You can just as easily have repetitive linear levels ... I don't see how Elden Ring being an open world made it better. I really am getting bored with decisions of where to go. I'd like the experience to be more focused than what we get. Having easy access to items lying on the ground in the open world (that you can ride up to and pick up without engaging in combat) is just crap. I feel the need to collect them, but it is also very busy work, not engaging gameplay. To me, interconnected worlds like Dark Souls are the best balance. Exploration is rewarded, but there are finite paths to take, each of which offers a challenge. There is also less busy work here than on a wide open map.

@@gediminasmorkys3589 what you described is called exploration, not combat. What you want is a conflict and reward. You are comparing to different distinct play styles. People like sense of agency and open world provides it, hence why game is hit. Also in elden ring there are tons of places that are linear. There are many important items that you can't just grab, you have to deal with certain boss and puzzle. The nature of open world game demands you to find those things, if you feel overwhelmed then only focus on one small area. If it's not your taste then it simply isn't, that doesn't make the game any bad or good.

The Devs has state before that Black Myth Wukong was inspired by God of War and Sekiro. This 2 game push them to create their own "mythical protagonist action game". So in a sense, Black Myth Wukong is a full on action game, not really a Soulslike (Sekiro indeed made by the same people who make Soulsgame, but Sekiro game is more of a pure action adventure game, only the difficulty of the game that resemble Soulslike).

That's cool if they aren't for you, but their reputation is worse than the reality. Have you tried any? They really aren't that hard after you learn what they are about and learn how to explore and come back later to tough bosses, upgrade your weapons and not just stubbornly fight stuff thats OP. Once you learn to just go elsewhere or run through areas its not so tough. Sure it's tough sometimes but usually knowledge makes it much easier and death leads to knowledge. With a bit of knowledge it's possible to go pretty far without dying that often or rarely and it's not a big deal.

What defines a soulslike to me is the consequence of Death in a game and your limited amount of healing or mana as you progress. If you only respawn at specific spots then its unlike many action RPGs where you just respawn right before a fight anywhere you may be in a game.

I liked the gameplay and layout for Nioh 2 and Sekiro. Tough as hell but was straight to the point. Had enough different level branches to keep interested. I like open world games but sometimes you need A-B then boss games

I've played Asterigos: Curse of the Stars in the easiest difficulty mode. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice also has branching skill trees while the Nioh duology and Wolong: Fallen Dynasty have a linear level design. But I get it how Black Myth: Wukong is a unique game in its own right.

I've tried to see why people are so hype about this game but for me personally I don't think it will be for me. Its obvious the game looks beautiful and the animations look great, but the combat looks like the weakest part to me. I'm mostly talking about the hit feedback of the staff attacks (the only weapon you will be using) barely effecting the bosses, with those very unsatisfying spark effects. Also given this game is a Action RPG with levels, skill trees, loot, gear, set bonuses...etc, I need to see how gameplay evolves throughout the game, combat, player builds and the like, before buying into that because too many modern games go for the "Action RPG" title, when most end up just being action adventure games with very light player choice on moves, skills, gear (like God of War, Ghost of Tushima, Spider-man,...etc). For me personally to consider a game an "Action RPG" there needs to be different playstyles, builds, gameplay systems that allows the players freedom to play and in their own way (which many of these "action RPGs" do not have). When I see this game I see a decent, linear, one and done spectacle action type experience (almost like the more recent FF16). The closets comparison I can think of with this game is Nioh 2, but instead of 11 fully kitted out weapon types, each with their own skill tree, and build to make around them, you have one weapon type. Maybe games like Nioh 2 ruined other Action RPGs for me because even though Nioh 2 was linear, mission based,...etc it had so many RPG systems and gameplay depth that you could spend hundreds of hours in the game and still find new techniques, new builds, playstyles,...etc Idk I will keep my eye on it, but I feel I do enjoy games that have set protagonists or at least games that focus on 1-2 weapon types and calls themselves "RPGs" knowing good and well that 99% of players will end up playing the game the same way. Maybe this will surprise me in terms of gameplay depth, RPG features, builds,..etc, but from the info so far I'm not personally sold on it.

tbh, I don't mind a striaght forward story. tbh I hate the style of narrative souls game have, I don't like to read and explore the tiny details to piece together and then assume what story could be. Sounds like the devs are so caught up on trying to be different that they may choose objectively worse game mechanics and features over mimicking the game studio that nurtured the genre and continues to excel in it. Who cares if it’s considered a soul-likes. It looks like one, and it will absolutely be compared to fromsoft games no matter how hard they try. Well these days , every hack and slash game always have to be either “souls like” or “souls lite” cuz apparently that’s the cool thing now and I personally hate it . Coming from someone who grew up on God of War , Ninja Gaiden , DMC , Darksiders , etc , I hate that nowadays developers think gamers want souls like/lite games when most of them don’t .
