Black Myth: Wukong New Unreal Engine 5 Gameplay Trailer Breakdown

One year after Game Science dropped their first gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Wukong, we finally get a new trailer featuring the new Unreal Engine 5.
In this 12 minutes long trailer, we get a glimpse of the Minor Western Heavens, the Yellow Brow Demon, and an epic battle against one of the Twenty Eight Mansions along with a ton of easter eggs from novel. The combat looks top notch and the art direction is showing great promise as they take inspiration from real world scenes such as the Dazu Rock Carvings as well ornate fantasy takes on artifacts such as the Golden Cymbal.

a minor correction: when you were translating what Tudi(土地) said about our character's fortune, you translated “有才无命” as 'you got the talent but if you do this you will die'. But "命" here actually refers to luck or destiny instead of life. The correction translation would be 'You have the talents required but you are always out of luck or you are destined for never getting it'. Great analysis all around

As a Chinese I must tell you that China is so different. For instance, long time ago , due to the end of Quaternary glacial period， flood is everywhere, you can see many mythology about it. But for the western people, they tend to save themselves with the Ark. But Chinese face the flood and sacirfice many many heros to by pass the flood saving massive lives. That is why there is no heroism in China, instead, All for one and one for all. You can also see the same thing during the covid pandemic, Chinese prefer to sacrifice their limited freedom to elimiate the virus to 0 getting more free life.

I gasped when I saw the Dazu Guanyin statue cos I actually recognized it. Personally, if they do make Guanyin a character in the game, I wish they show more of her rarer/cooler esoteric forms, like the thousand-armed one, the eleven-headed one, the horse-headed one... and so on. Would make for some very interesting character designs.

I like how the developers show the Huangmei Dawang as the main enemy in the trailer here. Very neat, as it keep the dark/ demonic looks while impersonating Mile Buddha. I wonder if he would use those divine treasures to fight us later in the game.

The fourth icon of the skills seems to be a passive skill. Every time you got a point at the bottom right corner, the fourth icon would enter a very short cooldown. So, it probably a skill that can grant you a point when you do certain things, and you can spend those points on certain moves to get addition benefits (like refill your health bar more efficient, and make the stick-extending more powerful).

Minor Correction: that stamina bar that you thought was just for the staff, is actually a stamina bar for you, the player. I noticed the bar going down as the player was running through the snow to get to the minor boss fight, as well as when the player dodges. So, with that being said, I believe that this is a stamina bar for the player rather than just the staff.

you can also try 聊斋志异(liao zhai zhi yi), I don't know if there's an english version or not, but I really liked the novel ever since I was a kid. It's a novel about ghosts and fox spirits, most of the stories were love related but it always showed a strong sense of sarcasm to the real world. Another I highly recommand is 山海经（Classic of Mountains and Seas), this book is like an encyclopedia of Chinese ancient mythical mosters and heros before Circa 200 BC, when buddaism and Taoism is not introduced to the mainstream yet. It also influenced Journey to the West and Black Myth a lot.

I think culturally, for a lot of normal people, buddhist deities, taoist deities, and "deified people" like Confucius all kind of melt together into superstition. Like if you see people praying to them, you feel that they are all the same so a lot of folklore have them all mixed together much like the case with Journey to the West. And Dazu is pretty unique in that it is much more of everyday folk focused rock carving site so a lot of the sculptures are more "cartoony" and more down to earth with scenes that you don't usually expect from more orthodox locations that were built with official support.

I can't help but feel as though the lines from 5:06 - 8:10 are a take on the plethora of bad Journey to the West themed dramas/films coming out of the Sinosphere recently, as well as the controversy regarding Liu Xiao Ling Tong*, calling out both the studios that create these films as simply playing the nostalgia card to generate revenue for their subpar products, as well as noting that Liu's status as the definitive portrayer of Sun Wukong is ultimately an impediment to JTTW attaining the kind of universal appeal as the Greek and Viking myths as it constrains the kinds of stories that you can tell with the JTTW characters and setting. *The actor who played Sun Wukong in the classic 1984 CCTV adaptation of Journey to the West; as Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime, to many, Liu is Sun Wukong.

If compared with "Lord of the Rings", the story of "Lord of the Rings" can be summarized in one sentence: a saint summoned a group of various people to protect one person to a destination to destroy something; the story of "Journey to the West" To sum it up in one sentence: a sage summoned a group of all kinds of people to protect a person to a destination to get something. I think from what we know, they want to revisit the story after the original journey have taken place. They want to highlight some of hypocrisy of the good and evil from the original by seeing many of the demons again. Like if you think about it, most of the demons were pets, disciples, or related to the Buddhas or deities. I think they want to tell a more interesting story than just demons bad, Wukong's group is good after all Wukong was a demon too.

I think they could take that in different directions with regards to Buddhism, though: The game could end up saying something like "if you take a closer look at the villains of Journey to the West, you can see that the Buddha, Guanyin, etc are hypocrites and enlightenment is not something you should strife for". Or the game could say something like "enlightenment is the thing you should strife for, but the villains of the story are more complicated and you shouldn't fall to good-vs-evil-thinking". Or maybe they could avoid taking a stance on Buddhism itself. From what they have shown so far it is likely not possible to tell where they take this theme, so I suppose we will have to wait until the game comes out.

@@SeriousTrivia My impression of Journey to the West is that it is so full of Buddhist themes that it would be hard to avoid taking a stance on the religion. From what I know about assassin's creed (haven't played it) they tried to do that giving Templars and Assassins belief systems far removed from what the real Templar Order and the real Assassins/Nazri Isma'ili state believed. I didn't get that impression for Black Myth Wukong so far, both trailers were playing with Buddhist language/ideas a lot. No matter what it ends up being, I am very interested in how the game will handle its themes. They want to show a more complex take on the story and its villains and I enjoy both complex religious works and complex critiques of religion. And if they instead present a complex take on the story without taking a stance on Buddhism, it will be interesting to see how they manage that. Btw, do you have an guess which stories the other two games will be about?

How long does it take to learn Chinese?

depends how much use you get out of it. If you are in an environment where it is used a lot you will pick it up much faster. If you are just sitting at home trying to learn it from a book, it will probably never happen

it is probably a good foundation since most of the japanese characters are the same in Chinese but you would probably have to learn a lot more characters. But given your japanese background, you will have an easier time than most.

If you want to get to the level to understand this trailer, it'll be at least 6-7 years I think. This is not a CoD level trailer. It requires a solid understanding of ancient Chinese culture and ancient Chinese language. I've seen some foreigners fluent in modern Chinese completely fail in literal (ancient) Chinese because it's that different. If you want to learn enough to communicate, I'd say a year or two is enough. The language is easy to start but hard to master.

I heard that Chinese people connect sexual contents to the color "yellow" since some U.S. newspapers were printed on yellow papers. By then Chinese people were extremely conservative and I guess those newspapers contained sexual contect? It's definitely not tradition.

close! it's definitely not traditional (just an interesting connection I noted). So I think the association largely comes from Oscar Wilde's imprisonment for his sexual orientation as when he was captured, it was said he had a yellow book with him (a common cover color for a lot of book at the time) and it was a romantic novel that was also considered lewd and add on the general public perception towards LGBT back in those days, lewdness and yellow became associated. As for how the Chinese picked it up or when, I actually have no idea (but it is definitely a recent development).
