Didn’t realize Roland passed. I watched this years ago and loved it.

Great stuff, I can't stop smiling listening to this. I'm a guitarist of 22+ years and picked up the mandolin about 8 weeks ago. This music makes me feel as inspired as I did way back when I picked up the guitar. Its a steep learning curve for sure.

Good job Roland - I've enjoyed your fine mandolin playing over the years. Great tune, great arrangements. I've always played it in either open A or regular tuning on fiddle and in A key. But I know some who play in other keys. Some of us lesser musicians stick to the A but you show us how to take an great old tune and play in another key. Good job! Bob Jones, Canada

beautiful playing, will go along nicely with the book I purchased from you two. That is a great book by the way. (Clarence White) Thank you Diane and Roland.

I believe Docs version and Clarence Whites version were in C. Those 2 are the gold standard. We might not even be talking about Black Mountain Rag if it wasn't for Doc.

Peter. Still playing mandolin?

But what if you know someone who plays it on guitar in C. If you want to play together it's hard to capo up to A in the C position. I learned it first on the Mando in A also, but I like to play it with friend. I think it's good to know songs in many different keys, so you can play it in any key.

I'm only 15, learning how to play the mandolin, so i do not have that much experience, but from my point of view i think it sounds perfect where it is.

Get your guitarist friend to do the transposing. In A, he'd be playing an A, D, and E progression. I don't know the song well enough to tell you the exact order, but if he fiddles around with those three chords, it should not be difficult to figure out. Hope this helps :)

Roland says further: "I also play it in D and F. When Clarence White and Doc Watson played it they capoed up two frets and played out C position, to play it in D. It was originally recorded in A by Tommy Jackson with his fiddle tuned in open A tuning. I actually tried to tune my mandolin to open A at first but I kept breaking strings."

...in response to Caleb Wilson:...the only natural and sensible way to 'flat-pick' it on guitar is, duh ! ...clamp up two frets, and play in G formation !!
@WildwoodvalleyBoy13 жыл бұрын
My ? is, why move it out of A? I have played for years and would not seriously consider moving it to any other key. Seems useless and unnecessary. I think all aspiring mandolinists should learn to play it in A.
@WildwoodvalleyBoy4 жыл бұрын
....WHY (C),...play it in (A) where it belongs,...without any special tuning,....-duh !
@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer Жыл бұрын
It's originally in AEAC#. This tuning was chosen because the treble strings are the major third of the key you play it in (A) playing in c allows the treble strings to be the major third (e) without tuning crossways
