do something, or use something, doesn't mean we have the maturity or understanding to do so wisely. #Feminism
@JennyofOldStones7136 жыл бұрын

That's a lot of crap. We are all responsible for our actions. You cannot use technology to cover up your crime or a tragedy just because you want to escape responsibility. If that happens would you come back and kill the survivors, or steal the cctv cam, so they wont link you to the incident? Mia is a sociopathic murderer, pure and simple.

Good discussion, but Chris is getting a little out there. The criminal courts system is screwed. Defense liars (I mean lawyers) play too many games with the legal system. They get search warrants thrown out for typos. They ask yes or no questions for circumstances that require deeper answers. Once someone was on trial, if there was a way to get clear memories from a person, that should be used to prove the case. For example, say technology existed on par with that in The Entire History of You (or just a refined memory extractor. If someone was on trial for murder and they were innocent and were a victim of circumstances or had been set up, then this would easily prove their innocence. Conversely, if they were guilty, it would prove their guilt beyond ANY doubt. It would also provide the circumstances behind the murder (as opposed to "My client wasn't there." "My client was there but left when the victim was still alive." "My client acted in self-defense." "My client killed the victim due to " Imagine that. No more game playing with the law and the system (because we can't really call it the justice system) would finally become about truth instead of who can manipulate the law better.

She preferred to take the chance of being able to beat the probe than to take the chance of having the police take notice of her at all.

I think the point of this episode is that they use the technology to find criminals but it’s the technology that’s creating criminals.

Mia was already a criminal well before this technology
@khazms6 жыл бұрын
Harleen Quinzel She was not a criminal, she was an accomplice to a crime. But she had to kill the guy who felt guilty because they would have surely found him with technology. And she knew that if the authorities found him, they would check his memory and his memory shows her being an accomplish, therefore she had to kill him. It helps find criminals and is like.. 100% evidence or proof but it also creates criminals due to their fear of being caught, so they go above and beyond like this. It started as an accident, but her fear of being caught for sure due to the technology made her into a serial killer.

But with technology, as soon as something is made to look at our memories, someone is going to make something to mask the memories. Police radar guns came out then the radar detectors came out. IP tracking came and IP masking shortly thereafter. The woman just didn't have time to find the memory scrambler.

I'm with Mark McKeown...I prefer the darker episodes of "Dark Mirror"....Just for example "Shut Up and Dance" is my favorite ever. I think you can get happy endings and feel good stuff (like Junipero and DJ) anywhere. The dark stuff Mirror does is what makes it unique and worth watching. About the title "Crocodile"...for me, the title could also allude to the crocodile in Peter Pan. Hook hears the swallowed alarm clock, pursuing him always....signifying that his end is always near and his past will eventually be his undoing.

The government wouldn't have to make such technology mandatory for it to become near-compulsory. Here's how it'd work: "Oh you want car insurance. Well just tick this box agreeing to mind scans. You don't want to? Well I'm afraid our non-scan policy is 10 times more expensive." It would be the same for health insurance and jobs working with children, and tons of other stuff. Pretty soon if you haven't consented you might as well go and live in the wilderness because you can't do anything.
@Greenlion7816 жыл бұрын
Omg guys, the point of the episode was that the technology caused her to become this way. If there never was this mind reading tech, she and her boyfriend would've just gone to the grave w/ the bicyclist accident and nobody else needed to get hurt.
@JennyofOldStones7136 жыл бұрын
Greenlion781 Mia is responsible for her own actions. This story is not about the technology overtaking us, but how we chose to utilize it and cope with it. When her and her boyfriend hit and killed that person, this particular technology was not around yet. Does the fact that they chose not to tell the cops make this in incident any different from her other killings? What about when she murdered her ex? She didn’t know about the technology then either. Sorry, but you can’t go and kill 3 additional people, who are a family...one of which a baby btw, and just blame it on technology. She killed them because she made the choice to. She could have just turned herself in long before all this.
@nonesummit6 жыл бұрын
she didn't murder her ex...it appeared more like an accident, they both fell and he hit his head on the floor. the other deaths were premeditated murders in order to clean her tracks.
@anonymes28846 жыл бұрын
He fell and hit his head sure. And then she leans on his windpipe and kills him. The cyclist was an accident, everyone after that is murder.
@JennyofOldStones7136 жыл бұрын
nonesummit she did murder her ex. If you watch it again, he doesn’t fall, she pushes him to the ground. Then she makes sure he’s dead by pressing on his windpipe as the person above just said. It wasn’t premeditated, but it was in the moment and it was murder. She had the intent to kill, and not only that, she covered it up.
@mannylugz58726 жыл бұрын
True. It was an accident . No matter what would happen, they should have faced the reality that a human being died and they have a part in it although they didnt meant it. Its the right thing to do. Instead, she followed a much darker path and turned evil.

One of the points is that increasing innovations in technology and surveillance are supposedly really good at catching murderers, or it’s perhaps bad because it pushes people who are capable of murder into murdering each other more and more to avoid punishment. But is Mia less of a monster for having red eyes filled with tears every time she murders?
@mandycat85 жыл бұрын
Mia didn’t drop the ex boyfriend in cement, this seems to take place in Iceland and they use geothermal venting for heat. She dropped him in a geothermal shaft.

This one felt way more personal than most others, less commentary on society. Just psycho-analyzing a single character's motivations. But if we're talking episodes up to this point, I don't think ALL of them are way up there. Only half the episodes from Season 3 are classics to me, namely 3x03, 3x04, and 3x06. But I think this episode is better than 3x01 and 3x02.
