I remember watching this movie like it was yesterday. My sister, my baby brother and I saw the movie in the theater the first Tuesday after it came out. I remember seeing Black families in full African clothing, being proud to see Black moviegoers come out in droves to see this movie. To me, it's still one of the top-tier MCU films ever made. The world of Wakanda was (and still is) beautiful to look at. The supporting characters (i.e. Okoye, Shuri, Queen Ramonda & M'Baku) are just as phenomenal as the main leads. But, to me, the performances of the late Chadwick Boseman as T'Challa/Black Panther and the dynamic Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger were so captivating to watch, especially Killmonger. The story surrounding them were as deep and rich as any other drama. Hell, the cameo of Killmonger in the next movie was so good, because of how Jordan played that role. I seriously hope he returns (via the Ancestral Plane) for the 3rd movie. Looking back now, the 3rd act and final battle wasn't as good as what came before, but I think the core story was so good that I didn't really mind the 3rd act. With the follow-up known as "Wakanda Forever", it's ironic that the 3rd act in that film is a little better. It's really sad that we lost Chadwick, but I'm grateful for what he gave us as T'Challa in the short time we had him in the MCU. God rest his soul. #RIPChadwickBoseman

@@jbearclowater agreed. These stories mean so much to people, especially kids. And there are so many kids out there suffering. It takes as little as a visit to brighten someone's day and knowing he did everything he could to brighten the days of as many sick kids as he could while literally dying makes me wish that more actors did it.

I love this idea Dan. Revisiting films is so important because opinions can change, moods can change, times change. It would be so hard to be a critic because you guys are set at a higher standard because your thoughts and opinions have to be set in stone and unwavering, and sometimes that's not the case. Sometimes I know for me if I'm in a funk or not in the right mindset that doesn't give a film a fair chance and it warrants maybe a second viewing.

Thanks for an insightful look back, Dan. Black Panther is one of a handful of films that I've willingly bought tickets to see multiple times in the cinema. If you're going to re-visit other reviews from your SJ days, perhaps you might consider inviting some of the folks who did the reviews with you back then to ask about what they think about the films now.

To the inevitable complaints about the 3rd Act VFX issues, bear in mind that Ragnarok, BP, Ant-Man & The Wasp and Infinity War were all in production at the same time, and BP simply ended up getting short-changed in terms of the amount of time its VFX teams got to work on the movie relative to those other 3 movies! We've since found out about the immense pressure VFX Artists are under especially by Marvel Studios and BP was one of its early victims in that regard!
@CMontgomeryBurns09
@CMontgomeryBurns09 Жыл бұрын
That's still on the studio for not keeping those FX up to stuff, not putting their money where their mouth was. All we can judge is the final project on display, not make excuses for whatever occurred behind the scenes. More to the point, my primary complaint with BP's conclusion is not its lackluster FX (most of its FX were quite mediocre, in fact), but rather how it forsook the melodramatic politicking of the previous two acts; it descended into generic MCU "everybody fights(!)"-mode when it could've transcended that.
@AllInTheGame01
@AllInTheGame01 Жыл бұрын
@@CMontgomeryBurns09 I mean I literally named Marvel Studios as the reason for that issue! There's a BTS clip online of Producer Nate Moore talking about how Coogler was ready to scrap that final act and immediately start prepping a smaller, more intimate, practical & visceral replacement when made aware that the VFX was unlikely to be ready, but he ended up being overruled by the head honchos who unfortunately wanted big spectacle instead!

Dan, I have a mild disagreement with one topic. Who "should" become the Black Panther is irrelevant to the discussion in Wakanda Forever. There is is no discussion because there is NO herb to take. Shuri is the only one who can re-create the herb, Shuri has the Talokan bracelet, she is the one who lost her mother and she is the one out for revenge. She said very clearly that she wasnt interested in recreating the "mantel" of the Black Panther. I get why people want a different Black Panther. If I'm being honest, I did too. However, the idea that the movie should have had some sort of discussion about it, in not consistent with the story that was being told. Now that there is herb growing in Wakanda again, that may be a subject for future stories, but in Wakanda Forever, that didn't make sense. Overall though, I love the idea of looking back and seeing how things have settled with you and what perspective you can have on it now.

I'm of a similar view of this as I am with the first "Avatar" film in that it has relied more on it's hype than anything. It is most certainly a nice film with some solid performances, but it's still an MCU film for me at the end of the day, and thus, hard to really enjoy the events in a film that can go back and forth between meaning anything or being changed on a dime. And now the context of how much they were putting on themselves is a reminder that the VFX issue existed way before, it just particularly came to a head with Love and Thunder.

I’d love to see more of these. I think Black Panther is the prime example of you don’t always have to do something new if you do it really well. BP follows the hero’s journey and the basic superhero template very closely but it does it so well that it feels fresh and interesting. I think that is part of why the stumbles as much as it does.

Any thoughts on how accurate the portrayal of African culture was in Black Panther? As a Kenyan, I found many generalisations that were quite frankly, insulting. It colored my view of the movie and made it hard to appreciate. Nonetheless, I do agree that Killmonger was one of the most impressive movie villains I have ever seen and it is a pity he was killed off. And of course, we all miss Boseman. May he rest 🙏 in peace.

