I want you guys to know I LOVE watching you DIY videos! I just bought a 32X72 Clayton double wide built in 2004 and it needs almost a gut job because of SEVERE roof damage on the back half of the home. I watch everything you have on youtube, and inspire me to use my "KZbin Certifications: and prior knowledge working and living in a mobile home all my life to start my own journey like you have. Any pointers on filming would actually be a blessing. (editing software, equipment etc) but yall are a blessing and I love watching your channel! God bless! I know these are several years old, and yet still helping and inspiring people like me on my American Dream journey renovating my new home. Also, it may be expensive but most of what I have always used to buy "mobile home sized" items like your window dilemma are website based not local mobile home stores. They are generally cheaper but the shipping is what you have to look for, but sometimes worth it, especially on home even like mine who are 20 years old where the color and types of windows for instance are so outdated they are near impossible to find. I wanted to tell ya that since I have also worked as a Licensed Manufactured Home Sales Consultant in the great State of Texas lol with previous knowledge squeezing ( still) a nickel out of a penny! LOL. Thanks for you videos yall!

OH!.....the joy of homeownership. Some fun. Our house is 100 years old and put together with, what looks to me like, RAILROAD SPIKES! LOL. The kitchen, bath and utility area is the original homestead cabin and our one bathroom was my mother's childhood bedroom. They tore the bunkhouse down when I was a kid. In the "old" part of the house, every time we open something up there is either dry rot or black mold. (could it be the wooden rain gutters leaking?) Seems, my whole life, there's always been a hole in some wall, somewhere cuz something needed fixing. But, when you get the job done, and walk back and forth across a solid, safe floor....put food away in solid, strong cupboards it makes your heart smile :)

Thank you two so much for sharing your home and your improvements! My husband, infant daughter and I lost our home to a fire last year. We managed to scrape enough together through donations from friends and family to buy a replacement manufactured home. It's a single wide from 1983 and was not very well taken care of, so we've been having to pull and replace some of the materials. Seeing you open up this area, particularly the window, was really helpful for me! I kind of expect we're going to go through something similar. I super appreciate you taking the time to film and share this! Makes me feel not alone on this kind of project.

You guys are doing great. I was just going to suggest checking for mobile home parts stores near you but it looks like you got that covered. Don't forget the butyl tape. It will be interesting to see if you put a different sized window in, how you will finish the opening. Also, to save you some work.. you don't need any blocking where the sheets of subfloor come together if the tongue and groove meet. The T&G takes care of that, but it doesn't hurt to add blocking if you want. All in all, your home is in pretty good shape for the age. I think you guys are doing a good thing here by bringing some life back into this home.

Thank you guys, this means a lot coming from you two!!! We're going to be getting a shorter window because of the crazy high price for an exact replacement. We've got to figure out how best to protect the new wall framing we'll be adding in under the new window, too. Any tips are most welcomed! You have our contact info. 😊 We need to come up with a good solution that will mesh with our existing metal siding and be well sealed. The new window will have the nail flange on it, too. It's a Kinro brand dual pane vinyl window.

So keep focused on the end product and you will be finished before you know it.. And , for what it's worth to you guys, I think you all are doing a fantastic job..Oh, and as far as that leak goes that you found while it was raining? Well all I can say is.... Yes, that would be bad. We keep our materials well covered and they would only get exposed to rain as we carried them into the home. We also try to keep the "top" side up when we carry it in so that if either side gets wet, it's the one that will dry out in the room. We've not had any material be wet so far... *knocks on wood*. 😬😎

Sam, I’m so glad that you and Angela have such a great attitude to all your setbacks. Angela, belated happy birthday. I like the temporary kitchen counter 😀. Why do you suppose there is such a paucity/lack of moisture barrier in the original construction? Great job so far. I like the light cabinet wood surface; IMO, too much white if you were to paint them. What type of new counter top are you planning? 🦀
@Newman819645 жыл бұрын
Most of the older mobile homes are like that. They have very little in means of preventing moisture. Mine uses the metal siding and has the ribs going vertically up the sides. Then it has the insulation and then cheap paneling covering the inside. No vapor barrier at all. At the top edges of the siding, wasps go up between the ribs and get behind the siding and into the walls and build nests. I have redone a few of the interior walls so far putting in new insulation with vapor barrier and also spray foaming all the edges where the walls meet the siding. I am going through all that to seal up all the wind leaks and preventing insect infiltration. I have also went around this past month all the way around the mobile home on the outside spraying the spray foam up in the area at the tops and bottoms of the siding to stop the bugs to try and kill anything inside the walls off before tackling the job of doing more walls this coming year.

Thank you David! The only reasons we can come up with for the poor design is just that mobile homes are made to be as cheap as possible while still passing the lowest standards for living spaces. I think they've gotten better with time, but back in the 80's it must have been really lax! We're kicking around the idea of a custom made wood counter top -- made by me (Sam). Still researching though...