Love this new series. I hope it will include a mix of serialized and stand alone movies. I think the serialized movies will always be impacted by the movies that came after your review--and that's interesting. But it would also be interesting to see how reviews and opinions change on movies that had no new story input to shape your opinion--meaning they will be reexamined based solely on how the world and the reviewer have changed since the movie came out. Not sure if that makes sense outside my head, but the bottom line is I'm looking forward to the series and I'm here for any movie you go back and review 5 (or more) years later. All the best, tg

I really enjoyed this movie. I watched it in theaters with one of my good friends. The theater experience was incredible. It was a moment in cinema history and it definitely lived up to that moment. However, there are things that I thought could have been better. The contrast between Tchalla and Killmonger for instance. The problem that Killmongers character identifies in the movie was valid, but the way that he went about trying to solve it and his demeanor paled in comparison to Tchalla's portrayal. In my personal opinion, Killmonger felt like an angry child/teen trying to lash out and burn the world down for the injustices in his life. It felt like I was watching an angry child trying to argue with a grown adult (Tchalla). It just didn't seem like a fight between equals, which I thought was unfair to Killmongers character. I felt like Killmonger needed more of his father's gravitas?, maturity? Just my personal opinion. Overall a great movie. What do you guys think?
@JC222
@JC222 Жыл бұрын
The contrast is supposed to make you feel like that. Its intentional, so its done perfectly. Killmonger is a manifestation of the built up, often suppressed ragewhen it comes to the injustice we face.

I feel like most MCU films, black panther included, work 5x better in theaters with a crowd. The quips, inside jokes/references, Ludwig's music, and triumphant moments are naturally elevated by the pop-culture theatrical experience. I rewatched BP after Chadwick passed at home on my HDTV, and while the quiet moments involving ancestors/family are still poignant, the rest of the film's moments just don't feel remotely the same. Of course that's also due to the difference in 1st-time vs 2nd-time viewing.

This is an interesting idea. It’s especially interesting to see this treatment for certain films that got a lot of attention due to some factors that don’t directly relate to the quality of the film itself (like new technologies used in the making of the film etc.) or raised a lot of emotion at the time of release. Biggest examples I can think would be Black Panther but also films like Avatar, Captain Marvel, 2016 Ghostbusters and Star Wars sequels. Personally, I watched Black Panther for the first time a year or two after it came out and while I liked the film quite a bit, I felt and still feel like it was a bit overhyped for various reasons at the time. It certainly wasn’t worthy of a Best Picture Oscar nomination like some people absurdly claimed at the time. Only comic book/superhero movies that might be worthy of such consideration are The Dark Knight, Joker and Logan. And even with those I’m not sure if I’d go that far.

Oh how I wish Boseman was still with us. We would’ve gotten a Black Panther sequel in which T’Challa has to deal with the negative consequences (some he never could’ve foreseen) of revealing Wakanda to the world. All whilst becoming king again (after 5 years of being snapped), an international political figure, (maybe) a father. And has to deal with Namor whom they had no idea existed and was affected by their revelation to the world. Possibly making him and Nakia doubt if he did the right thing in revealing themselves or not. It would’ve made such a fascinating story and character study of T’Challa and the Black Panther.

The biggest issue with the first film is that for as good as Chadwick was...the script basically turned him into someone who has to be told what his worldview is every major plot point. And that problem was transferred onto Letitia in the second. It really squandered a lot of potential for both as they felt less like characters and more like vehicles other characters use to drive the plot from scene to scene. It's a high B-tier kind of film for me, one I can put on and enjoy at any time but not one I'd ever call one of the greats. The hype for this film was understandable but it got put on FAR too high of a pedestal from the moment it was announced, which continued all the way through the release of the sequel, which hasn't been a very healthy trend. Its Oscar nominations were a mix of deserved and undeserved, and given Infinity War was also right there with basically no recognition...it was a weird time. And in that regard, even as emotions cooled, I find myself feeling the same way now as I did then.

It would have to be constrained to a movie I reviewed on air, and those don’t really start until 2016. So I can’t really go back too far.

Really cool idea. Reviewing things in near hindsight is actually a treasure trove that hasn't really been explored in real-time... usually only after the fact of a TV or movie series has ended and as part of some anniversary retrospective also #STLCardinals

Rather, re-reviewing by aggregate... that's basically the structure here... its a nifty idea, and I like how it allows the reviewer to evolve and/or double down...

She's not really in the space anymore and is doing her own thing. But it will be fun to revisit that review, I remember it being a very conflicted one from both of us.

I’d love to hear your re-thoughts on Interstellar, although you’ve probably rechecked that a few times already.

I think the reason shuri was the guinea pig to take the synthetic herb was that a) it may not have worked, b) shuri wasn't going to discuss this with anyone since she wanted to be black panther to get revenge. The thing is that if there has been a larger discussion on who takes the synthetic herb, the council and specially mbaku and nakia would have voted against shuri taking the herb. As good as that discussion scene would have been, shuri would not have become black panther after that

Can't agree at all your dismissal of Richard E. Grant. Great performance, superior to Jordan.

I think one of the best parts of Wakanda Forever for me was having them close their borders back up against the world. As a black person, viewing the first film I was able to empathize with many aspects of where Killmonger was coming from, it almost felt like the ending of the first film wanted to whitewash his message. They set it up under the guise of T'Challa learning from Killmonger, but in actuality Killmonger's message had nothing to do with simply borders. It was arming and protecting black people all over the world. So I feel like on some level Coogler knew that which is why he retconned that part of the story and added the more believable part where other countries would manipulate, steal, and kill for Wakanda's resources.