The plywood that you see is from prior repairs of previous owners. Most of it is in okay shape, but it's thinner and spongy feeling. The original particle board flooring is very spongy and uneven. We decided to rip it all out to get a solid strong floor to build our kitchen upon. Flat and even floors are also very important for a good looking finished floor. Thank you Sonnie!

I tell you guys, yes mold will make you sick and damage your lungs with time. Stayed at my daughter's apartment, where the downstairs had the smell of mold, and the apartment upstairs had a leak that went straight to downstairs. That's was 2019. Ended up in the hospital a few times that year, once in intensive care, where they asked my daughter my religion and if I wanted a priest: last rights. At the end of the year I went home, started feeling better. Due to covid, my son got me to his apartment so I wouldn't be alone. I'm doing almost fine. But there is permanent damage to my lungs. My daughter moved because she also was continuously sick with allergies, sinus, etc. She bought a small home March this year, and she is starting to feel better. Mold, black, or otherwise, is bad. So I am glad you found it and took care of it. Please use disposable gloves when handling insulation with mold, Sam. Hugs to both of you and the kids.

Luckily the floor was concrete so once we scrubbed the torn linoleum up, we put a new one down. I definitely looks better. He told me that I could do anything I wanted to the apartment as long a I did not make it look worse. We pay our rent on time and it is the cheapest rent in town, so we will stay here.

Like you, I believe a person is not necessarily in huge danger from mold. However, I want to make the point that it definitely depends on how severe the exposure is. I had a cat, whom I believe, ate some mold that was growing in my bathtub calk. She became deathly ill, and I mean deathly. She had to go to the hospital for several days and they said her blood tests showed zero healthy white cells. Her white blood cells were exploded. She did survive, but it was a very serious illness.

Finding one that is as wide as this one has been difficult. We're hoping we've found one, but have to wait another two days to hear if it arrives on the shipment the store already ordered.

Hello this is off topic but I have a question. So I have a mobile home and it's needs a lot of repairing but I also want to buy land to put my mobile home on. Do you think I should repair it before I place it on my own land or should I wait to buy land and repair it now? The only thing I really need to repair now before anything is the pipes everything else can wait. But I'm still not sure what to do.

I believe that over a long period of time you would have gotten ill due to the rot and the mold. Maybe you wouldn’t have gotten sick overnight but over a period of time.

No gloves? Also bleach don’t kill mold it removes the staining of mold it can “kill” it on certain Surfaces not wood, drywall etc. Great video again though I wake up watch yours by the time I’m ready for the day Doug and Ashley’s comes on lol. Oh also I don’t know much about mobile homes, but can you just replace the price of glass? Or is the actual frame bad look closely that happens to older and or cheaper windows!!
@sam-and-angela5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info re: bleach. We've been learning a lot today from comments. The window is only a single pane and will condensate in cold weather and drip inside the home. It also doesn't seal up or close right anymore. Thank you!
@dustinwheeler44685 жыл бұрын
Green Acre Homestead Now days single pane isn’t no good but still replaceable but as I said don’t know much about the mobile home style homes as they’re totally different for weight etc, but if the frame is bad yeah re place it.
@js80395 жыл бұрын
Nah the camber and other inconsistencies of the frame will cause unevenness. No big deal just keep a bundle of cheap asphalt shingles handy. Edit: I am referring to the floor. As the mobile home settles on the piers it will inevitably take on a serpentine shape. A camber is burned into the frame during its manufacturing and will eventually straighten in some parts and not others. One thing I did was to overlay the joists with 3/4 inch ply and then leveled with shingles and glue "liquid nails, PL premium etc." Then I overlayed that with 1/2 ply. It will be a bear to tear up but its level and rigid.

We're not sure, no scales! LOL I would happily accept it though! Maybe it's all this up/down work on the floor. 😂 Thanks! -Sam

NEVER take mold lightly, it killed my brother. The specialist in Lexington KY said that he had breathed black mold spores and the spores made it to his brain and caused a tumor that turned into cancer, surgery only delayed the inevitable, the tumor returned and the cancer spread, taking his life. You should have taken a sample to have it checked. I am allergic to cheese mold, which means I am also allergic to penicillin. Like I said, NEVER take mold lightly...thank God you found it.

Very sorry to hear that of your brother, Dayle. Thank you for sharing!

Mold, insect infestations, rodent infestations (and their nesting and feces) are definitely not good, but hidden behind a wall they're not an imminent danger, but still something you want to get taken care of. Also, when you're sistering in joists like you are, you want to nail rather than screw. Nails having a higher sheer strength than screws which is why you see houses framed with nails rather than screws. You'll probably be OK with what you did, but just an FYI for the future. Essentially, if you screw two boards together, screws will hold better if you're trying to pull the boards apart, nails will hold better if you're trying to slide the boards apart (sheer).

If y'all are handling anything where mold is involved, you need masks AND gloves!!!

You do not have to be immunocompromised to be effected by mold.
